Census and Resource Discussion / birth place confusion on censuses
« on: Sunday 29 August 04 11:50 BST (UK)  »
Thought I'd have a change and search for my husbands maternal side.  I have the Robinson family on 1871/81/91 & 1901 censuses, so I should be happy BUT

1871 census has JAMES ROBINSON ageD 40 born LINCS/BIELBY ( I can only find Bielbly near Market Weighton in E Yorks) and his wife Mary A(nn) aged 35 born YORKS/PAULL.
James died 1878 aged 47 in Sculcoates

1881 has MARY ANN ROBINSON head/widow aged 45 born SPALDING/LINCS

1891 has MARY A ROBINSON head/widow aged 55 born SPILSBY/LINCS

1901 MARY A ROBINSON aged 65 born HULL

there is a continuity of children through each census so I'm sure it's the same family but how can I find but how can I find births/marriages for James & Mary Ann if they haven't given the correct info on the census.

Sorry I've rambled on but I'm confused

« on: Sunday 22 August 04 20:38 BST (UK)  »
on the 1871 census i have a relative who's birthplace is given as Offchurch/Norfolk.

the only Offchurch i can find is near Royal Leamington Spa in Warwickshire.

does anyone know if there is another Offchurch or similar in Norfolk, or have county borders moved that much?

Family History Beginners Board / how do I find the right birth?
« on: Monday 12 July 04 01:40 BST (UK)  »
I'm having difficulty trying to find my grandfather's birth, his name is George Holmes, he died 20 December 1967 aged 72 in Hull, he was married 14 December 1918 in Hull.   His marriage certificate gives his father as Thomas Henry Holmes (a labourer).

Supposedly George's mother was called Annie.  I've tried using the 1901 census but have had no luck in matching all the names, the main problem being I don't know where George was born.  I have found several Georges born in Hull but how do I decide which might be the right one?

Norfolk / marriage - help needed
« on: Friday 23 April 04 21:45 BST (UK)  »
I'm bashing my head against a brickwall trying to find my gt grandparents marriage.    I have my grandfather Henry Tuttle marriage cert which gives his father as Samuel Tuttle and I have his birth cert which gives his mother as Esther Tuttle formerly Quantrill.    On the 1851 census Samuel and Ester are married and living in Wicklewood, Norfolk.

I've tried looking on 1837 on-line but have had no luck, can anyone help or point me in the right direction please :)

Norfolk / Tuttle/Quantrill in Norfolk
« on: Thursday 01 April 04 23:46 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather Henry Tuttle was born in Wicklewood in 1862, according to his birth certificate his parents are Samuel Tuttle and Esther Quantrill.    They are shown on the 1851 census as husband and wife  but so far I have not been able to trace birth , marriage or death for them.    A family story suggests that Esther died and Samuel remarried.    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
