Surrey / Re: Query about a 1755 Will document

What's the name of your ancestor, maybe we can help

Thanks for responding. I didn't provide names for two reasons - Firstly, I've found some of my previous post are easily accessible via a google search, things are more public than I expected, not sure yet if posts can be deleted. Secondly, I thought the name wouldn't necessarily make any difference to the potential answer as the same problem may happen with other Wills, albeit rarely.

Surrey / Query about a 1755 Will document
« on: Friday 16 December 16 05:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

A while ago I downloaded a digital copy of a Will dated 1755. In the Will, one of the beneficiaries had the same name as the person who made the Will. However, no relationship was mentioned for either beneficiary.

I have an ancestor with the same name born about the same time. So how can I ever hope to ascertain if my ancestor was the grandson of the person who made the Will? I've searched many times to find my ancestor's baptism but some of the records for Southwark are in a poor condition or not online. My ancestor died in 1810.

The person who made the Will was a Backmaker. My ancestor with the same name was a Victualler. So he could have descended from a family in the Brewing trade.

This is one of my brick walls. I'd really appreciate some suggestions, please.

Cheers,
Em

Cheers BumbleB, that's rather interesting! Our William Whitaker was a Publican, we don't know yet if he was from a family of brewers. Can you please tell me the source of that information? Much appreciated.  :) :)

Whilst I cannot see the baptisms, there is a burial at St Saviour on 3 May 1761 for William son of Joseph Whitaker, brewer's servant, infant.

Hi,

I've two baptisms but no parent(s) detail on either record. Can anyone ascertain for me if there is any additional information on the FHL film for their baptism, please? Both events are also on Ancestry but no parent details there either. This missing data may help me to break down a brick wall. Were both lads from the same family (maybe first one died and another lad was later given the same name) or were they cousins etc?

William Whitaker 19 April 1761 St Saviour, Southwark. FHL microfilm 307,706.

Wm. Whitaker 28 July 1765 St Saviour, Southwark. FHL microfilm 307,706.

I have not yet found a burial record.

Cheers,
Aussie

Canada Lookup Request / Re: British Military service and Marriage in Canada c.1807
« on: Saturday 04 June 16 22:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi Cousin!  ;D Thank you for your comments and for trying to sort out the Canadian connection. I only have a possible baptism for Rosina/Rosanna, which I've yet to confirm... a marriage record might  confirm her surname.  Have you had a chance to read all these posts? Some kind people on Rootschat helped me to sort out the location that Rosina was from. I might also have found Joseph's baptism but have no other documents, at this stage, to confirm that either. I've got some of Jane's descendants on my family tree. I descend via Jane's brother, Frederick. I'll send you a private message later when I am more awake.  Cheers.  :D

Joseph Howell was my 4x great grandfather too. I saw your first posts and now this one a few years later. It seems you have got further than me, but have you solved the Rosina thing? I have even searched Canadian maps to see if there is a town called Coughin, Essex over there, just in case the enumerator didn't know what to do about the Canadian bit so left it off, or in case Rosina just thought there was a bit of mischief to be had by not detailing the Canada bit. Anyway I didn't get anywhere with that stray thought either! I am linked to him through Frederick H. the son, then Jane the granddaughter. I would be very interested in seeing any records, such as the military ones that you have . . . I am unable to travel to archives and sort of do this on and off between children and elderly parents and the like.

Hi Max

Thank you very much. I had reached that conclusion because of the proximity to the two churches, but it's wonderful to have it confirmed with your map.  ;D ;D

Cheers,
Em

Hi Em

Another small bit of clarification.  Comparing the street map of 1895 with today's map, it is clear that Denbigh Close of today is exactly the same place as Denbigh Mews back then (I think it would be legitimate to say that 20 years before that the name would have been the same.  I'll send you a link by PM.

Yes, thanks so much, that's the one I found as text only initially but have since found the digital image. Everyone has been so helpful!  ;D

Cheers.

Baptism, 23 June 1861, says
Emma
parents William + Mary Ann Smith
abode 4 Kensington Place
father a Labourer
born 12 Ap. 1850

Obviously ditto for William, except the birth date (1 June 1861)
