Leicestershire / Thomas Holt in Thurlaston - and George?
« on: Thursday 03 July 14 17:24 BST (UK)  »
Am trying to find the birth of George HOLT and his parents.

George HOLT b abt 1826 Thurlaston is my gggf. He was a gardener/seedsman and then butcher. He married Elizabeth CARTER in 1846 and on his marriage certificate he names his father as John, a labourer. George died in Market Harborough in 1885.

I found George in 1841 as a carpet factory boy aged 15 living with a John Coleman 37 labourer, his wife Elizabeth 33 and 4 children. The wife is in fact Elizabeth HOLT, George's big sister. HO107/589/30/17.  I investigated John Coleman a bit more and found he first married Elizabeth's sister, Sarah!!

Elizabeth b1805 and Sarah b1807 were 2 of the 10 children I believe born to Thomas HOLT and Hannah, all at Thurlaston.

I cannot find a marriage for Thomas to a Hannah but did find a marriage to Ann ROWLSON 20 Dec 1801 in Earls Shilton, just close to Thurlaston. There is a possible child Thomas of this marriage, bap 18 Jul 1802 Earl Shilton.

There's a death of a wife, Ann Holt, wife of Thomas, on the Leics burials for Barwell. Aged 22, 11 Feb 1817. Probably died in childbirth?

So was this Ann Rowlson? And who was Hannah? Were they the same. Did Thomas marry twice?

There is a possible death for a Thomas HOLT 23 Nov 1837 Thurlaston aged 66, again from the Leics burials, but this death does not show up on FreeBMD. I guess the system was just so new, some folk maybe didn't register BMDs as they should have done? The age at death gives an approximate DOB for Thomas of 1771.

Is anyone connected with any of these people? I understand the Thurlaston registers were destroyed or are missing or something. I would be so grateful if anyone could shed any light on this puzzle. Thank you.

Armed Forces / Charles James Jamieson, Bengal Staff Corps
« on: Saturday 07 June 14 21:04 BST (UK)  »
I have exhausted all resources I can think so need the help of the wonderful folk on this forum.

Charles James Jamieson b abt 1848 but don't know where so cannot locate him anywhere on UK censuses. He died in 1891.

Charles married Maria Graves 7 Aug 1873 in Murree, Bengal, India and father named as James.
No need for anyone to delve into Graves family; Maria, born in Preston 1850, came from a large family. Her father, Henry, was Manager of Preston Banking. Two of Maria's brothers - William Percival Graves and Benjamin Champney Graves, were in the Royal Artillery attached to the Bengal Staff Corps. I guess this is how Maria came to meet Charles Jamieson.

Maria died in 1930 in Oxford and Charles died 1891 in Barton Regis.
She and Charles had 4 children, all of whom have been successfully investigated. The first three children were all born in Bengal. Clara Crofton b 1874, Adelaide May b 1876, Charles Reginald Hutton died an infant. The last child, Jean Lois, b 1884 Cornwall.

Charles was a member of the Bengal Staff Corps and died a Major. This info came from his probate details. Probate: Charles James Jamieson late of Wimborne Villa, Clifton Park Road, Clifton, Bristol, Major in HM Bengal Staff Corps who died 17 Feb 1891 at Wimborne Villa was granted probate to Maria Jamieson, widow. He left £218 13s 7d. The equivalent in 2005 would have been £12,477.83.

I would really like to find the name of his mother and place of birth. I am beginning to suspect he was possibly born in India. I have tried the FIBIS site to no avail. (http://www.fibis.org/) Excellent site others might find helpful.

Can anyone shed any light of Charles James Jamieson's parents, father being definitely James Jamieson?

Kind regards

Orkney / Elenora Wemyss RENDALL
« on: Wednesday 19 February 14 20:02 GMT (UK)  »
Doing research for someone.
Looking for a marriage of Magnus CRAIGIE b 29 Oct 1823 Egilsay and Elenora Wemyss RENDALL b 15 Nov 1824 Egilsay. I have tried all sorts of variations on Scotland's People. Magnus and Elenora are on the 1851 census as man and wife.

