So good to know that Brandon High School was held in such esteem. I believe the secret to such success was in the discipline. From the headmaster, nicknamed " Wee Bud" aka Mr A McNeil to the Headmistress " Rubberneck"  aka Miss Graham. Nothing went unnoticed from an incorrect tie to a skirt which might be a centimetre too  short even for the" swinging sixties".

At the end of our time there i.e. 4 years dependent on results, we were offered choices, leave education or move to another "High School". "I chose to leave and spent most of my working life in banking. Fairly successfully.
Hopefully "Bud" and " Rubberneck" would be so proud of the productive people who were enabled to live a confident life

Once again "lodger" has the answer!. Until this was brought to my attention, the Brandon Factor never crossed my mind. Despite "Brandon street, Brandon Church, Brandon High School and not forgetting the Brandon Bar!!!!!!!!!!

Any other ex pupils of Brandon High School out there? Such a happy school, despite the feeling that we were second best to the "other High School" everyone in the classes took great pride in the Brandon factor.

Many thanks for your information and your understanding pm. This meant so much to my late Father and who knows we may well meet at The Heritage Centre. I have already called on their assistance and have been met on each occasion with such kindness. I shall return to my research within the next few weeks. Keep plodding on and digging deeper!

Lud,

You are a wonder! And very Brave. I thought I was going to going up on my B"""""Hind yesterday. My Cousin returned from Canada last year and we were all over Airbles looking for the Buchanan lair and now I know exactly where to look.
My cousin, aged 70, is very proud of the fact that he is almost, apart from his own son,  the last of the Buchanans! as far as we know. We are almost a totally female tribe. I hope that does not make us totally scary although from my research I have found some very strong women in my history.  PM

Thanks again and when the daffodils rise so will I to E 220.  PM

Well done once again Lud. Such a fount of knowledge also welcome to a new member all the way from Chicago .

You will find that everyone on this site is very helpful and only looking for their history.

By the way, even though I only live minutes from Airbles Cemetery I will not, for a few days at least, be venturing there. I value my limbs too much and I am too old to take up Skiing.

Best of luck with your research.

Hi to all, I have been off the site for a little time, family commitments, so good to be back.

James Strachan (born 1883) and David Robert Stephen born ( 1891) were uncle and nephew.  David's mother Margaret Stephen ( nee Strachan) and James were brother and sister. David was my great uncle ( a bit of a family hero) so that would make James Strachan my great, great uncle.
David Robert belonged to 44th Bn., Australian Infantry and by the time of his death on 28th March 1918 he had risen to the rank of Lieutenant and  been awarded the Military Cross. He is buried in Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, France.

The citation for the award sent to his parents in December 1918 ( well after his death) reads:

Lieutenant David Robert Stephen MC

" for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. While in command of a patrol, he encountered two large parties of the enemy. He attacked each party in turn captured some prisoners and dispersed the remainder, without any casualties among his own men. He set a splendid example of courage and initiative"

As I said a family hero and my late mother remembered the medal taking pride of place on her grandparents mantelpiece. Don't where it went when they died. Wish I did.
