Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Re: death of William Langham, All Saints, Leicester
« on: Tuesday 25 October 11 19:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi Mike,

I'm very grateful to you for all the information you have, again, very kindly given me - couldn't be more delighted with it.

I'm very puzzled though, by:

Burial, All Saints, Leicester 2/8/1836, Mary Langham aged 82

because if this IS William Langham's wife, then she was born about 1754; (he was baptised in Shearsby on 25/12/1772). So, when they married in All Saints on 21/11/1791, she would have been 37, but he would have only been (nearly) 20! Also, it does not say that she was a widow, on their marriage cert.

Please, would you be so kind and see if there is another Mary Langham, buried in All Saints between 1797 and 1841? Do you think her age at death is correct? I would very much value your input.

Finally, re the burial in 1824 of William Langham, in Shearsby, aged77. Please can you tell me if there is a date?

Thanks again Mike, you have been brilliant.

Chris

Hi Mike,

Thanks to you I have managed to find, on the IGI:

William Langham bap 25/12/1772 Shearsby, Leicestershire  Parents William Langham and Mary

and William Langham m Mary Goodman Shearsby, 9/1/1772

I am thrilled!

Can I ask one final favour?  Please could you tell me if William Langham buried All Saints, 7/12/1818, was the only William Langham to be buried in All Saints from about 1795 to 1841?

If there is another (or others even), please could you give me the details?

Many thanks,

Chris

Thanks again Dobby,

I don't think that my John Hirst was the one bap 1795 in Hallas, 'cos in censuses, he states that he was born in Hepworth (Ellin his Mum was from Hepshaw, Hepworth).

Once again, there's lots for me to mull over!

Kindest regards,

Chris

Thank you very much for that Mike, I am so grateful for and delighted to have that.
I'm so glad that it gave his age, as this might now help me to find his birth.

Thanks again,

Chris

Hi,

Please would anyone be so kind as to look up the death of William Langham in All Saints, Leicester for me ?

I know he was alive in 1795, but haven't got a clue when he died, so I'd be very grateful if the search would extend from 1795 to about 1841 (I can't find him on any census record).

Just to confuse the issue, there may well be more than one William Langham.

Many thanks,

Chris

Hi Dobby,

I'm fast reaching the conclusion that you are certifiable! (by the way, I passed that stage a long time ago!).

Seriously, John Hirst married Rachel Mare in Kirkburton, All Hallows in 1823. He was described as being from the parish of Emley; so it fits in with him working in Uncle Matthew's coal business. (Rachel was OTP).

Kindest Regards,

Chris

Hi Dobby,

I still think that mine are the Emley mob; I've had a look on Ancestry for John Jaggar's will and did not find anything - his widow, Susannah married within 3 weeks of his death (blimey!) and I have tracked her down (census records), after being widowed for the third time,  living with one of her daughter's (not John's) in Penistone and she is described as a pauper. I think that Matthew Jaggar made his money after John's death. I am still trying (unsuccessfully up to now) to find out what happened to John and Susannah's children. Oh the thrill of the chase!

Kind Regards,

Chris

Hi Dobby,

I'm still mulling things thru, but I have found the following:

Matthew Jagger bap 1747 K'Burton
John Jagger bap 28/2/1755 also KB. Both have Abraham as father.

And

John Jagger bap 16/11/1760 Emley Parents: Robert and Beatrice Jagger
Matthew Jagger bap 13/6/1773 Emley Parents: Robert and Elizabeth Jagger

Now I have also found the following marriage:

John Jagger m Ann Walker in KB on 27/12/1779 both OTP  But neither of them signed

So, I think that this John is the one bap 28/2/1755

Also, on the Matthew Jagger m Elizabeth Jessop marriage in Penistone 15/10/1810, Matthew signed and also the wits (John Jaggar and Jas Jagger) signed.

So, I began to think that my 2 were the Emley ones, so back to Emley parish records and Census.

I have also found several other children of Robert and Beatrice/Elizabeth, inc:

James s of Robert and Betty Jaggar bap May 21st 1775 and Robert s of Robert and Elizabeth Jagger bap Jan 25th 1767.

So, my John and Matthew were (half) brothers.

Matthew is on the 1841 Census in KB District 6, with Elizabeth and some of his family.

Finally, Emley, burial  Oct 2nd 1842;

Matthew Jaggar, Shelly in KB age 69

So both his age and John's (buried in Penistone) fit the Emley baps.

I've also found that, Matthew had at least one son, also John Jagger who on various censuses is described as retired Colliery Owner; they live in Linfit Lane, in KB - this is the same address as my John Hirst, when he is baptising his children, and I suspect that my JH worked in the Jagger family business, and it was Uncle Matthew witnessing his marriage. Great!

I think I have now got my man! I've also found a marriage for John's parents, so I'm delighted, but there are still a few lose ends to tie up. Your help along the way has been invaluable; I don't think I would have got this far without it. Thanks again Dobby, you have been brilliant! One final thing, do you happen to know where Sophley is in Penistone?

Thanks again,

Chris
