Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Handwriting in French on document.
« on: Friday 17 August 18 15:40 BST (UK)  »
Please, can anyone help with the handwriting on this.
I can sort of make sense of it but not enough to be sure.
In particular the address and dates are of interest.

I'm trying to make sense of my grandmother's movements.
I have her in Egypt in March 1900 (back of a photo) and the Hotel L'Oasis Luneville Meurthe et Moselle in 1903. Dublin 1904. At the moment we think she was in Paris for about four years before Egypt, I'm thinking this document is from when she returned from Egypt.
I think the occupation is likely to be Governess.

Also does anyone know if you had to register with the local police each time you entered a town/city in France.
Thank You.

Ireland / Worth watching.
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 22:49 BST (UK)  »
I only caught the end of this program on TG4, hopefully it will be on their player.
Anyone see it?

An Bhean A Shiúil Trasna Mheiriceá (OS & TS)

Mary Devine went to America, married, had two daughters. When her husband died she walked with the two girls from Mid West to New York sailed from there to Cobh and then walked home to Kerry.
How did she do it!
1901 using her maiden name living with eldest daughter

1911 using her married name
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Kerry/Dunurlin/Gortadoo/106295/

daughter doesn't say she was born in America, don't know why, need to see the program.

Oh good it's on the player.

Ireland / News about Irish Genealogy civil registers next update.
« on: Thursday 02 August 18 11:04 BST (UK)  »
Few more months to wait.
https://www.irishgenealogynews.com/2018/08/gros-online-civil-bmd-registers-latest.html

BTW I looked for an 1864 marriage from the index on Irish Genealogy and got no result on Family Search, so I don't think their transcript is complete yet.

The Lighter Side / The Caddy Cartoons
« on: Monday 02 July 18 21:23 BST (UK)  »
Read about this on Irish Genealogy News

Cartoons found in a Parish Register.

"Despite the names that we have been able to decipher, there is still a question mark over who drew these images, and also who was being depicted. If there are any budding graphologists or local historians who would like to take a guess, we would love to hear from you! "

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ancestry Updating Ethnicity Estimate
« on: Sunday 10 June 18 09:50 BST (UK)  »
I only noticed this yesterday.
My trace elements are being dropped
I started off with
Ireland, Scotland, Wales 76%
Great Britain 19%
Iberian 2%
Finland/North West Russia 2%
European Jewish 1%

some in the family were very pleased to see the Finland/North West Russia as we have cases of Dupuytren's Disease in the family

but now they are changing me to
Ireland /Scotland 98%
England / Wales 2%

I know as such it doesn't make any difference and I don't care one way or the other but it was handy to say 'Oh yes that's our Finnnish ancestors leaving their mark on my hand.' :D

Anyone else get updated?

Ireland / Registration District Map giving trouble
« on: Sunday 10 June 18 07:52 BST (UK)  »
S Wilson's brilliant Registration District Map is giving me a bit of bother.
https://www.swilson.info/regdistmap.php
Bring up a district and it shows the list of civil parishes in the district, then when you click on each parish name it gives you a  list of townlands and towns but that last part is not working, I'm not getting the townlands and towns.
I though it was just on the iPad so I changed to the laptop but it's still not working in firefox or explorer.
Anyone else have this problem?

Ireland / Gordon and Owen interchangable?
« on: Wednesday 02 May 18 16:22 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone got a case of the first name Gordon recorded as Owen?
I have two girls I believe are sisters Anne and Mary baptised (RC) in the same parish from the same townland father's surname matches mother's name matches, but one has father as Gordon (Anne) the other Owen (Mary).
Griffith's only gives one family of that surname in the townland but it appears the father was dead by then and only the mother appears.
If I have the correct girls Mary's father on her marriage (transcript) is Gordon, I still have to get her marriage civil cert it's not online yet. Anne married too early for a civil cert and parent's names are not on the church record. Neither girl is witness for the other.
