Leicestershire / Re: Leicestershire Prison & Inquests - John JARMAN
« on: Wednesday 19 January 22 19:06 GMT (UK)  »
It was a long time ago that I started the research on John Jarman - ill-health forced me to give it up - had to move house etc. I did find out that John Jarman was in prison for attempting to murder his wife - as I remember it he'd been to USA and when he came back to his wife and children they had a big public argument when the assault took place. Whilst in prison some friends visited him with a drink. He committed suicide by breaking the bottle. I'm putting this from memory - I got the info from a local newspapers which covered the story extensively. Before I stopped my research I passed all the info I had to a lady in the States, and I think she shared it all on her tree in ancestry. The only question that remained for me was how he afforded the trip to America - and where and why did he go there? I'm guessing there were probably relatives there, but I didn't discover them.

Roots never fails to amaze me - years after an original posting an ancestor you didn't know existed suddenly appears! I wonder if the Anne Lowe 1771 was related to my Garston Catholic inlaw relatives. Another Garston name I think.

Have been filling my lockdown looking at in-laws tree. Irish - which is an unknown area for my research so am hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. Findmypast produced a hint amongst prisoners of war - and I'd like to know if he is related to inlaws family. The POW records dont give any place of birth or dob or parents' names - very unlikely to be related to my tree but I wonder whether there is anywhere you can find the personal details of the POWs - he was in the Connaught Rangers; inlaws came from Kilkenny but I don't know whether that's any help

Thank you for any help - even if it just confirms my suspicion that this isn't 'my' family

thanks for your reply. I'm not sure whether getting to Kew is a possibility, but I shall pass the information on. I'll also ask whether he has any objection to my putting his father's info online. I am actually a findmypast subscriber - how do I access merchant navy records from that site; I haven't been very successful so far.
I am grateful for any help and will get back to this link if son-in-law agrees to it.

World War Two / ww2 merchant navy war records

Hi - I'm making this query on behalf of my son-in-law. He wants to get hold of his father's war record - his father was in the merchant navy and apparently served in 2 separate ships which were torpedoed - at least one of these episodes featured in the Liverpool newspaper.
I have no experience of applying for merchant navy records but I seem to remember when I applied for my father's RAF records I had to prove I was the next of kin, so I guess this might also apply to the merchant navy records.
Can anyone give us a link to where my son-in-law could get more information please?

Thanks Lesley

Ayrshire / Re: Armour Family of Mauchline

Hi David

There is this snippet regarding the Armour Family Bible:

The Armour Family Bible, which contains the record of the marriage of James Armour and Mary Smith, 7th December 1761, and the register of the birth of their children, is in the Burns house, Mauchline. The imprint on the title page is: 'Edinburgh, printed by Adrian Watkins, 1756'.

Monica  :)

Is there a connection between James Armour and Mary Smith you mention?

Rootschatters are amazing. Thank you all for your help. Thanks to minniehaha in particular, who has found this relative, who (as I suspected from passenger lists) was born in New Zealand. I now have a new thread to help my research - after over 20 years - and it may lead to a whole new look to my family tree. Thank you all again - and to everyone else, never give up, you may well break down even the most stubborn brick wall! x

He may well be alive - and as the split with the family was acrimonious I can't place details in public domain - I actually hope to find another branch of the family who has the 'missing link' that I've been looking for these 20plus years! Thanks for the hint about births etc - could be vital
