Glamorganshire / Phillip and Margaret Thomas
« on: Wednesday 11 November 20 19:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

A bit of a long post. I am hoping to get some help finding out what happened to Phillip and Margaret Thomas (my 5 x great grandparents).

There is a likely marriage for Phillip on the 14th January 1806 to Margaret Griffith at Llanedi parish church in the presence of Thomas William and William Jones.

Their son Daniel was baptised on the 12th January 1809 and daughter Sarah baptised on the 10th November 1811 in Llanedi Tynewydd Chapel. I haven’t found reference to any other children.

The 1841 census (HO107/1379/39/10) shows Phillip and Margaret in the Hendy Bridge Tollgate in Llanedi (Carmarthenshire). Phillip and Margaret both are recorded as 60 years old (looks like a case of rounded down ages) with their son Daniel (30, carpenter) and John Thomas (6). Plenty of interesting information available online about this tollgate for those interested in the Rebecca Riots.

Their son Daniel married Mary Wright (née Beddow) at Llanelli parish church on the 12th April 1842. Daniel was living in Llanelli and his father Phillip is recorded as a joiner.

I have found a death certificate for a Phillip Thomas who died on the 28th November 1846 in Bolgoed Cottage in nearby Pontarddulais aged 66. This Phillip was a labourer and died from debility. His death was registered by John Williams of the Fountain inn who was present at the death.

Not definitive but likely. Further support comes from the 1851 census (HO107/1379/39/10) for a Margaret Thomas living in Bolgoed Cottage (widow, age 75, born Pembrey, Carmarthenshire).

If the correct Margaret, this would suggest a birth year of around 1776. I have not found an 1861 census entry, so I have narrowed my search between 1851 and 1861 for a possible death.

There was one possible death in the Swansea district – 1857 (Apr-Jun; 11a; 312; Age 83) but this showed a death in Oystermouth (Gower), wife of David Thomas, general labourer.
Another possible death was in Llanelly district – 1855 (Apr-Jun; 11a; 338; Age 80) but this showed a death in Kidwelli, wife of William, farmer.

The son Daniel and his family lived in Llanelli in 1851 (HO107/2468/133/19) and in 1861 (RG9/4111/54/14). I do not know what happened to their daughter Sarah.

I have not found a burial for Phillip or a Margaret in the area yet.

Thanks for those who have read this far.

Could anyone possibly find the correct death or burial for Margaret or a burial for Phillip?

Thank you – Joshua

Hi,

I will have a closer look at the different David branches - two pairs of eyes will be better than one. So potentially Rowland and Morgan were cousins who both hailed from Eglwysilan?

With Jenkin's will, there is only mention of his children and no extended family mentioned.

Hi Maclemett!

I have not managed to find any further information about Rowland and Cecil (the parents), so I would be very grateful for any information you could share. I had found the Eglwysilan baptism like you, but was not sure as I could not find any further information to connect to our Rowland. I had also found a potential brother for the Rowland born at Eglwysilan (William baptised 1730). What are your thoughts?

Thanks everyone for your replies. Some interesting snippets there.

I did get excited about the death in Carmarthen in 1924, but on closer inspection this William was 63 when he passed away. However those newspaper ads do look very good for my William.

I will also look for more information about Sarah P Rees and David John Davies, even if just to eliminate this family.

Rosball - That immigration record does look promising, so I'll try and look for more information (as soon as I work out how to navigate that site!).

Thanks everyone - I'll follow these avenues to see what may pop up!

Australia / Reverend William Rees

Hi,

This is a bit of a long shot, but I am searching for any information relating to William Rees. The only information I have for William is as follows:

He was born around 1838 in Llanedy, Carmarthenshire, Wales, UK to David Rees and Mary (nee Hughes). He had 6 siblings John, Mary, Sarah, David, Ann and Margaret. I have William living with his parents in the Wales 1851 census as a labourer's son. However after this date, I have no reference of him until the 28th December 1917 in a newspaper article about the golden anniversary of his sister Margaret's marriage. It states "One of her brothers is Rev. William Rees, the Australian preacher and lecturer."

I am very curious to find out any information about William, especially due to the large gap between 1851 and 1917. I am presuming William is alive at the time of writing for the article as other siblings who have passed away were not mentioned.

I'm hoping someone with more experience of Australian records can shed some light on this elusive relative of mine.

Thanks,
Josh.

Okay, thanks both for your input.

Unfortunately, I have no idea who this is. Hopefully I can narrow it down, but it could be anyone (maybe not even related).

Thanks again

Hello everyone,

I have come across another old photo in my grandmother's collection.

As you can see, its a very bad photo of a picture. So I was hoping some very helpful person could help date the picture? Is the original a painting or a photo? I can not tell. And my third question, how old would you age this lady at? Hopefully someone can offer some suggestions to me, thank you.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay!
Very interesting regarding that information. I've saved it all to my records as you never know. I've been trying to connect the Lifton families of Hubberston and the area. However it's proving very tricky to do so. There's so many names that have been re-used throughout the generations which makes it complicated.

And wouldn't that Bible be brilliant to look at! I've never seen a George R Lifton record anywhere myself either. I wonder where that came from?!

Hi Mark,
I have seen that burial of William in 1796. The only problem I have with that is that William would have been in his sixties by the time Jacob was born, so I'm not sure if that burial burial belongs to the father of Jacob.

I've only been able to find 2 other children of William and Martha nee Lewis myself, that is James 1787 and Elizabeth 1791. The only Richard I have found so far, is one baptised in 1788 to William and Mary Smith. Yes, I've also been informed about the Quaker connection too from a relative.

I think it's possible that Ann and Mary could have been the same person, unless Mary died and then William married a Ann Smith. Yes, the age does seem a little old in my opinion, so perhaps its a generation before?
What is the William Lifton you have found up north?

@Dudley, I haven't yet come across the names you've mentioned, but perhaps someone else may have done so.

Josh
