Apart from the ground officer/land steward's house, formerly occupied by the Gunns, and which passed out of my family two days ago, there were no other dwellings on Lerinbeg in the late 19th century, so in respect of any croft house "Lerin" inevitably meant Lerinmore.

Alas, it appears that fotki has become a subscription only dating site, so I cannot send a message via there.

For legal reasons I cannotTo message Mr. Don on LinkedIn I require to sign up to Premium. For legal reasons I am not permitted to disclose my employment on any public forum, so subscribing to a premium system to send one message could cause me certain difficulties  :(

Sutherland / County Sutherland Burial Records
« on: Saturday 10 June 23 22:28 BST (UK)  »
This topic came up a few years ago, but might benefit from a re-visit.

As we know, the late Christine Stokes and the late Angi Lamb photographed and transcribed the burial records of cemeteries all across Sutherland a decade or so ago. Following their respective deaths the website containing the pictures and transcripts was taken down a couple of years ago.

On a recent visit to Balnakeil I met some biology students who are using the graves for research into lichen activity on stone. The combination of lichen and further weathering has made some of the gravestones that were legible a decade ago nearly impossible to read; in another twenty years many of the horizontal sandstone markers will be utterly illegible. Re-doing the work completed before will perhaps salvage 90-95% of the old data now, but each year will see more inscriptions lost forever. My great-grandfather's stone for one is deteriorating rapidly and might survive twenty years at best

Is anyone here in touch with the families of the two ladies and able to access the old pictures and transcripts for re-posting?

More information would be helpful here.

Where and when did the marriages take place?

Do you have information regarding the bithplaces of any of these people? When did they die? Have you looked for all possible death entries?

Mary Ann Devine is likely to have been Roman Catholic, so divorce in the 19th century seems somewhat unlikely. It's certainly plausible that the two Roberts were cousins, so I suggest you need to focus on marriages (and be aware of the old Scots irregular marriages as well).

1939 Register of E & W has Leonard born on 3rd June 1881, so one or other is a year out.

Will check out Frederick, thanks.

Leonard was born in 1881, so would be around 69 years old in 1950 - looks like this is not *my* Leonard.

I suspect from other information that the Charles I'm looking for died in childhood. There was definitely one of the eight children of Jonas and Clara on the 1911 Census dead by the 1911 census where the family reports seven surviving children out of eleven. The missing name is Charles.

Thanks for that.

I'm struggling with FreeBMD but have located Leonard at the correct expected address in 1939. That looks like a good match for Mabel, who as far as I know wasn't married.

No, I deliberately didn't mention Jonas and Clara as I have their details and am specifically seeking information only in respect of their children

Nothing seems to come up on the surnames board for Smart in Hertfordshire.
