Family History Beginners Board / Re: Robert Charles Gilbert
« on: Thursday 18 August 11 14:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi: The Navy info for a Robert Gilbert in 1874-1875 is interesting  and looks promising .Would Mike please email or post the Navy record. If you are the same Mike that posted a relation to the Rosaline Love/Robert H. Gilbert branch of the family then I have sent you an email already so we can exchange info/photos etc.The date and place of birth of this individual (Limehouse 1848) matches RCG's birth info and relates to his fathers shipwright occupation. The occupation of "tailor" as Mike says is interesting but somehat strange. If this is the correct RCG then he starts off life as a tailor; then joins the Navy; then works as a musician (1879 marriage certificate);musican(1881 census) then a tailor 1891/1901 census) then late in life as a school custodian before his death in 1942.

Hello Spidermonkey

Thanks for the quick reply-very helpful. Too bad about Findmypast as that was the site I was going to switch to.I will see if the records office can look at the original and tell me what the occupation is-perhaps they can read the original better then the scanned version on the geneology sites.I dont find however the GRO to be very helpful-all they seem to want is and order for a certificate rather then answering a question.I have tried before without success.

I will be ordering the will and see what it will tells me.I expect however if he had a will that he left his estate to his daughter and son in England but maybe I will get lucky and see a name of a sibling mentioned.I have been in contact with a decendent of his daughter and although he has been very helpful providing photos and info they have not been able to trace Robert Charles Gilbert back any further (1879)then me so we are all stuck for the moment. What we need is a miracle or divine intervention. He has been one tough relative to trace and unfortunately for me the most important one and coming up againt unreadable census records (like 1871)hasnt helped.

Hi: Thanks to Daisy and Spider for your input. As you pointed out the Gilbert in Wicken suggestion, like so many others I have checked is not my ancestor.I have to believe whats on my great grandfathers marriage certificate of 1879 where it says his father is deceased.I have checked out all kinds of similar Gilbert items only to find they are still alive after 1879. Yes I saw the 1871 census entry before for Robert Gilbert and its a possibility this is my ancestor especially if the entry does in fact say musician or pianist. The record is so poor as you found that I wasnt able to come to a definite conclusion as to what the document said his occupation was.I am going to switch from the Ancestory site and subscribe to another site in hopes they will have a readable copy of the census page.If it does in fact make some reference to a musican occupation then this will be my ancestor and gets me back at least to 1871.Does anyone know if its possible to order a good photocopy of a census page from the records office? My ancestors marriage certificate wasnt witnessed by any Gilberts-just relatives on his wifes side of the family which I have done my research on.Your suggestion about finding his will is a good one-any suggestions on where I can find it?He died in 1942 Tonbridge,Kent and is buried in the local cemetary there.

Kent / Tunbridge Wells Businesses
« on: Saturday 13 August 11 13:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi: I am researching any businesses operating in Tunbridge Wells up to WW 1 for the purpose of preparing articles on each of them. This obviously is a lifelong project. It doesnt matter what type of business it was butcher, baker, candlestick maker-anything.My family is all from Tunbridge Wells and I am a historian.I have a special interest in Tunbridge Wells photographers and postcard publishers;carriage/automobile companies;fire department/firefighting as research on these professions is my specialty. If you have a family member from Tunbridge Wells who ran a business or worked in a business there I would greatly appreciate hearing from you and if you are looking for information on businesses and people of Tunbridge Wells perhaps I can help you....Smokey807

Hi: Thank you all for your interest in my topic and your replies. Your suggestions are all welcomed.Regarding the reply from "garstonite"-like you I have found many Gilberts in the Limehouse/Stepney area and even some Gilbert shipwrights but as you pointed out are they part of my family line-who knows. Its easy to jump to conclusions and go down the wrong path.To "rosiemagic"yes its a possibility but the problem with death indexes is that they do not give the persons occupation or names of family members and who can afford to keep purchasing death certificates in the off chance that the person is the one I am looking for.I dont know why Ancestory and the other sites dont give the full certificate information. To "crissane"thanks for taking the time for your search but like you I have found thousands of Robert(father) and Robert(son) combinations on Ancestory but unless one of the Robert fathers are a shipwright I dont know if I have the right family.I have spent hundreds of hours checking out some of the findings similar to the one you found only to discover that it led me down the wrong path.If I ignore the "shipwright"occupation the possibilities are endless.I agree with you however that just because information appears on a certificate or a census record it does not necessarily mean it is correct. We have all seen the discrepencies on census records-spelling of names, dates and places of birth etc.It all makes the task difficult.....Smokey807

Family History Beginners Board / Robert Charles Gilbert
« on: Saturday 13 August 11 00:55 BST (UK)  »
I have hit a dead end and could use some help. The oldest record I have of my great grandfather Robert Charles Gilbert is his marriage certificate of 1879 which gives his occupation as musician; his age which gives me a date of birth of 1849 etc but most importantly it gives me the only information I have on his father whos name is given as Robert; occupation-shipwright;and is listed as deceased. I am trying to find out who Robert Charles Gilberts  mother was and if he had any siblings.I have checked all the census records from 1841 onward and Robert Charles Gilbert does not appear until the 1881 census and for 1881 to 1901 his year and place of birth are given variously as 1848 or 1849 at either Stepney or Limehouse ,London,Middlesex.I have ordered birth certificates for him for the years 1845 right up to and including 1850 and the reply from the GRO is that they can find no birth certificate. They suggested his birth may not have been registered or he might have been registered as "male Gilbert".I have searched every census record for 1841 to 1871 for matches of a father Robert as a shipwright and a son Robert and found no matches.I have even tried without success to see if there are any records of shipwrights for Stepney or Limehouse cira 1820 hoping to locate his father.Has anyone got any ideas of what I can try next (apart from flying to England ).

Sussex / Re: Rock & Sons Hastings
« on: Thursday 11 August 11 00:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi: There is a website for the National Trust carriage museum at Arlington Court that has some good pictures and information on different carriage types and no doubt there are other similar sites that should answer your question.

Im doing some reasearch on Rock & Sons after they arrived in Tunbridge Wells in 1892 and became Rock,Hawkins & Thorpe although still given by that  name in the directories at White Rock,Hastings ; Grosvenor Rd Tunbridge Wells and 24 Baker St. London W. .Still operated by that name in 1903 but in the 1913 directory are Rock,Thorpe,Chatfield on Grosvenor Rd.In the 1922 directory the name is changed to Rock,Thorpe & Co. and later still Rock,Thorpe,Watson.

Does anyone have any information about the partners Chatfield and Watson and any photos they can share with me of the companies buiildings in Tunbridge Wells?
