How fascinating! Many thanks.

Until recently, I had never heard of the name Hurlbote (sometimes translated especially in later years as Hurlbutt). I will look at that land on the Wilmslow Rd to see if I can find the original Hurlbote and maybe (!) find a connection to my clan in Mere.

Ashton upon Mersey to Ryecroft is 10 miles

Possibly! The Hurlbotes (and various versions of the name) can be found in the general area then. Stretching from Knutsford in the south into what is now the suburbs of Manchester! There appear to be two focal points in the 17th century - one around Ashton and the other around Tatton Park. Haven't yet found the link! Is it a name that's also on your radar?

Best wishes

Neil

Much appreciate Lizzie

I can see a "Ryecroft Farm" which isn't a million miles (4 to be precise) from the known location of Sibbil's nephew (my great*8 grandfather) so I think you are right with your take on the location/writing.

Thanks again

Cheshire / Bowdon Parish Location
« on: Sunday 16 April 23 13:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Hoping someone can help me with the location and modern name (and possibly handwriting) of a place mentioned in a burial record.

Its the second line in the image attached:
John basd son of Sibbil Hurlbote of ??????? was buried on same day [i.e. 22nd January 1658]

I think the text says "Tycroft", comparing the letters with other known words in the passage.
Has anyone heard of that location or care to correct my interpretation?

Many thanks

Neil

Limerick / Re: Anyone researching the Caplis family
« on: Tuesday 08 November 22 21:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Mick my Grandmother was Annie Gleeson from Newport born 1896 her younger sister Mary married John Caplis from Lackamore not far from Murroe and her daughter Kitty Caplis my mothers cousin is still living there.
Regards
James

Hi James - have you done DNA testing at all? My profile is both on Ancestry and MyHeritage.
Asking as I'm a Caples (Caplice/Capless) descendent. My great grandfather * 3 leaving Newport, Tipperary at what I believe to have been a relatively early age.
Gleeson is a name that crops up as a connection DNA wise and as I try and build a wider picture of the Caples clan in the 19th century Lackamore, Toreen Brien, and Coonmoore (all close to Newport) all appear to feature heavily. My working hypothesis is that some of the farmers in these locations were either brothers or cousins but I'm yet to find a smoking gun.

Other names that appear to feature quite heavily also include Nihil and Hayes and of course Ryan. I think every other family was a Ryan ;)

Caernarvonshire / Help with Brickwall in Caernarvonshire/Penisarwaun
« on: Saturday 29 October 22 17:40 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Looking for help in breaking through a Caernarvonshire heritage brick wall....

My great * 2 grandfather, Robert Williams, was born in 1853 in the county and the 1921 census have him indicate Penisa'r Waun as his place of birth. Thus far it was just the county listed - so a real breakthrough.
But what next!? Looking for tips on next steps for those of you used to looking at the records of the area.

So far I've converted his 1921 listed age into the potential BMD records in 2 quarters of 1853. Tried to look at baptism records on Ancestry and FindMyPast to rule in/out. But to no avail.
Is the only solution to buy the birth certs of each of the 6 prime suspects, recorded as a Caernarfon registration, from the GRO?

All help, direction and comments welcome!

Armed Forces / RAF Operational Sorties - Does name order infer role on plane?
« on: Tuesday 19 July 22 21:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm looking at the WW2 records of a relative who was lost, feared drowned, in combat off the Bay of Biscay. His rank was a Sergeant and he was a wireless operator/gunner.

He was part of a crew that manned a Halifax in 1943. The official listing of those perished starts with two Pilots, a navigator, three wireless operator/gunners and an engineer. Can I infer anything from the order of the names given?

For example the first pilot name given would have been the captain of this designated flight?
Would the first wireless operator/gunner listed actually have been the wireless operator rather than the Gunner on this occasion?

It matters as one of the crew actually survived. He was picked up a German U-boat and he on release from a PoW documented what happened to the crew members (by role).

many thanks

Neil

Shropshire / Shropshire: Lichfield - Wills and Administrations, 1516-1652
« on: Sunday 03 July 22 19:32 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I can see the indexes for the Lichfield Wills on Find My Past, IGI, and Ancestry (amongst others). Copies of the actual wills, and marriage bonds appear to be on Find My Past as well for the period beyond 1650.
But does anyone know where I can find copies of wills etc pre 1650? Assuming they exist?
Either website or archives.

Many thanks

Neil

The Common Room / Early 20th Century Railway Driver Records
« on: Sunday 03 April 22 15:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I'm looking for an ancestor who was an Train Driver from around at least 1891 (census record) to 1907 (when he left the trade union for Railway workers). I have his company and locations but his name doesn't appear on the indexed pages on ancestry from the TNA records. I know this could be a transcription error or indeed missing records issue, but in turning the pages of what records are on there I haven't been able to find any loco drivers!

Anyone had similar experiences or know if train drivers had a special record book away from porters and fireman?

Many thanks

Neil
