Flintshire / Holywell St James lookup please
« on: Friday 31 October 14 02:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there - my 3x gt grandparents Sarah Jones and Samuel Edwards married at Holywell on 6 Feb 1808.  I've seen a transcription of the record and it was particularly helpful - confirming their birth dates and even giving both sets of parent's names.  Both were otp.  However the 1851 census states they were both born in Paisley Renfrewshire!!.  They were then living in Liverpool.  He died before 1861 and in this census the widowed Sarah was listed as being born in  Holywell.

I'd particularly like to confirm Samuel's birth.  The marriage record gives him a birth year of 1787 (as do census records)  parents John & Elizabeth Edwards.  Could someone please check and see if he was born in Holywell and if it is not too difficult any indication of his parent's marriage.

Sarah was born in 1788 parents Edward and Anne Jones on her marriage record.  Again I'd really like to know if she was indeed born in Holywell and any more information about her parents.

with many thanks

thank you that's really helpful.  In 1821 my 2x gt grandmother Ann Elizabeth was born to Samuel & Sarah in Liverpool so that 1821 Paisley record is not his but they have been such an impossible family to trace who knows!!

many thanks, Alison

Renfrewshire / Paisley parish baptism - Edwards
« on: Saturday 28 June 14 02:30 BST (UK)  »
My 3x gt grandfather Samuel Edwards stated on the 1851 Liverpool census that he was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire in approx 1787.  I'm not totally convinced as the same birthplace was given for his wife Sarah who was definitely born in Wales!   but I'd really appreciate it if someone could check  the baptismal records for him in Paisley.
with many thanks   Alison Molineux, New Zealand

Hi, I'm trying to confirm that my 3x gt grandmother Sarah Edwards nee  Jones who, according to the 1861 census  was born in Holywell  in c. 1788,  is the daughter of Edward Jones and Elizabeth nee Williams  and baptised in the Holywell RC church.  I've found a note to this effect but no evidence and wonder if anyone has access to the records.

I'm fairly certain she married Samuel Edwards in Nannerch in 1808 but once  again I would  like to confirm this and see if there is any further information in the records.  For eg. I think Samuel came from Renfrewshire and maybe this is stated on the record.

Hi there,

my Potter material is sketchy as i've only recorded stuff when/as families intersected with my Haynes ancesters.

There are 2 diff. John Potter of Milcombe/Bloxham wills on the OFHS website. around the time of william p's will.
It looks as if the younger(1610 will) John's son Richard was born  in Tadmarton - from the Tadmarton parish records where there is a Richard the elder d.  1569 (Thurstan's father)   and  a Richard the younger b 1556   (son of John  of Milcombe and Elizabeth nee Allen). After Richard their later children are born in Milcombe. I wondered whether John and Richard the elder were brothers.

THe next time they intersected  was when Richard the son of Richard Haynes& Eliz Wareing married Anne Stevens. Her mother was a swalcliffe treadwell and this family has several wills with Tadmarton or Swalcliffe Potters as relatives. I don't have thewills just a list of names
Mary Treadwell (1754) names brother in law john potter and wife joanna who have sons richard and robert
and grandson william
I think Mary was unmarrried (& that her sister Hannah married into my family).
This same John Potter was a kinsman to Dorothy Councer

In 1771 when  John makes a will he is (now?) of Bloxham - names wife Joanna sons richard and robert and mother! Martha Potter formerly Barret  (however his son Richard marries a Martha so Iwonder if the    transcriber made  mistake)

Finally Elizabeth Treadwell of SWALCLIffe mkes a 1764 will naming Joanna potter as her sister and    mentioning robt, richard and william  again

Joanna Treadwell was born 1707 Sibford d. of Wm & Mary

I'm sorry this is so sketchy.  I do have parish records for these places if helpful

Hello again

I've found the Potters a few generations earlier:  Elizabeth Potter married William HAYNES 4 Sep 1615 in Tadmarton.  She the daughter of Thurstan Potter & Edith nee Hyren, b.1589
he son of Charles Haynes & Margaret nee Writen, b.1581.    There are some Potter wills.  You may have this info already  if not i'm happy to forward what I have

thank you very much for this information.  I've come across the Potter family of Tadmarton somewhere else in my family tree reseach. I Think in  wills -  i'll check and pass any info on.  Meanwhile another researcher found  my Elizabeth's baptism to Henry and Anne nee  Marshall Wareing. She was born in 1713 and they married in 1695 Shipston on Stour.  Do you happen to know if Charles and Henry were related?

many thanks

Hi there,

George Phipps appears in one or two of my particular baptist Haynes family's wills and is related by marriage.
I don't know what information you have about him already but from the will of Thos Haynes d.1779 (available on internet)
"All the rest residue and remainder of my
Personal Estate and Effects of all Kinds whatsoever I give and devise
unto my Nephew George Phipps son of Richard Phipps of
Hooknorton aforesaid "
I have worked out that Richard Phipps married Jane Harris, sister to Mary Harris wife of Thomas Haynes.

As I say this Haynes family were particular baptist for quite a few generations and so birth records especially have been hard to find. I   think too there is asubtantial break in the hook norton c of e records around 1660 - 1720 which doesn't help!! Your Austins & Constables might be in that gap along with my Haynes!

I understand there were baptists in HN from c. 1640   but have found no records other than the very sketchy ones on BAN 01 .       have you discovered any others?

wills seem to be the best    source and there are lots of Austin wills on the oxfordshire family history website (from hook norton and tadmarton mainly) - hopefully you might find  Hannah's family there

hope some of this helps
Alison
