Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1841/51 Census look up Kent Elham Craxford

Many thanks for the CROXFORD tip - sorry I didn't get back again at the weekend. I have a subscription to 1837online  and had looked at the Kent 1861 census. I hadn't got round to looking at that spelling though. (Should know better - my own grandfather's birth is registered in the BMD indexes as CROXFORD)

Anyway that is my family so I have managed to expand the South East corner of England association a lot. All I have to do now is find out where John Craxford came from in the first place (Maybe I need the full 1851 census for that).

In the meantime we have finished a more or less complete transcription of John Craxford's will which I shall offer to the site you mentioned.

Many thanks again for all your help

Alan Craxford

Many thanks again -- that does confirm some partial data we had for an EF Craxford. The address is 62 South Stour (presumably there is a river Stour in that vicinity). I have a date of death now for Edwin registered in Tonbridge, Kent in 1893 (2a 468)

We shall keep looking for further details of John. Is a reference to his will useful in this site or on the local Folkestone site you mentioned?

Many thanks again

Many thanks for the web site reference. I have had a look through the 1841 census, listed BMDs and the trader directory but there is no reference to a Craxford or family in any of them. There is only a small sample of the 1851 census and maybe I would have more luck there.

I have applied for a copy of John Craxford's death certificate (Deaths for quarter June 1857 registered at Elham 2a 395)

I also have a copy of his will - proved on August 12th 1857 which includes the references to "gentleman of Folkestone" and his property "Belle Vue Cottage, Folkestone"

John is an isolated "fragment" from the family tree

Many thanks for your help

I am looking for details of John Craxford "Gentleman of Folkestone" death registered in Elham 1857 and his wife (?Harriott) and children (Edwin Frederick, Emma Ann, Harriett Ann, Jane and John). I think he was a sawmill owner and sometime resident at Belle Vue Cottage, Folkestone. The family tree traces back to Northamptonshire in the early 1600s but I have been until to place John on it. I can find no trace of his offspring after his death.

Many thanks
