The Common Room / Help to read a name please
« on: Thursday 02 December 21 21:06 GMT (UK)  »
I would like the first name in this clip to be John Craft, but I can't quite convince myself. The other names are for comparison, but probably not much help.

The Common Room / Chest tomb query
« on: Wednesday 17 November 21 23:15 GMT (UK)  »
In a graveyard near here is a chest tomb with the names of an entire large family engraved on it, father, mother and 10 children, who all died in the first half of the 1800s. It occurred to me recently to wonder where they were actually buried. A printed list of the churchyard memorials calls it an altar tomb enclosed with iron railings. The railings are now gone, but I cannot imagine that they surrounded an area large enough for all those graves. Any thoughts please?

The Lighter Side / Some long-lived ancestors
« on: Wednesday 27 October 21 19:17 BST (UK)  »
Being at a loss for a project recently, I went back to some of my early research done with Bishops Transcripts in the Cathedral Archives. I was mainly adding dates of burial, and found that in several entries, the parson added the person's age, presumably because it was unusual. The oldest was in 1769, and he died aged 93. Several others died in the early to mid 1800s, aged between 83 and 89, 3 men and 2 women. They were probably all agricultural workers, living in tiny villages in the North Downs.
It was very useful in confirming years of birth so I knew I had the right people. There are altogether too many Atwoods in some of these places!

Kent / Problem with Findmypast Kent records
« on: Thursday 21 October 21 21:31 BST (UK)  »
Not a big problem, just a niggle. When I search baptisms, including variants for both forename and surname, the list always includes 5 blank entries for Ash-next-Ridley. Is there a simple fix for this please?

Kent / Blackborne Hundred Hearth Tax
« on: Thursday 30 September 21 21:29 BST (UK)  »
I have gone back to one of the more elusive Pays, and the notes I have for the Hearth Tax have him in Hailes Bridge borough, Blackborne Hundred. I have found the Hundred, but not the Borough. From what I know, he lived in Mersham, but that does not seem to be in that Hundred.
I would also like to know how he came to be in Mersham!

Kent / St Mary Bredin Canterbury
« on: Friday 24 September 21 22:14 BST (UK)  »
I have found a marriage record from this church in 1675, but there is only a transcription available. The transcript is "copyright Dean and Chapter of Canterbury". I am wondering what the source of the record is - possibly the Bishops Transcripts?
Unfortunately the woman's surname is rather odd, and I can't track her down any further! (Elizabeth Fawell)

Technical Help / Hotmail/Outlook problem
« on: Sunday 12 September 21 16:52 BST (UK)  »
I am not sure if this my computer or a more general problem, but for several weeks now Outlook has been behaving oddly. It is slow to open up, but my son tells me that could be because of all the security I have! The messages then do not open properly first time, just bringing up grey bars instead of text. There are other oddities which are hard to describe, so I will leave it at that.

The Common Room / Staffordshire accents
« on: Thursday 02 September 21 17:05 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone who knows the area will spot this! I heard part of a programme on the radio this morning about Stoke on Trent, and was surprised to hear that all the people who appeared had a "northern" accent. I have a cousin with a strong Walsall accent, and I had the impression that the Black Country accent was similar. I looked at a map and realised that Stoke is as near Sheffield as it is to Birmingham, so have I been under a misapprehension all my life?
I tried to find one of the maps of linguistic boundaries, but without success.

Wales / Welsh placenames
« on: Sunday 08 August 21 18:11 BST (UK)  »
The grandchildren have just been to North Wales, and we were talking about placenames. I know there are many beginning with Llan, which on-line translators have as Church. Is this correct? There are also many Llanfihangels, and I have a vague memory that the second element of this is Michael. Am I right?
