Wexford / Which Website is Best for Civil Registration Marriage Index Searches?
« on: Friday 13 September 13 18:53 BST (UK)  »
As most of you probably know, there are multiple online sites which provide access to the civil registration marriage indices (such as LDS/mormon family history site, Ancestry, Findmypast and perhaps others).  In the past I used a site which had a great feature: In addition to showing the relevant volume and page number for each marriage entry, it also gave a link to a list of the other names listed for the same page. The other names are critical for trying to narrow down/limit the candidate results, if  you know something of the spouse's name, while the page and volume numbers are useful in ordering up certs from the GRO.
However, I can't seem to find this very useful feature anymore - I can't figure out if a site has changed, or if I am not using the right site anymore. Findmypast comes close, in that it gives a list of people on the same page, but it does not actually seem to list the page and volume number, at least not that I can see.  Anyone able to point me to the right place?
Thanks.

Wexford / Strange Ferrybank features?
« on: Tuesday 10 September 13 22:48 BST (UK)  »
When I was growing up, I would often walk with my grandfather over to Ferrybank, across the then new, new bridge (which replaced what had been the previous "new bridge"). Immediately on crossing the bridge and reaching Ferrybank, just to the right, on the curve, was an area with several curious features, which I have never understood:
- Several circular, brick lined pits? These were sand filled in my day.
- Several odd rectangular walls/banks - vertical on one side, but with angular inclines on other side?
- These were all outside of the ruins of what had been some sort of building right on the sea.
Would love to know what these were! I believe these items are now all long gone.

Just further on was a feature I did understand/know of - the launch slipway into the river from the Great War US Navy seaplane base. Still there, I believe.

Wexford / Dateable features in Wexford photos
« on: Tuesday 10 September 13 22:17 BST (UK)  »
Just wondering if anyone can provide dates for the construction of some of the notable features that can be seen (or not) in photos of Wexford, such as
- The Italianate belltower of the Franciscan church
- The characteristic "woodenworks" along the quays - now gone.
- Redmond monument.
- 1798 monument - I believe this postdates 1898 by some number of years.
- Any others?

Can some kind soul please provide information on the memorial inscription for the Fortune family of Bunargat/Bunargate Co. Wexford - I believe this was transcribed by Mr. Cantwell.

Wexford / Location of "Sea View", Wexford in 1865?
« on: Monday 16 May 11 06:39 BST (UK)  »
The death registration for a g-g-g-grandmother of mine says she died in Sea View, Wexford, in 1865. Now I know that there was a terrace called Sea View off of Trinity street, but not sure that that was built by 1865. Any other alternatives that anyone knows of?
Thanks,

Dublin / Need help with finding records for Sarah Roche born Dublin ca 1879/80
« on: Monday 02 May 11 00:15 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to link back a Roche family of Bootle (Liverpool), with my Roches of Co. Wexford, so far without success, despite years of effort. On the English 1891 census Sarah Roche is shown as 11 years old, parents John and Katherine Roche.  Sarah Roche is shown as born in Dublin, while her parents are both Co. Wexford.
So, far, so good, but then the problems start:
1) No Sarah Roche, with parents as above in Dublin civil registration up to and including 1880, per searches through LDS microfilms and online indices.
2) Indeed, no matching Sarah Roche birth anywhere in Ireland in civil registration!
3) No Sarah Roche birth in online Catholic parish records for Dublin.
4) Have not been able to find parents marriage either!
Any suggestions for what to do next, or what other resources to try.

Thanks,

Wexford / Location of Paradise Row, Wexford, on OS maps
« on: Monday 25 April 11 21:37 BST (UK)  »
My great-grandfather lived for many years on Paradise Row, which is one of the vanished streets of Wexford.  I thought it would be relatively easy to find Paradise Row on the OS 1/25" maps of Wexford which are now available online. However, not so, did not spot the place, which I thought was in the vicinity of Grogan's Road.
Could someone provide a link to the OS maps, showing the location of Paradise Row?

Wexford / Earliest parish register for Castlebridge located?
« on: Monday 25 April 11 20:48 BST (UK)  »
Back in 1998 I tried to trace the ancestry of my grandfather's grandmother, Margaret Roche. She is believed to have come from the vicinity of Ardcolm/Castlebridge, so I started out by taking a look at the microfilm copy of the earliest Castlebridge register at the Wexford Town library. Unreadable.
So, I went over to Castlebridge to take a look at the original. The parish secretary was very obliging - provided me with the second (later) register to take a look at (which was, by the way, in very poor shape). However, I was informed that the first (oldest) register was missing and had not been seen since they had sent it to the Wexford Genealogy Centre for indexing several years before.

So, question is: was the original Castlebridge parish register ever found/returned?

Wexford / Questions about St. Selskar's/Margaret Roche
« on: Monday 25 April 11 20:21 BST (UK)  »
Brief version:
1) Who is responsible for maintaining St. Selskar's Graveyard?
2) Have they kept any of the damaged/vandalised memorials?

Longer version:
My grandfather's grandmother, Margaret Roche, is buried in St. Selskar's churchyard, along with a a grandson, and (probably) her first husband, John Evoy.  While I growing up in Wexford my grandfather would often point out to me through the locked gates where she was buried, but we were unable to actually enter the churchyard at the time as it was closed for many years.
Many years later, in 1998, I was excited to discover that St. Selskar's was open! So, I went in and rushed over to the spot that my grandfather (God rest him) had so often pointed to.

Only to discover that the grave had been vandalised......

I was able to locate and recognise the correct grave, as there was a remaining base with an inscription for her grandson, but the original memorial cross was entirely missing.
Making some enquiries, I was told that the graveyard memorials were extensively vandalised by youths in the late 80s/through mid 90s. Dreadful that all they could find to occupy themselves  was to destroy the memorials of their ancestors. Be that as it may, I wondered if there was any chance that the vandalised memorials had been saved/put away for safe keeping (though I strongly suspect they were simply tossed).

So, back in 1998 I called round the CofI, Town Hall and County Council to find out who is responsible for the maintenance of St. Selskar's graveyard.  Everyone asserted that it was someone else, no one accepted that they were responsibile. So, I came away empty handed - did not know which was worse, the original vandalism, or that no one accepted responsibility for St. Selskar (it has to be one of the three bodies I just mentioned).

So, having been back to Wexford a week ago, and seeing St. Selskar - locked up again - I wonder if anyone here can answer the questions I started out with (above).

Thanks,
