Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / *HERTS PARISH & CENSUS RECORDS*
« on: Wednesday 01 June 05 12:44 BST (UK)  »
Herts Parish Records.

Herts Archives and Library Service (HALS)
http://www.hertsdirect.org/libsleisure/heritage1/HALS/
Holds all surviving parish records for Hertfordshire.  HALS does not offer these for sale on microfiche, only microfilm, so very few people own them.  A lot of parishes have been indexed by HALS and all Herts marriages up to 1837 have been indexed. (Allen Index)  This has been computerised and extended by Brian Gravestock and some marriages after 1837 have also been indexed. This together with many other records is available online.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,311449.0.html

Most of Hertfordshire's main libraries have Local Studies Rooms.  As well as containing lots of interesting local history books, they also contain microfilm of the parish records for that area.

Herts Family History Society
The HFHS has indexed a large proportion of Herts burials which are available online – pay to view at the Federation of Family History Societies website.

BVRI

Herts coverage on the British Vital Records Index, published the LDS, is very good, and many members own this, but if the baptism which you are looking for is not recorded there, or on the IGI,
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true then the only real option is HALS.

All pre-1837 Hertfordshire marriage are now online courtesy of HALS.

Herts Census

1841 – 1901 Census information is available from Ancestry.co.uk by subscription, and on findmypast.com on a pay as you go basis.

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/

http://www.findmypast.com/welcome.jsp

The 1911 census is only currently available from findmypast.

1881
The transcribed 1881 census is available free of charge courtesy of the LDS;

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

If you wish to look at the original document, these are availble at Ancestry.com and Findmypast.com.

All censuses and most parish records are available for viewing for a nominal fee at LDS Family History Centres worldwide.

Herts Completed Lookup Requests / WESSON Family Lookup.
« on: Sunday 05 September 04 18:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rick - thank you very much for your kind offer. I'm looking for a William b abt 1803 or Walter Wesson b abt 1804, or even another Walter b abt 30 years later all from St. Albans, are there many Wessons in the census?

I'm going to visit the records office next week from Southampton and would appreciate a little more info than I have at the moment

Patrick

Patrick

I  am sorry but I cannot find any WESSONS on the 1851 index for St Albans and the surrounding area.  I do not have the 1851 index for Watford I'm afraid.  Likewise, neither William nor Walter appear to be living in Herts in 1871.

Sorry not to be able to help

Rick
