Completed Census Requests / Re: Mystery In Law *Completed* thank you
« on: Sunday 11 December 11 17:49 GMT (UK)  »
I noticed you and Ober have delved into SCHEFFERS.
I'm doing the same and getting the same results you did.
I can't match them to the  family history I know.
Mary Elizabeth SCHEFFERS was my great grandmother -- although I don't remember actually meeting her -- who lived in Swansea and Knighton -- that I know of.
She married Chrieste AMUNDSEN (also known as Christopher AMUNDSON).
Mary had a sister, Laura SCHEFFERS.   Laura married a Sgt. James WOOLLARD in 1899.   The only Census reference is 1901 = Laura WOOLLARD with her AMUNDSEN relatives in Knighton, aged 22.   I am awaiting a Marriage Certificate.   They were married in Devonport.   WOOLLARD seems to have been in the Royal Army Medical Corps and reached the Temporay Rank of Major & Quatermaster;  serving in the 15th General Hospital, Alexandria, for most of WWI.
The Census provides NO link between Mary Elizabeth and Laura.   The knowledge I have is family history, including photographs.   Their father was Belgian -- I believe Robert SCHEFFERS, a Spelterman who worked in Swansea.
SCHEFFERS is a Dutch name -- as far as I know -- which means he would have been Flemish Belgian.

Can any one help unravell the confusion of the Census information, etc.?

Hi,
Many thanks for you quick reply.
I have looked at the Muster Roll and found that one David Hughes was awarded a clasp, sent 1849, and another document relating to the battle.
Since posting, I've spoken with Swansea Archives and been pointed to their search of newspapers -- nothing relevant.   Also about the son's parents.   I may have hit a brick wall.   Again, a reply to my late father in 1978 only turned up the first name of Davih Hughes in relation to the sons (Bishops Transcripts).
Since then I have contacted the National Archives and -- on advice -- just sent them a detailed e-mail.   It appears that not all the participants may be on the muster roll online.   I have a list of 12 -- provided to my late father by the then curator of the Portsmouth Naval Museum (does it still exist?) that are not on the online muster roll.   The NA wanted to check this.

Because of certain health problems, I cannot travel very far, so I have to do this via internet -- its an immense help.

Just for interest -- though I really would like to know -- I would like to identify the cutlass (see attached).
The French Maritime Museum thought it an altered Model 1780.
The guard has a letter A added.
Very recently I saw an almost identical weapon on a dealers' site -- a Dutch Hanger (whatever Hanger means, refers to).   Were Dutchmen on any French ships in Trafalgar?   (re.   Batavia Republic).
It has a number etched on the handle = 3B  3BN4.
The dealer hinted it was a Dutch Militia regimental (?) number.   Does anyone know?
Thanks

Armed Forces / Trafalgar -- trying to establish relative

I am new to this...please forgive if in the wrong post.
Family tradition says I have a relative who fought in the Battle of Trafalgar.   I even have a cutlass that has been handed down and claimed to have been there.   Until recently we only knew his family name -- HUGHES -- and who his children were:
James HUGHES:
born:   3 July 1809 (Swansea)
baptised:  7 July 1809 (St Marys Church, Swansea)
married:   date unknown,  first name = Jane (maiden name unknown -- do know b:  1809, d:  March 1891;  interred 13 March 1891);  Swansea
died:   December 1896 (Swansea);  interred: 2 January 1897 (Danygraig Cemetery)
John HUGHES:
born:  4 August 1810 (Swansea)
baptised:   16 August 1810 (St Marys Church, Swansea)
died:   unknown
No other information about him.
A response form the National Library for Wales (to my late-father in 197*) claimed the father was David HUGHES.   No other information is known about him.
I have found several David HUGHES on the Trafalgar Roll, but cannot link these to the children.
Can anyone please help to try and identify dates of BMD, places lived, more information on his naval service?
It is believed he could sign his name and was not an officer.
Any information would be gratefully received.
