Glamorganshire / Re: Mary Matilda EVANS (possibly PERRETT) Found!
« on: Saturday 06 March 10 18:15 GMT (UK)  »
Found Mary Matilda in 1911 courtesy of the baptisms of her children in 1922.
Mary Matilda married again in 1911 to William Joseph Perkins.  She was with William and his family at 12 Mary St Mountain Ash. Daughter Annie was 2 and a PERRETT though baptised as PERKINS in 1922 alongwith 2 half-siblings, Raymond Donald and Violet Irene.

Just recieved Mary Matilda's marriage certificate.  It confirms that her father was Isaac Evans, however he was deceased in 1908 hence no where on the 1911 census.  Mary Matilda was living at 17 lower forest level at the time of her marriage 919 July 1908), which was her mother's home before marriage and where her grandmother was in 1901 and her Uncle Charles in 1911.  I suspect that Annie her mother had also died and that the children had been taken in by Annie's siblings.
Still doesn't help where Mary Matilda is in 1911 though.

1911 - RG14PN32286 RG78PN1851 RD589 SD2 ED40 SN138

1891 - RG12 piece 4416 folio 105 page 18 The birth places are well mixed up on this census.  William senior was actually born Abbeydore Herefordshire, Eliza senior Trecastle, Brecon, William, Margaret both born in Worcester, and Gwendolyn in Mountain Ash.

1881 - RG11 piece 5295 folio 148 page 29  Again birth places are mixed up.  All the children excet Gwen were born in Worcester.

In 1891 Isaac and Annie Evans were at 19 Lower Forest Level Mountain Ash (next door to Annie's family Hughes).  Mary Matilda was 1.  The ref is RG12 piece 4416 folio 106 page 19.  It says Annie was born in Mountain Ash but she was actually born in Worcester.
Isaac and Annie were married 24 Dec 1888 in Mountain Ash.

In 1901 they are at 8 Halswell St ref RG13 piece 5004 folio 129 page 18.  Mary's birthdate year is 1889 (not sure why I had down 1891).

Glamorganshire / Mary Matilda EVANS (possibly PERRETT)

Mary Matilda EVANS was born about 1891, daughter of Isaac EVANS and Annie (nee HUGHES).  In 1891 the family were at 19 Lower Forest Level Mountain Ash and in 1901  at 8 Halswell St Penrhiwceiber.
I think Mary Matilda married George PERRETT in 1908 though I haven't got the certificate to prove this.

I cannot find her anywhere in the 1911 census nor on any ship's list leaving the UK.  Her older brother Evan EVANS is lodging with his Aunt (my great grandmother) at 7 Upper Forest Level in 1911, and her youngest sister Amelia is a nurse with a Jones family at Aberffrwd Cottage Mountain Ash.  There is no sign of the parents.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Glamorganshire / William James HUGHES Mountain Ash 1891 & 1911. Where 1901?
« on: Saturday 27 February 10 15:16 GMT (UK)  »
William James HUGHES (my great great Uncle) was the oldest child of William HUGHES and Eliza (nee NICHOLAS), born in Worcester Oct 1861.  The family returned to Mountain Ash by 1876 when the youngest child, Gwenllian, was born.
In 1881 and 1891 the family is at 17 Lower Forest Level along with William James who is a coal miner.
In 1911 William is lodging with his youngest sister Gwenllian who has married William CARPENTER at 13 Lower Forest Level.
According to the 1911 census William has been married for 10 years though there is no sign of his wife.
I have searched all sorts of variations for William in the 1901.  Looking for his marriage with no idea of his wife's name is problematic with so many William Hughes.
Any ideas would be welcome.

Picking back up with my Tolhurst family having been researching other lines for a few years. My 4t great grandfather was James Tolhurst born 1771 who married Mary Fletcher 28 April 1796 in Battle.  After the marriage they moved to Ore where 12 children were born all listed in the family bible of son Stephen:
Elizabeth born 2 August 1797 married Henry Lavender 12 April 1819 at Guestling, died 23 Dec 1849.
Jane born 30 Nov 1799 married John Cloke 25 Aug 1823 at Westfield after having his first child John in 1822, died before 1881.
Ann born 7 Oct 1801 married Joseph Deeprose 4 May 1823 at Hollington, died 1833.
James born 3 March 1803 married Mary Hommard 30 Dec 1826 at Icklesham, died 25 June 1873.
Thomas born 30 April 1804 married Sarah Milham 7 June 1842, died 14 Feb 1890.
Mary born 7 March 1806
Sarah born 11 Feb 1808 married David Deeprose 16 June 1833 St Marys Hastings, died 1881.
Stephen born 8 Oct 1809 married Susannah Osborn 11 July 1831 at Ore , died 19 Nov 1880.
Hannah born 11 Oct 1811, had 4 illegitimate children, died 1855.
Charlotte born 9 Oct 1815
Harriet born 10 March 1817 married Jabez Smith 7 Feb 1837 at Ore
Phillia born 17 Sept 1819 died 1834.
I have followed most of these families down through the censuses.
James the father died 28 Feb 1859 in Battle Union House. Mary his wife died 1827.

James was the son of James and Ann (Philcox), with siblings:
Ann born 1765 who married Zebulon Swaine 11 July 1787 St Clements Hastlings.
Sarah born 1767 married William White 14 May 1787 All Saints Hastings
John born 1769 married Ann polhill 2 Feb 1790 Westfield
Thomas born 1773 married Martha Morris 18 July 1798 St Clements Hastings and then Lucy Boulton.

Stephen born 1809 is my ancestor.

I need to have a good sort through all my notes but happy to link up and share with anyone  researching this family.

Sarah Tolhurst wife of William White is my 4th great Aunt.  Some years ago I and another descendant of Sarah's brother James spent a lot of time on the family.
The transcript I have of William's will  refers to William as a yeoman of Ore.  He left £5 to William White, Stephen White, James White, Robert White, George White, Sarah the wife of Richard Sheldon, Ann the wife of John Boys, and Barbara the wife of Charles Baker; to be paid 6 months after his death.  All his messuages, lands, tenements, hereditaments and real estate whatsoever and wheresoever was left to sons in law Richard Sheldon and Charles Baker tenants in common.
the will was made 24 Jan 1837 and proved 2 Feb 1838, the value being no more than £300.
