Hi its me again!
Looking for one more lookup from Shanew147 in Thoms.
Was just wondering if the Fr. Patrick Mcdonnell I asked about earlier was a curate in Ballylinan Queens County in or around 1873.
Reason is that I think his sister married here in Nov. 1873 .She would have been from Rosenallis Laois and her husband from Bagenalstown Carlow and this whilst about halfway between the 2 places it strikes me as an unusual place to marry unless her brother was a curate there.
According to RootsIreland
Mary Mcdonnell of Dirlanogue married Thomas Maher of Carlow in Ballylinan on 13th November 1873 and the priest was Fr. Patrick Mcdonell.
If this is the correct woman she would have been from Derelamogue so address looks like a misspelling or transcription.

Thanks for reading.

Ireland / Re: Ellen Mullen/Mullins
« on: Tuesday 26 March 13 22:10 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks again

Saw those Mullens,Old Leighlin on Griffiths and thought they might be a likely match.
That would be the same RC parish as where she was married ie Leighlinbridge.
Seskin, the Ridge Old Leighlin and Leighlinbridge are in the same parish and general ares.
Could be the answer because as far as I know there were no letters of freedom mentioned with the marriage records. I know that the name Mullen is not in that area anymore .Never heard anyone in the family mention that area as somewhere we had (have )relations and they(my family)were pretty good at that sort of thing!!
Must go back and look at the Dower and general Tipp. connection sometime.

On a related but different note;is it transcription errors or did people use so many different versions of their names at the time?Find it to be a tad annoying at times!!

The above woman variously was, on official documents
Ellen Mullen
Ellen Mullins
Eliza Mullen
Eliza Mullins
Her daughter was baptised Ellen Mary Byrne and was;
Ellen Byrne (census and marriage)
Ellen O Byrne (original passport)
Eileen Maria Byrne (passport again)
Eileen Mary O Byrne.

After getting so much help here anytime I have posted (esp. Shanew147) decided to chance my arm one last time!
Having tried this on Ancestry,RootsIreland,Familysearch and a few more places decided to let the real experts have a go!

The person I am looking for help on is Ellen Mullen/Mullins.
The facts(well as much as I know)

Ellen Mullen/Mullins was married to Timothy Byrne (abt.1849- 26th Oct. 1909) on 16th April 1872 in Leighlinbridge Carlow.
They had 8 children that I know of; John(1873-1905) Patrick(1875-1951) James(1878-1949) Michael(1880-?) Mary(1882-1951) Anne(1885-1972) Maggie(1887-1939) Ellen(1889-1968).
She lived all her married life in Seskin Carlow and died there Feb. 1920.

Her birthday was 29th December(according to an entry in her daughters diary "had a mass said on mothers birthday ")
Born about 1852 (using census)
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Carlow/Rathornan/Seskin_lower/1043488/
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Carlow/Rathornan/Seskin_Lower/314484/

On the Parish register her address on marriage is given as Mensal Lodge ,Old Leighlin, Carlow.
I assume that she was working there as the family that owned it then are still there and definitley no relation. Was wondering if she was from Carlow would she not have given her home address on marriage or even home parish?

Marriage witnesses and baptismal sponsors give no real clues.
Any and all searches that I have tried have came up with no stand out matches.Know that she used both Mullen and Mullins as maiden name.

Now the long shot!
Her son Patrick(O)Byrne died in Waterford in 1951 and the mourners included a Mr and Mrs Ml Dower Clonmel as cousins of the deceased.From the paper;

"The remains were received at the Cathedral by Rev. W. Hallinan, Rev. P. Power officiating at the graveside.
The chief mourners included Mrs Margt. O'Byrne (widow), Mr Timothy O'Byrne (son), Mr Denis Nolan (nephew), Mr & Mrs ML Dower and Mr David O'Rourke Clonmel (cousins). "

Know that Dowers were related (long story ) to Patrick Byrne but nobody knows exactly how .The above mentioned Michael Dower and David O Rourke are cousins of one another .This is the same family in 1911.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tipperary/Inishlounaght/Rathkeevin/908650/

I assume it was through Patrick Byrnes mother ie Ellen Mullins  and not his father that the relationship existed but maybe wildly off the mark.Dower being such an unusual name said this might be worth a try.

