Thanks Findem,I'll keep that in mind. I've already had a reply from Reverend Bond saying thank you for thanking him and good luck with my research. I think that was very nice of him.

Durham Lookup Requests / Re: Jane Martin or Markham
« on: Friday 16 February 07 15:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi again Paul, thanks for the 2 Jane Martins you found. Sunderland was classed as Durham then I think, so one may be her, if her name was Martin, not Markham. As you said, ages were rounded up or down for census returns so I can't be sure of her year of birth.
It's a good idea to ask someone to look her up in Durham County records,as I'm not able to get there myseslf at present.
Thanks again for your help.

Durham Lookup Requests / Re: Jane Martin or Markham
« on: Friday 16 February 07 10:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Paul, thank you for your reply. I have a copy of the birth certificate of my gt grandmother Ruth Oxley b1851,her birth was registered by her mother, who is on the certificate as Jane Markham.I contacted the transcriber of it,on the BMD web site and he said that Martin must have been misheard as Markham, as Martin was the name on the transcribing list. Jane was illiterate, she signed with a X so she'd not have known the name had been written wrongly. He said there is no Jane Markham.Yet surely whoever wrote out the original certificate would have checked her maiden  surname by saying it back to her ?
Unfortunately I don't have the finances to send for certificates, especially as it might not be the right one.On the census returns,Jane is just shown as born Durham, so I don't even know whereabouts.
I was hoping someone reseraching the same family history may be able to help.

Durham Lookup Requests / Jane Martin or Markham
« on: Thursday 15 February 07 18:20 GMT (UK)  »
My gt gt grandmother who I had always known as Jane Markham, married Thomas Oxley 1839  at Durham, but is transcribed as Jane Martin on the BMD site.On the census returns she is just shown as born at Durham around 1818,so  too early for a birth certificate. Can anyone suggest how I can find out more about her please ? Is anyone researching this family too ?
Thank you
