Armed Forces / Headstones for WWI soldiers
« on: Thursday 13 September 18 00:46 BST (UK)  »
I was in the local cemetery yesterday and noticed a WWI headstone and as you do had to look the soldier up, while on CWGC I noticed a second WWI soldier listed in the same cemetery but he has no headstone. I met his grand nephew today and asked if he knew why, he didn't know.
The grave used to have a metal cross that has rusted away.
Would it be the case his family didn't want a military headstone (possibly given the mood in Ireland at the time)?
Is it still possible to get a military headstone on graves like his?

I don't know that his family would want one I'm just curious.
I did try googling but didn't get vey far.

Got another box of photos, great fun but most have no names.
This one however does have a name but I still haven't figured who she is, a date would help a lot with the search.
I tried to look up the photographer, I'm not the only one to have tried.
They were in business in 1880 and possible up to 1921. I think I've found the photographer in the 1911 Census Ernest aged 35, he may be the son as a Peter aged 66 is a photographer's assistant.
Any clues about her from the photo would be great.
Thank you

World War One / Football team, Army camp or POW camp?
« on: Sunday 19 August 18 23:39 BST (UK)  »
Any thoughts on this please?
One of the men in this photo/postcard sent it to his mother.
He was with the Irish Guards and spent most of the war as a POW, in Giessen Camp Germany.
I wondered if this postcard could be from the POW camp as it seems to have mix of uniforms or is it more likely to be from before they embarked for France.
Were priests allowed to visit the camps?
There is nothing on the back in the way of postage, censor mark or POW camp marks like another postcard he sent from Giessen.
He enlisted in 1908 so it could be from before the war.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Dating a Postcard
« on: Friday 17 August 18 16:33 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone date this postcard?
I think I read that the lines or lack of down the center of postcards help date them.
This one has faint T shaped lines at the top, I'm hoping will help date it.
I've added the front in case the layout helps as well.
Thank You.