Looking for fresh angle etc to try .Any questions please ask.

Thanks for reading.

Denis.

Unsure if this should be in a specific county forum or not.

Thanks for all that.

Was just talking to my mother and she told me that he is buried in Graiguenamanagh and a lamp(light?) in Duiske Abbey has his name etc. inscribed on it.
Looks likely then that this was his last parish.

Once again thanks for the info.Must look at Hacketstown and try to see if anything about him is available there.

Wow that was quick.
He is buried in Graiguenamanagh as far as I am aware and had a quick look for him on the 1901 census and doesnt appear to be there so am assuming he died pre 1901.

If he is buried there that would prob. mean that he was serving there when he died ?

Hacketstown would fit the bill as his sister Ann married about 1864 to a man called John Keogh from Oldtown Hartstown Wicklow(not a million miles from Hacketstown).

His sister Mary was married(?) in the early 1870s to a Maher from Bagenalstown Carlow(not that far from Graiguenamanagh).

The wedding dates I have guessed at from looking at the ages of their children from the 1901 and 1911 census.

From where did you get the info. regarding priests serving in parishes?

Thanks again.

Denis

Hi
Was just wondering is there any way of finding out in which parishes a particular priest served during the 19th century?
Person I am interested in was Fr. Patrick Mcdonald/Mcdonnell.
He was born about 1831 in Derrylamogue Rosenallis Queens County son of Daniel Mcdonald and Mary Griffin.Had at least 2 sisters;Mary Maher Carlow and Ann Kehoe/Keogh Wicklow and 2 brothers James and Daniel.
I do know that he served for a time in Graiguenamanagh Kilkenny (think there is either a plaque or headstone to him in Duiske Abbey.
The reason I am looking for where he was based is that I believe both his sisters married and lived a long way from their home which strikes me as unusual for the time.
Thanks for reading. If anyone wants any more info. or can help then please reply.

Ellen Doran baptised in Bagenalstown 11 Jan. 1833;parents  John Doran and Mary Magra; sponsors Matthew Doran and Nelly Murphy.(address given as Bagenalstown)
Aged 19 in 1852 and 28 in 1861 ;possible it may be her.
Any help to you ?

Same parents?;Mara-Magra ?
10 Dec. 1820 ;Mich. Doran  (address Ballymoon);sponsors John Mara and Mary Finlan.
29 Sept. 1823;Anne Doran  (address Dunleckney);sponsors  Patc. Kinsela and Anne Cummins.
02 Aug. 1827;Mary Doran  (address Ballymoon)sponsors Tom Magra and Mary Walsh.

Dunleckney and Ballymoon are adjoining are are often used to describe the same general area. Both are less than 1 mile from Bagenalstown.
Seskin(Seskinryan ) is pretty close also;maybe a mile or so.

Bagenalstown(Dunleckney) baptismal register from 1820 to 1849 available on line.

Carlow / Re: Griffith family in Carlow

Hi
The Mary Brady(nee Griffith) I mentioned would(?) prob. have been a antecedent to the Margaret Griffith whose will was on the first page of the replys. They lived in the RC parish of Bagenalstown (Dunleckney). Not sure which C of I parish it would be.Most likely to be the same Griffiths as found on the 1901 census living at house no.9  Newtown  DED of Agha Carlow.Bradys found in the adjoining townsland of Ballytarsna DED Templepeter.

Have a Mary Griffith (born approx. 1798;died o8 Jan. 1889) married to Patt. Brady Ballytarsna Carlow in my family tree.Buried in Newtown Cemetary Carlow.
She is listed as (prot.) in the Dunleckney Parish records of the baptisms of their children (1828-1846)
Bradys lived in Cloneen and Ballytarsna Nurney (neighbours to where Griffiths farmed )
