Lanarkshire / Re: 1901 Census - Atwell - Glasgow

Hi Monica

That entry would tend to suggest that James, 22 (my GF) is not married in 1901 or his wife would be listed with him.  Strange as my mother is quite sure he was married three times but she must be wrong.

I don't have a copy of his 1906 marriage registration (that'll have to wait until I'm back in the UK) but I know he was married from 1906 until 1919 when his first wife died and he then married my Grandmother in 1921.

If there is no marriage registration for him between 1896 (when he was 18) and 1906 when I know he married, then I guess he was only married twice.

Lanarkshire / 1901 Census - Atwell - Glasgow

Hi

I'm still trying to piece together my Atwell family members and have now come across a possible third marriage of my Grandfather.  I am hoping the 1901 census will reveal these additional family details and would therefore be grateful for a lookup please.

My Grandfather is James Lawther Atwell b1878 Glasgow - he's probably living in Govan or Partick around this time.  I know he may have at least two children by this marriage; John and Alfred who will still be very young, perhaps 2 and 1 respectively.

I already have his marriages in 1906 and 1921 so I'm guessing this will be his first wife and family, possibly married sometime between 1896 and 1900 in Glasgow.

Please note the family name Lawther could be spelled "Lauther" or "Lauder".

Many Thanks in advance.

Frank

Lanarkshire / 1881 Census Lookup - Hamilton
« on: Sunday 17 January 10 16:51 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to trace:

James and Annie Hamilton in 1881, possibly in Partick or Govan.

All I have is Annie's maiden name was Howitt/Howatt and they married in 1874 in Govan.  Details of any children would be good too.

Many thanks in advance,

Frank

I'm going to jump forward for now and request a separate 1881 lookup in a new thread.

Thanks Kirsty,

I couldn't see the reference but it seems too much of a coincidence for my Helen not to be a cousin or an aunt.

Thanks

Thanks again for your help Hume.

I think you are right re Jane's surname being Howit rather than Howard.  On a later marriage certificate for Helen it was transcribed as Howard.

I was beginning to think that James had been married before due to an entry in the  1851 Census I got off FreeCen:

1851 Scottish Census SCT1851/652 Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Parish - Calderbank
Folio 636 Pg 11 Schedule 33
Family living at 61 Stone Row
James (36) Heater (Iron)
Jane (21)  Renfrewshire - Govan
James (10) Lanarkshire - Anderston (must be son from a first marriage?)
John Howit (17) Lodger - Blacksmith - Renfrewshire - Govan

Note too the name "Howit" appearing, albeit John. I now think John was the younger brother of Jane (his next wife).

I guess Mary Gillespie Lawther must have died sometime between their marriage in 1840 and 1849 when he married Jane?

The surname Howit/Howatt crops up again in the family in December 1906 when Helen's son James marries a Maria Howit Hamilton in Glasgow.  I believe Maria was born in Port Rush, Ireland but I haven't been able to confirm that.

You kindly listed the birth dates of Jane/James children but one was missing:

Jessie Lawther bc 1852 - is her date listed?

A few more questions I know but your help is really appreciated.

Kind regards
Frank

Many thanks. Those dates help me a lot to confirm I have the right James Lauther/Lawther.
