The Common Room / Re: Researching the history of your home
« on: Sunday 28 January 07 15:21 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks everyone for your ideas of what to try - I really appreciate them all and hopefully it will give me lots of avenues for research. The neighbour next door has been quite useful with information but I can only go back to the name of the owner who had the house prior to the propety developer who we bought it from with her help so I still have a long way to go  ;D

Hi Casalguidi and Suttontrust

Thank you for the ideas of resources. I shall try and gain access to all your suggestions and see what I can find out.

When we bought the house, the estate agents claimed it had been built in the early 1800's.

Many thanks,
Sahara

The Common Room / Researching the history of your home
« on: Saturday 27 January 07 11:55 GMT (UK)  »
I am just starting to look at researching the history of my home. I have searched through the available census records but can only get information of all the people who lived on that street as there is no way of telling who was living in this actual house from the information given. I have found one great photo of the house in a photographic history book on the village and would love to get a copy of it.

My question is what resources should I be investigating in order to find out more on who lived here and any other information about the house? I am after anything and everything I can find!

The Common Room / Obtaining recent death certificate
« on: Tuesday 18 April 06 18:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Apologies if I am repeating what may be a frequent topic, but I would like to obtain a recent death certificate (within the last few months) and I am not sure how to go about it.

I have looked on the GRO website and it says that I can only purchase certificates more than 18 months old from there and that I should contact the local register office where the death took place. The problem is that I do not know where this death would have been registered.

I am unsure of how to proceed so if anyone has any advice on how I can find out the local register office or anything else that may help me I would really appreciate it.

Thank you in advance for all help received.

Hi Tuppie,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I have only just seen this message. Thank you so much for the information you have given me. I didn't make it to go and look last week in the end so I will print this out and take it with me so I can definitely find it when I try again in a couple of weeks.

Thank you again so much for this information, and sorry again for the delay in replying.

Thanks Pauline and woodydog.

Pauline I had a look at the census streets and unfortunately it wasn't wonderfully helpful but at least gave me a vague idea of where to look (I was planning to navigate using pubs!), however....

Thanks woodydog, I had missed that page on the website and that gives me a pretty good idea of the place. Armed with that information I think I may be able to find the place now.

Thanks again to both of you, I really appreciate the help.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Location of The Pingle, Mosborough
« on: Sunday 19 February 06 22:32 GMT (UK)  »
I am off on a family tree hunt this week and I have found one of my ancestors living in The Pingle, Mosborough in the 1881 census. I want to try and find this place but have so far found very little reference to it, the only useful one so far being a picture of The Pingle - West Mosborough on the Mosborough website.

I cannot seem to find the actual location of this road an am desperate to find it as this week I want to go and look around Mosborough for this place as I am living nearby at the moment but moving away from the area soon. Sites such as multimap do not know of the road.

If anyone can guide me as to how to find it (names of surrounding streets recognised by multimap would be a useful start) so that I can find it's location I would be very grateful.

Many thanks in advance, Sahara

Ooh congratulations to you both! I hope you enjoyed the honeymoon. I went to Estonia this summer and it was beautiful - how were Latvia and Lithuania as they are on my list now too?  :) Oh, and any tips on planning a wedding Sarah? (I'm working on one myself, although bit of a wait at the moment... looking forward to all that new family tree research to make a start on tho! :)) Sahara
