Archie,

Whow -  this must have been some sight to see, pretty scary and confusion no doubt.  Thank you so much for telling me how it happened.

I think a petition is a great idea - very courageous.  I will certainly sign it.

Well done Archie,

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / BURN family from Aberlady
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 21:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi!

I'm looking for any references to the surname BURN from Aberlady - originally from Kingston, East Lothian.  This is what I have - although I know there will be errors with it!

David Thomson (b. 1794; d. 6th March 1870), Sawyer
m. Barbara Burn or Burns, d. between 1846-1851 (not on the 1851 census)
on 11th May 1822 in Aberlady

1841 Census for Aberlady, East Lothian:
David Thomson   47   Sawyer   Born in the Parish
Barbara Thomson   35         Born in the Parish

1911 Census – 16 Jeffrey Street, Canongate, Edinburgh
James Thomson   S   Uncle   76   Private Means      Retired      b. Aberlady

Staying or visiting James Muat and his family (my Great-Grandfather)

From this information I was able to establish that Barbara Burn who married in 1822 to David Thomson was born on 4th Oct 1802 at Haddington and baptised on 31st Oct 1802 to parents called James BURN and Barbara DARG.

James Burn and Barbara Darg were married on 1st Jan 1796 at Dunbar, East Lothian.  They had the following children:

Marrion Burn, b. 20th Sept 1800 (bapt. 28th Sept), Haddington
Barbara Burn, b. 4th Oct 1802, Haddington
Euphans Burn, b. 20th Apr 1805, Bolton, baptised 19th May 1805, Bolton

Barbara Darg was born on 13th May 1762 at Whitekirk, East Lothian to parents John Darg and Barbara Darg.

Barbara Burn or Thomson must have died between 1846-1851 as she is not listed in the 1851 census and David Thomson her husband is noted as being a widower.

I believe that the family surname must have been BURN.

From this information I was able to establish a relatively clear link to this surname in Dirleton, East Lothian:-

James Burn married Barbara Darg in Dunbar.  I believe that James Burn was the son of Alexander Burn and Marion Deans and he was born on 23rd Jan 1773, Dirleton, East Lothian.  Alexander Burn and Marion Deans had the following children following their marriage on 24th April 1768, Dirleton, East Lothian:-

*James Burn, b. 23rd Jan 1773, Dirleton
*Andrew Burn, b. 23rd Jan 1773, Dirleton
Anne Burn, b. 7th Au1770, Dirleton
*Rabina Burn, b. 12th Jan 1775, Dirleton
*John Burn, b. 12th Jan 1775, Dirleton

Any help or connections with this surname would really be appreciated.  Kind of hit a brick wall with expanding the branches of this particular family, so need some inspiration from someone!

Many thanks:

An Ann Thow married a John Mouatt on 13/11/1796 at Benholm Kincardine. Spelling variations include Muat, Muatt etc. Ann's sister later had links with Dundee. One of the sister's sons was born in Dundee in 1813 and noted as named after his uncle-in-law, John Muat (?sp).

Thank you for that information - much appreciated.  Do you have any connection with Ann Thow/John Mouatt or did you just find the information?

Many thanks:

Longford / Re: SMALL surname in Longford

A few years after your Margaret was born - but might give you establish some possible locations for her family.

Griffith's Valuation show 11 entries for the surname Small, most in the area of Granard, but also two near Mohill. Included is a James in the townland of Ardaguillion who holds 'house & garden'  - which could fit with him being a contractor. There are several other Small households in the same townland. These entries are dated 1854.

Shane - where is Ardagullion? What was there around that time and what is there now?  Can't seem to find it on a map.  Would love to see a picture of it - or where it was - any idea where I might be lucky?

Longford / Re: re-new going to Longford..i'm a wally

Hi Christopher

Oh boy did I have a fantastic time!. As I walked round Dublin, Longford, Ennybeggs, Killoe, Ardagh, Corboy ........ and many other places ( I got a bit carried away with the walking!!!)  I felt like I was "home".
I had never been to Ireland in my life , yet I  must have  a deep routed gene of an ancestor , possibly a great explorer, as I always  felt like I knew where I was going . Ask any of my friends and they will tell you that I ony drive a 5 mile round trip to my childrens schools, don't do motorways, and frequently lose my direction when cycling in the area I have lived in for 32 years !!!.

Ps;- Unfortunately I still have quite a long way to go to get to the bottom of my " really annoyingly illusive ancestors ", even though I have gone through over 2 thousand birth, death, marriage, newspaper, army ect records.

The whole Fox - Johnstone - McCutcheon saga , along with the Latter Day Saints Penny's worth, is making my brain very sore!.

Ask me in a hundred years time and I may have got to the bottom of it.

God Bless
Gem x

Just loved reading about your trip - you are so funny, made me really laugh with the image of you walking everywhere.  Thanks for posting it - found it really enjoyable.
