Sussex Lookup Requests / 1851 look up James Lamper
« on: Wednesday 25 January 06 18:22 GMT (UK)  »
I have found James Lamper in every other census so I wonder if anyone can track him down on the 1851 census.

He was born in Shoreham/Sompting in 1847. In 1851 his father James was living in Sompting Street Sompting. His wife died in 1849 and he had 5 children living with him but James is missing. In 1861 James is lodging with John and Deborah Lock and another James Lamper.

He does not seem to have lived with his father at all so I would really like to know what happened to him in 1851.

Thanks Thelma

Sussex Lookup Requests / Lamper birth/baptism
« on: Tuesday 17 January 06 19:27 GMT (UK)  »
I do not know if this is possible but heres hoping.
I would like to find the father of Frank Lamper born c1892 Brighton, Florence born c1894 Southwick and Margaret born c1896 Brighton. In the 1901 census they are living with their widowed mother Alice b1868 Brighton. If I can identify their father that may help with another query about the Lamper family which is really puzzling me.
Thanks

Sussex / Lamper/Trangmar(er) problems again
« on: Saturday 07 January 06 14:54 GMT (UK)  »
Here I am again! My great grandparents are causing me all sorts of problems. I have asked for help before with Hannah/Anne/Annie Trangmar because the 1881 census shows James lamper with his wife Ann(e) born Fareham-Sussex and his children. I think the conclusion was that the Fareham bit was a mistake and it should be Patcham. In 1891 census the wife was called hannah, also in1901.

I couldn't decide whether the wives were actually the same person. I have the birth cert for Albert born 1882 and his mother is given as Hannah Trangmar. I have now received the cert for Annie margaret born 1875 and her mother is given as Annie Trangmar. Would they have used different versions of the same name on birth certs? It is still possible that Annie and Hannah are different people as I have found details of two separate people who could both fit.

Obviously if I could get their marriage certs it would solve it, but I can still find no trace of any marriage using all the name variants that I can think of. I have trawled through 1837 online using James Lamper from 1865-1881, free Bmd, family history online and Family search.

I have thought of another possibility! In 1871 James was on board a schooner in Alderney. I wasn't totally convinced that it was him becuase he spent most of his life working on the railways but on the latest birth cert his occupation was given as Seaman merchant service so that ties in. He was said to be unmarried in 1871 but his oldest son Alfred H was born c1869 in London. I cannot find his birth details either but there was an Alfred Trangmar born Strand Sept 1867. Does anyone think that this could be him before I try send for his cert?

Could James and Annie have married at sea. I have looked on 1837 online but nothing there. I have found out a little about the schooner it was registered at Whitstable and was sold to Guernsey.

I really would like to esablish exactly who my great grandmother was -She was the Hannah. So can anybody think of what else I can do to confirm her identity ?

Thanks to everyone who has helped me so far. It seems odd to be stuck on this relatively recent set of people. Please help.

On the 1861 census Ann(e) Lamper's place of birth is given as Fareham Sussex. Is/was there such a place or should it be Hampshire? Many thanks.Theli P

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / marriage Lamper at Fareham
« on: Saturday 19 November 05 22:19 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone find the marriage of James Lamper born 1847 Shoreham Sussex to Ann(e) unknown who was born in Fareham in 1845? I guess the marriage took place at Fareham but have no proof.

I think they had a child Alfred in 1869 in Middlesex which is a bit of a mystery but I assume that they married around that time. In 1871 there was a James Lamper on board ship in Alderney. I think that was my James although there was another one around at that time.

James later returned to Sussex and married Hannah Trangmer but I do not have their marriage date either. Any help however vague would be gratefully received.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Marriage look up LAMPER
« on: Wednesday 16 November 05 18:26 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone find the marriage of James Lamper born 1847 and Hannah born in Patcham in 1847. Their son Albert was born on 4th July 1882 in Brighton and I have a copy of his birth cert but cannot understand Hannah's maiden name. It looks like Tranginar! So if I could find out when they were married or the names of other children I may be able to solve this.

This appears to be a second marriage for James. On 1881 census his wife's name is given as Ann. I cannot find them in 1891 but by 1901 he was living with Hannah in Brighton. Oh I have just realised that there is a daughter Hannah born 1885 so that may help.
many thanks.

Somerset Lookup Requests / Collier birth/baptism
« on: Saturday 05 November 05 16:44 GMT (UK)  »
Further to my earlier question about the Colliers I now have a bit more information. Robert Collier married Hannah Oborn on 18th Apr 1814 in Frome. It was witnessed by Aaron Button who later married Hannah when she was widowed.

Can anyone find any births/baptisms for their children between 1814 and 1821?
I am specifically looking for Eliza, Betsey or Elizabeth. Hmm all very similar I know that is why I need help. I still wonder if Aaron took on one of Hannah's children so she called herself Button although she was a Collier.
 Thanks Theli p

Somerset Lookup Requests / Collier family Frome
« on: Friday 04 November 05 19:33 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to unravel some information  which I have recently found out based on some info given on this site.

I originally enquired about Elizabeth Button and was trying to find out her birth/baptism c 1821 Frome.

In the 1841 census for Frome she was a burler living with her father Aaron Button born c1781 and his second wife Hannah (Collier) born c1786. They married in 1827 so I assumed that Hannah was not Elizabeth's mother.

Also in the 1841 census for Frome was Aaron Button born1805. This was the first Aaron's son. His wife was Eliza (Collier) born c1815. This was his second wife. They were living with the first wife's 3 children and Betsy Collier ( a silkworker)born c1820.

I would like to establish the relationship between the Colliers-Hannah, Elizabeth and Betsy. I am guessing that they are mother and daughters. So if anyone can find out anything about them I would be very grateful.

I am still puzzled about Elixzabeth button because she was born more than 10 years after her siblings so I am now wondering if she was a Button at all but was in fact Hannah Collier's daughter also known as Betsey and was recorded twice on the 1841 census as she moved between her parents house and that of her sister. Her father is given as Aaron Button on her marriege cert but perhaps he was her step father. Would any of this be possible?

Please help! I seem to be going round in circles with this.
Thanks Theli P
