London and Middlesex / Irene Gertrude BISS - 2nd marriage? children? burial?
« on: Wednesday 22 February 23 12:17 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening, everyone, from Adelaide, South Australia, where I am up late researching while trying to ignore the 31C heat at 10:30pm.

Hoping someone might help me, please.

Irene Gertrude ISAAC:
b. 9 Apr 1909, Carmarthen, Wales
m. 1941 to Evan Alexander BISS (he died serving in Italy, 1944)
d. 29 Oct 1968 (St Marylebone, London); address at time of death, according to probate records, was 14 Highgate, West Hill, Camden, London

Administration of will was in Llandaff in July (of 1969, I assume, and assume in Cardiff - her parents and grandparents were Welsh).

I have tried A*cestry, Find .. Grave and Bill'n Graves and cannot find a burial site for Irene. I'm also wondering if she had children or remarried, but am doubting this as she was still BISS at the time of her death and there is no mention of a beneficiary in the probate record.

Suggestions would be very welcome, please.

Thank you.

Dunbartonshire / Hydropathic Establishment, Row, Dunbartonshire

Hello everyone,

I'm hoping that someone might be able to help me, please.

In the 1881 Scotland Census, my great-grandfather, the Rev. Andrew Fuller MILLS, is listed as a 'boarder' at:

Hydropathic Establishment, Row, Dunbartonshire

My understanding, mainly from a little Googling and memories of film and TV, is that people would go to such places to take 'the water cure'. It seems to have become a rich person's indulgence, with the benefits of hydrotherapy coming second to long lunches and gossip.

Can anyone shed any light on this establishment at all? Would it have been the Shandon Hydropathic Establishment, formerly West Shandon House and afterwards the Shandon Hotel?

I don't have any way of knowing why my Rev. was there. I believe he would have been a Minister (Baptist) in Glasgow at the time.

Thanks in advance for any help.

M.

Carmarthenshire / Re: Political parties in Wales - help with definitions please
« on: Monday 13 February 23 09:59 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you all so much for your replies, they are very helpful.

The political suggestions definitely make sense from what I understand of the Reverend. I'm lucky to have so much information around him still available, and people like yourselves to help me find it.

hanes teulu, thank you for the comments about the church at Carmarthen. I'd love to see it for myself one day.

Carmarthenshire / Political parties in Wales - help with definitions please
« on: Sunday 12 February 23 11:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hello from Adelaide, South Australia.

Hoping someone can help me please.

My great-grandfather, Andrew Fuller MILLS, was a Baptist minister and Mayor of Carmarthen 1920/21; 1924 and 1926.

When researching him, there are numerous comments about him being a 'Liberal' and also a 'Radical' in politics. Can someone please help me with these terms?

In Australia, a Liberal is Conservative / right wing and a Radical is, of course, very much left wing.

Is the Liberal party more to the left in Welsh politics?

Thank you very much,

M.

Thank you all so much.

I am so sorry. I have been hit with the stupid stick this morning.

I couldn't find the details in *ncestry etc so I assumed I had hit a brick wall instead of going back to basics. So sorry. Have been out of the game for a while and finding it hard to focus.

Many, many thanks. I have parentage details, thank you all.

I think I'll get another coffee  ::).

Australia / MILLS, Dixon Fuller: help with WA birth certificate please
« on: Sunday 05 February 23 00:20 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning, all,

I am trying to find my uncle's birth details. His full name is MILLS, Dixon Fuller.

He served in WWII (service no. 17323) and his service records give a birth date of 2 Nov 1919 in Albany, WA.

A search on Find-a-Grave gives a birth year of 1920 but unfortunately there is no photograph of the site.

Would someone point me in the right direction, please?

Many thanks,
M.

The bio on the Rev is so useful, thank you so much. Since it shows where he was pastor, it will help so much in finding other records.

I am still muddling around the edges; my research is quite erratic and I haven't been able to kick the habit of jumping from one family or individual to the other and then losing track of what I've found and where I've found it!

I am likely to be back ... thanks again.

I am supposed to be getting ready for work, so just a quick but necessary thank you for now, will be back tonight.
