Shropshire Completed Look up Requests / Re: Mary Ann Manuell (New)

Hi

Yeah, fairly sure of those marriages and dates (so yes you are correct), I even have a copy of the entry in the parish register for George and Mary Ann from the Shropshire Archives in Shrewsbury, but they weren't able to confirm his birth date for either 1792 or 1796, I'm fairly sure I have the correct George it's just a question of getting the dates to be more constant.

Re Georges' death in 1876, this is another anomaly, I have also seen this will entry, but William allegedly died in 1874 ???... of course I may have the wrong William.

I have been a year or more trying to get to grips with the George/William details, especially as William was indentured (apprentice draper) prior to 1841 so I could never find a link between them until then. I also had a similar problem with his son, my g grandfather Alfred, who turned out to be Alfred Boycott Goodwin, then it fell into place.

No, this doesn't help with Mary, though I was hoping by looking at one of his wives in more depth, a hint of something may appear, seemed sensible to start with his first wife...

Regards
Geoff

Hello again

Many thanks for replying.

Geo was born either 1792 or 1796
I cannot find a record of Mary Ann after the marriage, I assumed she died, the marriage to Frances Cross is also confirmed in the 1941 census folio 12/58, Hannah and John were present, William was an apprentice in Wellington.
Hannah and William were baptised in the parish of Madeley, Salop in 1825, page 230, no's 1835 and 1836.
None of the children were to Frances Cross.

I couldn't find Frances C's DOB!

Hope this helps.

Hi

Yeah, info is very thin on the ground  :'( in Shropshire as a whole for Manuell...

I've checked nationally and there are Manuells' from Scotland to Cornwall, Cornwall is probably the best bet, but it does get messy.

The closest line I have is Mary Ann b 1803 Gwennap, parents possibly John Manuell and Margaret Sprague, there are other possiblities, but this is the only couple I could find with a mother called Margaret, i.e. there was a Margaret Manuell as a witness at the marriage, there was another witness Griffiths, but I can't make out the forename.

Hi

Many thanks for the reply.

I did eventually manage to get a copy of the marriage from the Parish Register, like you, I too thought the name was ripe for possible variants. Whilst her name is not too clear it does look like Manuell, furthermore one of the witnesses was a Margaret Manuell and is quite clear.

Shropshire Completed Look up Requests / Mary Ann Manuell (New)
« on: Thursday 16 June 11 04:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Mary Ann Manuell married George Goodwin 1822 in Dawley Magna, Shropshire.

I've hit a brick wall with George b 1792, though his parents maybe William Goodwin and Ann Humphries.

If anyone has any pointers for Mary Ann Manuell, i.e born/chris', death etc - and/or indeed Georges parentage, it would be a great help.

I cannot find any details for Mary Ann before or after her marriage in 1822, she had 3 children to George, Hannah, William and John all born before 1830.

Many thanks.

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1861 lookup

Hi

By 1861 he would be about 18 years old, he may have left his maternal home and be employed as an apprentice, it may be worth looking at apprentice records and records in the surrounding districts where railway work was carried on.

If he was an apprentice, he may have worked outside of Shropshire!

I notice that there are some some Henry Oswell's for some censuses, even in 1861, one especially, place of residence is Broseley which looks to be a few miles away, but this is just an example.

The one citation for Henry's birth or christening I have found using your info, shows his parents as George and Emma. It was difficult tracking down this marriage, however, I have found a marriage in 1842, Zoerge Orwell to Emma Amson in 1842 at Market Drayton, aka Drayton-in-Hales, vol 18, page 131 and presume this is correct.

Hope some of this sparse info may give a pointer or two.

Hi Claire

All of your info stacks up thanks.

This appears to be a fragmented family as follows:

I am confident I have found the right William Goodwin but I have never really linked him to the right father or mother, I know he is a George Goodwin and that Hannah and a John are his sons by a Mary or Mary Anne. William's birth details are also vague, there is plenty of info to be sure he was born in Ironbridge, Shropshire abt 1824, there is an entry in the 1841 census for a William Goodwin in Wellington, Salop as a draper's apprentice, which appears to be correct, because his marriage certificate states 'Draper'. Not knowing exactly who his mother is makes the linking difficult, there are 2 or 3 possible George Goodwins and a similar number of Mary or Mary Anne's that would qualify, but contradictions appear in them all, as well possibilities. I just wonder, when you were looking at Hannah's record that her mother Mary Anne had a surname mentioned, I can only find a Mary Anne Manuel/l, although that is secondary to William's parentage being confirmed.

Cheers
Geoff

Hi Claire

Wow!

Thanks for that, I'll digest it and see how it all fits in ...

The time I've spent on George Goodwin, his possible wives and offspring, especially William is unbelievable, well probably not to another researcher. I believe there is also another sibling, John, I believe he was also on the 1841 and 1851 census' though I have never been able to secure info about their mother. I believe George remarried in 1931 to a Frances Cross and again following Frances' death in 1848, to a Mary Harrington. I've yet to find out what happened to Mary Anne, whom I believe to be Manuel/l.

That was a hiccup about John Fox, I don't remember seeing his name, only those 3 that I mentioned.

The info about George and Hannah's baptism record is excellent...

Once again, many thanks for your help, if I can ever help you, please let me know.

Geoff
