Midlothian / Albert Edward Ferguson
« on: Monday 17 October 11 19:56 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my great grandfather Albert Edward Ferguson who certainly lived in Edinburgh between 1906 when he joined the masons and 1932.  During the war he lived with his daughter in law in Edinburgh and was definitely a Scot. This is what I have:

He was married to Helen Jenner in St Giles Edinburgh in 1903
According to the marriage certificate his parents were Neil and Rose Ferguson.
His son, my grandfather Neil George, was born in Pitlochry/Moulin in 1903.
The 1911 Census gives his place of birth as England.
He was 28 in 1911 so born about 1883.
The only Albert E in Scotland in 1901 is in Leith South, a 16 year old soldier born in England.  Possible they got the age wrong?

The trouble is that I can't find any record of him apart from his masonic record, marriage and the 1911 Census, no birth or death.  I am wondering if his father was army which would account for the birth in England.

Can anyone help?

Scotland / Mains?
« on: Thursday 13 October 11 09:44 BST (UK)  »
On old maps of Morayshire I keep coming across the "name" Mains next to a building - settlement.  At first I thought it was a name but it seems too frequent, so I wondered if it meant "manse" but it doesn't appear next to a church.  Any ideas, anyone?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help reading baptismal record please
« on: Monday 10 October 11 11:10 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone decipher the place name on this 1719 baptismal record in the parish of Edinkillie?  My reading so far is "April 7th James Miller in ..... had his lawful son baptised William Miller witnesses ... Grant in .... and Donald ... in ..."  I want to know where James Miller lived but maybe deciphering the other place names might help me narrow it down.  Many thanks,

Jenny

Could some kind soul with access to Alison Mitchell's "Pre-1855 gravestone inscriptions on Speyside" tell me what it says on William Miller and Elizabeth Cumming's stone at Knockando.  According to Moray Libindx, the reference is Kn26, p.72 - L 929.5

Many thanks,

Occupation Interests / Scotland - law clerks
« on: Sunday 18 September 11 14:47 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me where I may find details on what an apprentice law clerk in Scotland in the second half of the 19thC did to become qualified, i.e. did they go to a university or train on the job and for how long and what that entailed, etc.  Also, what sort of education or background would they need to become an apprectice law clerk?

Moray (Elginshire) / Found shot through the head
« on: Thursday 15 September 11 19:12 BST (UK)  »
I have the death certificate of Isabella Grant nee Masson 1860 - 1908 and it says "supposed suicide - not certified".  There is no link to the RCE but I have asked SP to put one up to see if there is any more information on that.  Meanwhile, looking on Moray Libindx I have come across her death entry and it says "date of death 17th August 1908 - found shot through the head".  Needless to say, I am agog to find out what happened but have drawn a blank.  Can anyone help?

Midlothian / Alice Grant - Robert Cranston Low
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 15:31 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone researching Alice Grant b. 1886 married to Robert Cranston-Low, mother to Norman?  I am interested in contacting anyone descended from her.  She is my Great Aunt Alice whom I met occasionally when I was a child and I would love a copy of a photograph of her or her father William Grant if any exist.

Other Countries / Grant - Belize
« on: Friday 09 September 11 23:48 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather, Herbert Thomson Grant, lived in Belize from the 1920s until the 1970s.  I would be interested in any information that anyone may have on him.  Also, I would like to find his British Honduran marriage record to Silveria Perez Zetina and the birth records of my mother and her sisters but don't know where to look.  Any help appreciated.

Canada / Naturalisation
« on: Tuesday 06 September 11 20:48 BST (UK)  »
How do I find the initial entry and then naturalisation records of someone who became Canadian?  He arrived in Canada from Scotland in either 1889 or 1890.  I don't know whether direct or through the USA but he was definitely on the 1891 census in Toronto.  I know he became Canadian as I found him on a ship returning to Scotland in 1925 and he gives Canadian as his nationality, but I am struggling with Canadian archives.  Any idea where I would find these records?
