Completed Census Requests / Here's a nice one: John Smith - Completed Thanks
« on: Sunday 01 May 11 11:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could help locate my ggg-grandfather, John Horace Smith (1850-1895) in any censuses.
I already have him in the 1881 census, where he is living with his wife and six children in High Street, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. He is working as a labourer.
He was born in Baldock, Hertfordshire in 1850.
He married Martha Haggar (1845-1929) in 1869 after two of their children were already born.
They moved to Staines, Middlesex c1877 and then settled for good in Walton-on-Thames in c1879.
Any help gratefully recieved.
Thanks :)

Hi and thanks again

The question mark might indicate they weren't inmates, but just staying overnight? I'm not sure.

It's great that you've found Louisa and Margaret in the 1891 census.

Was Louisa a scholar in 1891 or was she already working?

Well once again you're right

Margaret said she was born in London in the 1881 census.

Seems a bit like a broken family...

Does she have an occpuation or is she just living off charity?

This is very interesting, thanks very much!

p.s. Have you got any ideas for 1901 census (please, please, please)?

Perfect, suttontrust!

That's her, for sure. She was 31 on the 1911 census if this is her - Louisa Tivey, 31, St Pancras.

My grandmother told me that she always ate only bread, even at Christmas dinner she just had some bread; maybe this is a habit she developed from her time in the orphanage.

She had no siblings that I know of, probably because of her parents short-lived marriage.

But where was Maggie; why did she give Louisa up?

Thanks again

Thank you very much for replying.

It seems interesting that Louisa could have in an orphanage in 1891. Her father died in 1882 sadly and maybe her mother couldn't raise her. Her mother lived until 1939.

Unfortunately I don't have the marriage certificate, but my great-grandmother does so next I see her I'll ask her. She was probably in London as my grandfather said she lived there all her life.

The orphanage seems likely - how old was she?

Thanks again - CVS

Back again.
I promised a photo of Jane Whittle (1883-1979), wife of George Whittle (died 1944).
Not sure if she is definitely connected to the fairground, but she has been mentioned here a couple of times.
She lived in Walton-on-Thames (Chertsey, Weybridge Union, Surrey).

Hello there,
My great-great grandmother was Louisa Blunt, born 17 November 1878 in St James, Westminster.
Her parents were Francis 'Frank' Blunt (1857-1882), a fishmonger and Margaret 'Maggie' Brennan (1859-1939), a laundress.
Louisa married Charles Ascot Tivey in St Pancras 1901.
I can't find Louisa on any census except 1881. Any help please?
Thanks

Hello there,
I notice several people have mentioned George and Jane Whittle (nee Sedgwick), who are my great-great grandparents. George died in 1944. He was a 'Miller Oil Mill' in 1901 and a general labourer in 1924.
Jane Sedgwick married him in 1902 in Walton-on-Thames and they had about 12 children, including those mentioned in this topic Thomas William Whittle (1908-1974) and my great grandfather George Thomas Whittle (1902-1992).
Jane died in 1979 aged 96; I will post a picture of her once my internet works again.
Some people have mentioned that these people are connected to the Fairground Whittle's, but I can't prove or disprove this.
There are two coincidences: George Thomas Whittle was a boilermaker. His father was born in Putney, which has been mentioned before.
Is there any connection; or should I start a new topic about George and Jane?
