Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / A date for two miners
« on: Sunday 10 May 15 14:56 BST (UK)  »
Good Afternoon all,

In a photograph that can be found linked below, it shows my Great Great Grandfather stood left and another man seated. My G-G Grandfather was a miner, and is described in around 1900 as a Coal Miner Hewer and later as a Coal Miner drawing chock under ground. I was wondering if someone could date this photograph based on the clothing style etc. I am unsure what to age my G-G Grandfather in this photograph, but he 31 at the turn of the century and he looks to be a bit older than that.

Thanks in advanced for any help,
regards,
K

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1674 Birth Registration
« on: Monday 03 March 14 23:38 GMT (UK)  »
Let me begin by apologising for posting a second of such threads not so long after another, when one delves into the history of ones family in the 18th and 17ths century it is easy to come across handwriting that is difficult and/or challenging to read.

Below is a Birth Record from March 1674 in Jedburgh, Roxburgh, pertaining to an Agnes, born to a William Scougall. Listed below the birth of William's child is the birth of a child to a George Scougall. I am looking for help in reading both of these records as I am having great trouble in doing so.

Note: The image has been edited with an increased contrast in order to make the letters more visible in what was otherwise a fading script. I hope someone can help me understand the writing as presently I can't even make out Agnes' name. Just William and George.

Thank you very much,
I appreciate any help.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1720 Scottish Death Record
« on: Sunday 02 March 14 18:03 GMT (UK)  »
I am having trouble reading this Scottish Death Record from Edinburgh in 1720--dated February 18th of that year. I was wondering if anyone could help. The chap in question is a William Scougall and can be found 12 lines down in the attached image. I am only looking for help translating the line of text pertaining to him. So far I can read:

"Wm Scougall wright..."

and that is pretty much it. Any and all help is greatly appreciated as I am trying to use this record in a quest to help me found out when this chap was born.

And as an attachment I have included a close-up.

thanks a lot,
Keiren

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Two Birth Registrations
« on: Sunday 29 September 13 16:38 BST (UK)  »
I have two birth registrations here. One of them (I'm not sure which) pertains to my ancestor, the other is not. I cannot fully read the passages in which they are mentioned, so I was hoping someone on here may be able to help me.

Attached to this post are the two images. I'm not sure which entry is the correct one on the 2nd image, but on the first image it is right at the top.

Name of entry:  William Scougale/Scowgall/Scougal/Scougall
Year: 1683
Type: Parish Birth registry

I'd appreciate any help deciphering these passages.

warmest,
Keiren

Completed Yorkshire (North Riding) Look up Requests / Wilson Lookup
« on: Wednesday 27 March 13 16:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there,

I'm wondering if someone could look-up a birth record for an Evelyn Wilson born 12th October 1920 in Easington, North Yorkshire, now part of Redcar & Cleveland, near Loftus. Her true birth father isn't known although it is believed her mother was called as a nickname "Eva" and possibly not 100% may be Evelyn May for the mother.

Thank you very much, there is any more information you need to find her I can try and help.

Midlothian / Kirk Records
« on: Sunday 17 March 13 22:10 GMT (UK)  »
I was wondering if anyone with access to the National Archive of Scotland could help me with accessing the Kirk records in Midlothian around the Borthwick area. I live quite a way from Edinburgh and so cannot make a trip myself.

I am looking to find any records about illegitimate children or to do with having a child unmarried, regarding a Ms. Jean/Jane Scougall/Scougale/Scougal/Scowgale , born  Approx. 17 Nov 1772.  The Child would have been born between 1810 and 1820.

Thank you very much.
