Ireland / NAI Genealogy Site Down
« on: Saturday 04 March 23 05:58 GMT (UK)  »
How long has it been down - at least a day now, I think?
These days always have to worry that a site may be hacked, rather than under maintenance.

Ireland / Souney alias Allice - Allice alias Souney. Strange!
« on: Wednesday 15 February 23 20:39 GMT (UK)  »
I first noticed these unusual back-to-back baptisms from April 1775 in Our Lady's Island when I looked at the original registers 25 years ago. I was reminded when I came across them again last night. In the first baptism, the child is named Souney, alias Allice. In the second, Allice, alias Souney. Can anyone understand this?

Separately in another baptism, a sponsor is named as Mary Walsh, alias Rashford. Am I right in interpreting this as Mary was then married to a Walsh, and previously to a Rashford?

Thanks

Ireland / Unusual Term for Sponsors in Baptismal Register
« on: Wednesday 25 January 23 21:09 GMT (UK)  »
The mid 18th century entries in the Lady's Island baptismal register consistently use the term goshop or ghoshop  for sponsors - the spelling varies. It may also read gossop or ghossop depending on writing.   I consulted dictionaries to no avail - what does this word mean?

Here is a link to a random page with examples.

Dublin / Can you get 1864-1871 death registration copies same day in Dublin?
« on: Tuesday 17 January 23 17:50 GMT (UK)  »
That is, if you are in Dublin, is there a facility where one can obtain a same-day research copy of death certificates from the 1864-1871 period? The period that is not available online.
There may be more than one such location?

Looked in the "Dublin Resources" section, and did not see anything obvious.

Ireland / What to do with Old Style Dates - Convert them?
« on: Monday 16 January 23 21:43 GMT (UK)  »
This is something I ran into decades ago and put to one side.
Is there a standard way to deal with Julian calendar/Old Style (OS) dates?

I have a few such dates in my family tree. For consistency, I think they should be converted to Gregorian calendar/New Style?
Do people do that?
And on what level to convert - Just the  year, that is changing Jan/Feb/Mar to the next year, or convert the entire date, that is day. month and year, all of which could in general differ?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Profession of Mathew Devereux?

On this extract from a marriage registration. It may say "M Doctor" but that seems a strange abbreviation, and may also be wishful thinking  ;D
Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Reading of 1791/92 Marriage Entry
« on: Saturday 31 December 22 02:29 GMT (UK)  »
I am interested to hear what the gentlefolk of these here parts make of this marriage register entry from the 24th February 1791 or 92 (year is unclear). In particular, the parts I have labeled with a "?" below.
A very unusual register entry, in that the name of the bride precedes that of the groom.
My reading, translated to English, is

Anna Magil,  James? ditto (father's name), of (blank) & Patrick (or Peter?) Crane of
Raheenaske, witnesses  ? Redmond, ? Laffin, & Thomas Donnolly,
at the house of her brother ? Magil.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Word in Registry Of Deeds Memorial
« on: Friday 30 December 22 20:46 GMT (UK)  »
Memorials in the Registry of Deeds employ some standard abbreviations. There is what is probably one in the first line of the attached extract that is stumping me.
What I can make out is:
"A memorial of an ... of lease bearing date the 12th day of February 1806 made"

Thanks in advance

Wexford / James Redmond, Baptized 1-May-1865 in Gorey?
« on: Friday 16 December 22 05:32 GMT (UK)  »
So says FamilySearch.  But I don't see such a baptism on the NLI microfilm, or surrounding pages
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634070#page/104/mode/1up

Am I missing something?

Background:
The family of Moses Redmond and Catherine Crean (or Crane) lived in the townland of Ballywalterbeg (often rendered as just Ballywalter). However, there is no baptismal record of many of their children in their home parish of Ballygarrett. The "obvious" answer, given that they weren't heathens, is that the children were baptized  in a more convenient adjacent parish, such as Gorey.  And indeed, when I tested this theory out with James Redmond, born ca. 1865, it immediately said yes!
-  James Redmond, baptized 1-May-1865 in Gorey to the above parents.

But I see no such baptism  :(