Elenora was apparently known as Helen Rendall. This is the name on her death certificate where she confirms she was wife of Magnus.

Names on censuses show her as Hellenor, Eleanor and Eleaner.

Elenora died 21 Dec 1878. Helen/Elenora also confirms her parents as Thomas Rendall and Elspet Garson.

Magnus Craigie then married Ann MOWAT, widow. MS Grieve. I have that marriage certificate.

Can anyone help me locate this marriage, please, of Magnus Craigie to Elenora Wemyss Rendall.

Kind regards
Suzie

London and Middlesex / John Christmas and Eliza Kemp
« on: Friday 01 November 13 11:19 GMT (UK)  »
Doing some research for a friend and cannot find parents of John Christmas.

He married Eliza KEMP (b1819 in Rawreth, Essex) in Stepney in 1839. They had 8 children, most tracked through the censuses. John was a basket-maker in Spitalfields in 1851 and then in Bow, London 1871 onwards.

The censuses state he was b abt 1816/1817 in Shadwell, Middlesex but cannot find any parents on the LDS site.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Sussex / HOOK families in Hastings
« on: Monday 30 September 13 12:01 BST (UK)  »
I am doing research for a friend.

George Henry HOOK was born 1857 Hastings, the 10th and last child of the family. I have him tracked through the censuses. His parents are my problem! In 1861 he was aged 3 with his parents George HOOK a fisherman b abt 1810 Hastings and his wife Ann, born Chester abt 1812.

George senior and Ann had 10 children, the first being born abt 1833. I cannot find a marriage for George and Ann. I've searched using LDS and batch numbers for Hastings. I looked for a possible birth of Ann in Chester but nothing popped up that could help.

Is anyone researching this family and could help?
Kind regards

Midlothian / Mary AFFLECK
« on: Friday 06 September 13 10:09 BST (UK)  »
Many people helped me find Mary's maiden name. Now I'm after a bit more guidance please.
Where and when was she born? In 1871 she is 10 and b Ulathbeck, Edinburgh. Is that a place or a house/farm name? Gives a birth year of 1860/61 which tallies with the death cert - aged 89 in 1949.

Mary married twice: first to John LIDDELL in 1891 (said she was 25) and then to Alexander GARDINER in 1900 (said she was 37, yet census of same year notes her as 39!). On both marriage certs she names her mother as Agnes Affleck. The ONLY time Mary mentions her father's name - Frederick DUNN - is on her second marriage cert. Mother named as Agnes DUNN ms Affleck which suggests they were in fact married - but I can't find it! Nor can I locate them on any censuses. Am I also right in thinking Mary could have been illegitimate as she took her mother's surname and only mentions her father so he might be stepfather?

Can anyone make sense of this?

Midlothian / William FAWNS and Mary LIDDELL
« on: Wednesday 04 September 13 09:55 BST (UK)  »
Doing some research for couple of sisters and need some help, please.

William FAWNS married Mary LIDDELL 29 Apr 1927 in Edinburgh. I have the cert from SP. William's father was Colin, a gas engineer. Mary's father was John, noted as deceased, colliery checkweigher. Her mother was Mary LIDDELL but I can't read the maiden surname. They were living in Crichton Street, Edinburgh.

Can anyone help? Is anyone researching this family?
Thanks. Suzie

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Isabella WALKER, wife of James RODGER
« on: Friday 13 July 12 10:01 BST (UK)  »
Am looking for the parents of Isabella WALKER.  Isabella married James RODGER on 3 Jul 1819 at Kilconquhar, Fife. I have found the family in 1841 and 1851, also in Fife.

Isabella's place of birth is given as Ratho, West Lothian and she would have been born about 1803. but I cannot find anything that jumps out at me from the IGI.

Husband James died in 1867 and he was a widower then. Cannot find Isabella in 1861 so think she must have died before then. Nor can I find a death cert for her on Scotland's People.

Can anyone help, please?
