Anglesey / Overton Anglesey
« on: Wednesday 21 February 18 23:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have found records of a Martha Ailes Overton, bapt. 2 Jun 1814 on the in a Wesleyan Chapel on the Beaumaris Circuit.  Her parents are John Joseph Overton and Elinor.  John Joseph is listed as a sailor.

This Martha was I think the same Martha Overton who married Rowland Jones in 1834 in Bangor and this links in with family knowledge we have in a  number of ways.

There is also a record of a Martha Alice, 5 months old buried on 15 December 1813, but with no further details of parents.  These dates look too close for the girls to be sisters, but the similarity of the names I interesting.  Is there any way that there could be errors with these dates or some other explanation?

However, apart from these records, there don't seem to be any more for Overtons in Anglesey.

There is a marriage record for John Joseph Overton and Ellen Roberts on 3 September 1811.  This comes up on Findmypast within the "Faculty Office Marriage Licences" record set.  I am keen to understand how I could find out where this marriage may have occurred.  I can't find any other records from John Joseph in searches.  A later Census record I am pretty sure is for Elinor / Ellin notes that she was not born within Anglesey.

Can anyone help with any information on this record set and / or suggestions of next steps?

Many thanks for all your help,
KESTON.

Tyrone / Re: Hanna Lookup Request
« on: Thursday 04 January 18 09:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Steve,

The record you refer to sounds very much like my /William Stewart Hanna.  Was there any further information in the record, for example a birth date?

Based on some contacts I have had from others with Hanna links from Canada, I would assume that my Hannas from Tyrone were definitely linked with Hannas from elsewhere in Northern Ireland.

Many thanks for your help,
KESTON.

Hi,

Is there any online archive for New Brunswick newspapers in Canada and also those for Waterloo, Ontario.

I have seen the site for the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick  for New Brunswick papers but I am keen to understand if there are any other good online sources of newspapers for N Brunswick or Waterloo, Ontario.

Many thanks,
Keston.

Hello,

Can anyone please suggest where I could look to find information on the history of Anderton Mills in the Mawdesley area of Lancashire, and in particular which Andertons were originally responsible for building / owning it.

Many thanks for your help,

Antrim / Out of print books
« on: Tuesday 10 January 17 21:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am looking to get a copy of an out of print family history book:

Semple, Mary; Family History of the McDowells of Wigtonshire, Scotland, County Antrim, Ireland and Kent County, Ontario, Canada; 1927.

This was previously held by PRONI but I have just been advised by them that it is no longer in their library.

Can anyone help with suggestions for where I could get a copy.  The McDowells are a well researched family from Antrim, and previously Wigtonshire, Scotland with many who emigrated in the 18th century to the US and Canada.  There are many references to this book on the web but I have not been able to source an actual copy.

Many thanks,
KESTON RUXTON.

Cork / Cronin Ballyclogh or Mallow, Cork

 Cronin Ballyclogh

Hi,

I am looking to connect a Catherine Cronin,  b. 1818-1819 Mallow to family from the Mallow area, and quite possibly Ballyclogh.  Catherine emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1841.   Records we have of her are that she was the daughter of Jeremiah Cronin, a farmer and the closest information is that she was born in Mallow.

Looking at the Tithe Appointment books, there is a Jeremiah Cronin listed at Greenone, Kilroe in 1834.  Looking at baptism registrs for Ballyclogh which only start at 1822, there is a baptism record for a Daniel Cronin, son of Jeremiah Cronin and Margaret Leahy from Kanturk on 21 September 1822.  Sponsors for Daniel include Cath Leahy.

Names of Catherine's children in Victoria, Australia include Bridget, Margaret and Denis, all of which from wider searches appear to be names in use in th Ballyclogh parish for Cronins.

This is very much a search for a needle in a haystack I am aware, but I am keen to understand whether there are any other avenues (apart from DNA tests, which in my experience lead to links with other emigrant families, often from the US who come from a similar place) there are for trying to make a connection with anyone with knowledge of this family.

Many thanks any help or suggestions anyone can give,

KESTON.

Sorry, the quote should have been that his horse was shot under him at Balaclava.
