Angela,

Karen ask if I can help with all the abv.
Sorry for taking so long, I haven't been on site in over a month.

MBE

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry established on 4 June 1917 by King George V. The Order includes five classes in civil and military divisions; in decreasing order of seniority, these are

    * Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GBE)
    * Knight or Dame Commander (KBE or DBE)
    * Commander (CBE)
    * Officer (OBE)
    * Member (MBE)

Only the two highest ranks entail admission into knighthood.

S.B.St.J

Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem
The Order is divided into the following Classes:

    * Grade I - Bailiffs or Dames Grand Cross (G.C.St.J)
    * Grade II - Knights or Dames of Justice or Grace (K.St.J or D.St.J)
    * Grade III - (a) Chaplains (Ch.St.J) and (b) Commanders (Brothers or Sisters) (C.St.J)
    * Grade IV - Officers (Brothers or Sisters) (O.St.J)
    * Grade V - Serving Brothers or Serving Sisters (S.B.St.J) or (S.S.St.J)
    * Grade VI - Esquires (Esq.St.J)

QMS

Quarter Master Stores.
He would have been in charge of medical supplies at the time.

WO11
Warrant Officer second class (see old picture)
Today, it is the Queens Crown and it's just Warrant Officer. (see new picture)
The rank is third from the top in the non commissioned ranks, just above Sergeant.

Hope this helps.

Denise

Thanks,
Everyone thought they were married in England.
And the spelling is wrong as well.
That explains a lot.

I did not know Ruby had a book out.
Know where I can get a copy?

FreeBMD won't work in this case because the gap lies in Canada, I think.
From 1811 to 1825.  But I do have a use for that site on the Taylor side of the family.  Alot of ships sailed to Quebec in 1824.  The petition for land was reg. in 1824 as well.  I may have some luck there.
Thanks for the tip.

I have an idea.

John Baird was granted a land claim in 1825.
Mary Beard was was a widow in Upham NB by the time the '51 census was taken.

If someone has a copy of the census to see if there was a lot number or something along that line, it maybe another clue to the identity and possibly a link.

The lots may have been re-numbered when the township lines changed but I'll be able to cross ref with the U of NB historical maps in the fall.

Showed my Aunt your post.  Some things clicked with her:

"As I read these, there are several names which were family names in our Baird line, e.g. George, Robert (Baird).  The name Wilfred Smith attracted my attention.  The owner of the property in Titusville, that is adjacent to the property owned by my great grandfather (William Barnes) Baird and subsequently his son James, and then my father, Jones, was a Wilfred Smith.  It could be that Capt. John followed earlier settlers from the same area in Gr. Britain."

We both think you may have stumbled on to something.  THANKS!!
The land in Titusville NB may not be clear title so there might not be any records.
I am trying to recrut a local historian http://www.rubycusack.com that went to school with my Aunt to see if we can close the gap on some dates.  I've got a lead on a 1825 land grant, very promising.

I started realy digging in the IGI for George, Robert and John with either Baird or Beard
I found this:

George Beard
Elizabeth Lambshaw

Chlidren

Robert ch. 11 NOV 1787,  Saint Cuthbert
George ch. 17 APR 1785,  Saint Cuthbert
John ch. 17 JUN 1792,  Saint Cuthbert

Others:??
John ch. 28 AUG 1785  Saint Cuthbert d. 21 MAR 1790 (Mothers f. name match - no last)

This appears to be the wrong family, John Beard is too young, he would have been 19 in his second marriage and could not have mastered a ship.

Robert and George could have owned the shops in town.
It appears at this time that this family may not be connected.
But the John at Crosscannoby still exists and was married to Mary.

I found out how my John died, he took a horseshoe to the head, only one problem, the horse was still attached at the time.
He also had a govn't land grand in New Brunswick, I did find this, Hampton Kings County NB Date 08/12/1825.  The date seems a little late but a darn good chance.

What is on one of these land Grants?  Is it worth $7 canadian?

Well I'm off to the Sergeant's and Warrant's Mess.  It's Friday, you know.

You can attach their images and tell everyone where you got it.
