Lancashire / illegible mothers name on birth certificate
« on: Friday 09 February 18 03:35 GMT (UK)  »
I have a birth cert for Mary Ann Connell Liverpool 1849 J 20 330. Father was John Connell.
Mary Ann was born 21/4/1849 at 58 Gascoyne St. Liverpool with mother Mary Connell formerly xxxxxx? The mothers name is something like Curree or Currie, whereas I had expected it to be Dempsy or Connors.
Is there any way of tracking down the mother's name? Presumably the GRO certificate is a copy of an entry - is it possible to get a view of the original entry for instance?
Would appreciate any ideas

I think Catherine power died in Greenwich Union infirmary on 29 Aug 1891. I am trying to find when she was admitted but can't find how to access Ancestry (or any other site) Greenwich workhouse records and admissions and discharges for 1891. Can anyone help me to do that? I am an Ancestry subscriber.

London and Middlesex / Jeremiah O’Connell and duplicate workhouse records
« on: Tuesday 21 November 17 04:38 GMT (UK)  »
Catherine Power born abt 1846 in Dublin had two children born Liverpool Thomas abt 1867 and Mary abt 1870. The children's birth dates are estimated from 1881 census in Hackney London where she was living with those children (both named O'Connell) and supposedly married to Jeremiah O'Connell There seems to be no record of her marriage to J O'C and I can't find the children's  births in Liverpool under either O'Connell or Power name.
I'm wondering whether Power was her maiden name or whether she was previously married to a Power. The only record I have with that name is from the birth of a son (also called Jeremiah) with Jeremiah O'Connell in Feb 1878 where mother's name was Power.
Would appreciate any help in untangling a likely history

Somerset / Mary Ann Hunt b. abt 1800
« on: Friday 03 November 17 02:48 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to establish birth record for Mary Ann Hunt born around 1800.
She married Edmund Hunt (same surname) 5 June 1819 in Bawdrip (both of that parish) with consent of parents (so she must have been under age - under 21? because he was already 25). They had son George 12 Dec 1819 born in Bawdrip.
I can't find a birth record for her.
I think, but haven't confirmed, that they must have moved to Weston Zoyland and had 3 more children
Edmund 1821, Alfred 1824 and Eliza 1827
My concern is the mother's name was Mary not Mary Ann for the three latter births so can't be sure,  but can't find marriage for another Edmund and Mary in the area.
Any help would be appreciated

Merionethshire / William Williams death in Aberllefari Slate Quarry abt. 1895
« on: Saturday 30 July 16 19:54 BST (UK)  »
Searching for birth & death details of William Williams (WW) killed abt. 1895 age abt. 22.
Family story is that Elizabeth Lloyd was pregnant when WW died (family not certain they were married) and named their son William Lloyd Williams (WLW) who died aged 67 in 1862 (hence est. birth year 1895). She lived for a while at Braichgoch farm near Corris
Elizabeth subsequently married Thomas Hughes when WLW was 6 or 7.
There are many William Williams in Merionethshire and help would be appreciated to identify the right one and hence to find his family of origin. In particular is there a source for quarry deaths that might provide more personal details of WW?

Somerset / The Hunt family in Western Zoyland
« on: Thursday 23 June 16 17:47 BST (UK)  »
I've found my Gt Grandfather Alfred Hunt baptised 1828 at St Mary's Church Western Zoyland Somerset. He married Emma Coles in 1852 . His father was Edmund Hunt (on the marriage cert) and mother a "Mary". Try as I might I can't find any other records of Edmund and Mary Hunt and wonder if anyone has earlier information about this family
Would appreciate any help

It seems as if there was a tradition to use grandparents first names for the first born children in a family. So if the paternal grandparents were David X and Mary X, David and Mary would be used for the first born son and daughter respectively.
I'm wondering how good an indication this would be to use in constructing a family search?
I have a Henry Jones (b.abt 1810) with first two children David and Mary - his father is David Jones (for sure) but the only certain record for a wife is for an Elizabeth (age 55-60) at the 1841 census. There is no certainty about Elizabeth being Henry's mother.
I'm wondering if Henry's use of Mary could indicate that was his birth mother's name and that his father had a second marriage to Elizabeth. That could change my thinking about the family
If I'm correct about the tradition what was the practice about using maternal grandparents names?

Carmarthenshire / Births in Llannon
« on: Saturday 14 November 15 05:14 GMT (UK)  »
I can't find birth records for the early children of Henry and Mary Jones all born in Llannon according to census returns
David 1827, Mary 1830, John 1832, Ann 1833/4, William 1837
The later children are all recorded:-
Daniel 1840, Eleazer 1842  Thomas 1845, and Elizabeth 1851.
there must be a reason for this - availability of parish records?
Any ideas on how I can get hold of these?

Carmarthenshire / Henry Jones baptism in Llanartheny about 1810
« on: Tuesday 08 September 15 03:28 BST (UK)  »
I'm concluding this baptismal record doesn't exist and hence I should give up searching for it!
I just want to check someone doesn't have info that would encourage me to keep trying because I want to get back to his father's (David Jones) generation and getting Henry' baptismal info seems the only way to do that.
I got help from "osprey" a couple of years ago tracing the marriage of Henry to Ann Davies dec qtr 1873 llanelly vol 11a pg 1346. I got the certificate which showed his father was David Jones, farmer, deceased. henry is in 41,51,61,71,81,91 censuses with ages suggesting he was born in 1810 +- 2 yrs and always in Llanartheny. I followed "osprey's" suggestion  to look through parish records and can see on FreeBMD that Parish baptismal records for the period 1740 to 1862 have been transcribed but on searching can find no reference to henry jones.
There is a family (head David Jones) in llanartheny in the 41,51,61 censuses with David about the right age to have fathered Henry and that is the only David Jones family to appear in those censuses as I look through all the dwellings in llanartheny but there seems no way to confirm the connection.
Does anyone have family history which traces this line or does anyone have a thought on what I may have missed in trying to trace the baptism. Help would be much appreciated.
