The Lighter Side / Re: Family legends that turn out to be nonsense

Sorry Heather, No knowledge, but I can enquire. We had a neighbour, George Edden, who recently died in his nineties, and my only recent contact with the family is with Roy Ashwood, a local man, who has written a book ("Old Balaclava") about his VC ancestor.

Hi Matt, we must be related!!!  My maternal Grandmother was an Edden and the family story was that Sir Anthony had originally had the surname Edden but had removed a 'd' to make the name sound less harsh.  Unless Sir Anthony descended from Plasterers from Bury St Edmunds then I think this is very unlikely!  :)

[/quote]Hello Heather,
There are Eddens in this area (Tamworth, Staffs), one of whom was awarded the VC after the Balaclava bust-up. Any links?
Maurice.

What are the chances of (a local example) Francis married to Frances?  Sadly the male half has now expired.

Thanks for the reply,
The person I am looking for lived in Wolverhampton, which I think comes under Staffordshire, and died in about 1980.
I looked on freebmd and I found a birth and a marriage but I couldn't find their death record. I also looked on family search website but I couldn't find them on there either.
In 1980 Wolverhampton had already transferred to West Midlands.(from 1974)

My Mother was the youngest of 10 children, but from three marriages, both her parents having been widowed. She was the only only born in the 20thC. Two of her sisters died childless, but another had 14 children, including one set of twins. At one time I had at least 36 cousins living.

I was also interested to see that her Indian forebears took a "western" name in addition to their given name, but that no family name was used. I recall that during my time in British Guiana in the 1950s,  many locals of Indian extraction, caste unknown, used only one given name, but others, including the "rebel", whose actions had caused us to to be posted there, also some well-known sportsmen (Sonny Ramadhin) had both given and family names.
