World War One / Prisoner of war
« on: Sunday 18 August 13 22:20 BST (UK)  »
My grandfathers cousin, who moved to Canada in 1905, joined up in 1914 in Canada. I think, from a remark made on a postcard by his sister, that he may have been a prisoner in Germany. I have seen his attestation papers on the Canadian Archives site, and a scrawled note seems to say - Batt. 15 Coy E.
Would any records of his service be in Canada? (I am in U.K.) Any guidance gratefully received.

The Common Room / Apprentice printer compositor
« on: Friday 31 May 13 23:10 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out a little more about a recently discovered relative, who died young in 1887. He appeared in the 1881 census as a printer compositor, aged 19, boarding with a "master printer", presumably working for him. I am wondering if he would have had to be formally apprenticed, although the master printer appears in 1871 as a news agent. On his death certificate he is Journeyman printer, and the informant is another printer compositor. The young man in question is John Pay, born 1862, and living in Ramsgate.
Also the address where he died is I think 1 Camden Road, which in 1891 is the M U O F Club. I wonder if this is something to do with Oddfellows?
