Lanarkshire / Re: Missing Jane Buchanan & James Brownlie both born Cambusnethan
« on: Thursday 21 February 19 18:12 GMT (UK)  »
Many thanks for your response, the information I have is as follows;
Jane Buchanan was born in 1889 in Cambusnethan and her parents were, Andrew Buchanan born 1847 in Fintry and Jane Buchanan( McCallum) born 1859 again in Cambusnethan. They married 29th November 1878.

Unfortunately Andrew died 20th January 1890 and Jane (McCallum) Buchanan remarried shortly thereafter.

Her second husband was James Brownlie, sometimes known as Docherty.  Difficulty tracking him down as appears to be something of a mystery man. This second marriage produced a further four children the oldest of whom is my missing James Brownlie. He was born in 1892 in Cambusnethan. As both he and Jane Buchanan disappeared from view between 1901 and 1911 I think they may have moved on together given there is only an age gap of three years. As I said the possible Jamaica connection has totally thrown me, I was expecting Canada/Australia or USA, but this Jamaica, especial mention , over 30 years ago from an elderly, now deceased relative, of Kingston is a total surprise. The elderly relative did not tell me this but a cousin of mine who lives in another country, not Jamaica, but Canada. Once again many thanks for any advice

Lanarkshire / Missing Jane Buchanan & James Brownlie both born Cambusnethan
« on: Wednesday 20 February 19 18:46 GMT (UK)  »
A family member has informed me of the possibility that both of the above, half sister and half brother may have emigrated to Jamaica between 1901 and 1911. This was relayed to her by a deceased family member who mentioned, in later life, that he could possibly have relations in Kingston, Jamaica. As I have been concentrating on Canada/Australia records this has come as a major surprise.Any pointers out there as to the best starting point with this search? Do I start with America? Then track onwards. Would not be surprised if Jane went into service and James on to some kind of land work. As usual any info greatly appreciated.

I have a feeling that both Jane Buchanan born 1889 in Cambusnethan and her half brother James Brownlie, born 1892, again in Cambusnethan both emigrated, possibly to Australia, between 1901 and 1911. I have tried every avenue e.g. marriage/census/death here, with no result. How do I best pursue my hunch re Australia? As usual your experience is greatly appreciated. Nearly there with the descendants of their Mother, also called, Jane.

Found Andrew Buchanan born Fintry 1879. He is on Census of 1911 as living in Bellshill, Lanarkshire. He married Janet McLennan of Carluke, Lanarkshire in 1906 and by 1911 had two sons Andrew aged 6 and John aged 2. He died in 1947. It is also possible they had a daughter, Jane born 1915. The same names are repeated throughout the family. Still no luck with his sister, also Jane, born 1889 in Cambusnethan. She appears on 1901 Census in Cambusnethan but not on 1911. I have tried marriage records and census records for whole of Scotland but too many possibilities. She possibly went into service as her Mother had done before her. I'll keep plodding on. Of the nine children Jane Buchanan/Brownlie/Docherty had I have managed to track down six, so still a way to go.

Thanks for that but I must be missing 1891 entry for him.Is it census? I am also having a problem with his sister. JAne born 1889, again Fintry, but she moved to Cambusnethan when her mother remarried in 1890. Jane appears on 1901 census but not on 1911. In the meantime I'll return to Andrew jnr. I am trying to fill in all the blanks re Jane senior's 9 children. I have completed 5 of them Trying to complete missing two with Andrew Buchanan Senior then I'll move on to missing two with her second husband. Paper and pens everywhere! Many thanks for your help. Jane Buchanan/Brownlie/Docherty has turned into something of a heroine of mine.

Lanarkshire / Andrew Buchanan born Fintry 1879

Another brick wall! Andrew Buchanan was born in 1879 to Andrew Buchanan and Jane McCallum. He appears on 1881 census but not on 1891. No death notified during that ten years and surely he would have been too young to emigrate.  Any ideas would, as usual, be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks once again, Monica, for the further info as well as a possible reason for the use of two names. I shall keep going with the search.

After a lot of rooting around, I have come up the marriage certificate of Jane. Although the spelling of her surname is given as McCallion all other details check out. i.e.age, parents names, the fact that she is a widow. The groom,s name is noted as Jas. Docherty, widower. Both are living at 7 Quarry Row Cambusnethen. The first clue as to why Jas. may have changed his name to Brownlie is that his mother's maiden name is Brownlie. On the 1891 census both James now calling himself Brownlie, and Jane are living at 333 Craigneuk.4th Ward, Wishaw. with Jane's 5 children with Andrew Buchanan.. By 1901 James & Jane had James, born 1892, Annie born, 1896. One daughter was stillborn in 1894, another Mabel Florence died aged at 3 years . There seems to be some switching between the names of Docherty & Brownlie. Another of these little mysteries!
