1861 Edward Hoey mariner in Rottingdean Sussex aged 36 wife Martha aged 36 dau Martha aged 11 Mary Jane aged 6 Edw Chas aged 6 John Daniel aged 2, and Honora Catherine aged 5 months, in 1871 only John Daniel at home with Edward (coastguard) and Martha found Edward Charles a hairdresser as a lodger at 14?.

Nothing for Honora Catherine, I know she survived as I found her later but no trace for 1871. Nothing for Mary Jane (born abt 1855), Martha (born abt 1850) died I think in 1877 but nothing for 1871. So 3 girls missing in 1871?

Any ideas please, Peter.

PS Eliza Ann Russell died in 1848, so very much a red herring.

Hi thanks for that we now know that Eliza Lutton, should have been shown as Sar (Sarah) Sutton and this then confirms all the rest.

Thanks for your help on this, kind regards Peter.

Thanks again lizdb, I will have to look again at Elizabeth An or Mary, agree with your ideas on Sarah, that seems to be the solution, on to the next one!. Today I am off to Wales and will meet and speak to a 2nd cousin that I discovered via Ancestry, kind regards Peter.

I have got the B/C for William George Russell and no father indicated, I guess on the question of Elizabeth, I may have to invest some money in collecting some B/C's going for the most likely first.

Kind regards Peter.

In the 1851 Scotland census I did find an Eliza Ru(f)sell born in England in about 1839, so I was pinning my hopes that she was the one. The other explanation is more plausible is that she died, hay ho, thanks again to everyone. My search continues for Elizabeth and that now seems more plausible if she was called Elizabeth Ann, I did check to see if she had died but found no records.

We did have an Elizabeth in the 1851 census but after that is a problem, their father died in 1859 and this split up the family, no record found of 1861 census, this could have helped a great deal.

The 1871 census is a nightmare, I took the something Sutton as -do- meaning Eliza 28 dtr widow, but I think it could have been Sarah because her year of birth would be abt 1843,so this fits.

William George is the son of unmarried Sarah and she had him registered at birth as William George Russell (Feb 1870) and when Sarah married Thomas Wyatt she said that her surname was Sutton, although she said that she was a spinster and renamed her father Robert Sutton or was this a misunderstanding as she was Sarah Russell AKA Sarah Sutton.

Thanks all, it seems that Eliza Ann died in 1848, so will look at that record and then they had Elizabeth Ann in 1848.

Will keep digging, thanks for all your advice, regards Peter

Looking for the above Eliza Ann was born in 1840 in Deptford Kent to Robert George Russell and Eliza nee Stone. Elizabeth (Ann or Mary?) was born in about 1848/49 in Deptford, no trace found of baptism. Have followed a number of leads that have been a wild goose chase, and I think I will most likely solve these if someone has them in their tree as documentary evidence seems to be lacking.

Regards Peter
