US Lookup Requests / Re: Moses Hayball - death

Is there any connection to this thread - unusual name

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=850858.msg7184510#msg7184510

I’ve just replied above you, I found this thread after posting my post you have linked to above  - I believe there is a connection. But I think two Moses born around the same time have been mixed up in this thread. One went to St Helier and one didn’t.

I am interested in the One who went to St Helier and particular Sarah Littlejohns and Mary Ann Quarm

Is Moses shown as a widower on that marriage cert &is his occ gardener?

Yeah he is a widow. He appears to marry quite a few times.

First to Maria Hawker in Somerset. He ends up on St Heliers with her. Then Dorcas Thomas and then Sarah Littlejohns.

There may also be a Mary Ann Quarm also as there is a burial in 1860 of Mary Ann Hayball daughter of Moses and Mary Ann Quarm but as yet I have not been able to find a marriage.

So I definitely think the two Moses have been mixed up here.

Moses who married Sarah Coombes appears to be a labourer/lace manufacturer I believe he is the son of Philip and I don’t believe he is the one who ends up in St Helier.

Moses who ends up in St Helier (the gardener) and son of James married Maria Hawker he is with her in 1841 in St Helier. When she dies sometime in St Helier he then marries Dorcas Thomas and lastly Sarah Littlejohns. Although I haven’t been able to confirm if he also married Mary Ann Quarm in St Helier (there is a child born 1860 and died 1860 names Mary Ann Hayball to Moses Hayball and Mary Ann Quarm). I think this Mary Ann Quarm may be the  daughter of Robert Quarm and Sarah Temperance Littlejohns who also ends up in Utah and dies shortly after her arrival.

It does look possible that both Moses (son of Philip and son of James) maybe ended up in Utah as there is a death in 1867 and a death in 1876.

I think the 1867 one is likely son of James and 1876 looking at age is likely son of Philip.

The Moses who goes to St Helier appeared to use a middle name Cook at one point.

This would explain the additional marriages in Utah as it’s actually both Moses that appear to be there around the same time. They are most likely cousins or close relatives at least.

I am not related to the Hayball family, but am descended from the Littlejohns family I mentioned hence my interest.

In 1857 in St Helier. I have found a Sarah Littlejohns marrying Moses Hayball

According  to the marriage she was born around 1822 in Plymouth and father is Edward Littlejohns supposedly a confectioner.

I can’t find a baptism for Sarah or find her father in any records.

However there is my ancestors Edward Littlejohns who married Sarah Eddy in 1817 in stoke dameral. He appears to be the only Edward of right age to father Sarah in 1822 in Plymouth. However his occupation is a carpenter/builder. This Edward died in 1828 in Plymouth.

To confuse things however. Edward was previously married to a Temperance Dodge. Their daughter Sarah Temperance Littlejohns born 1805 also ends up in St Helier with husband Robert Quarm. Her occupation was a confectioner.

Another child Edwin Littlejohns born 1828 (my 3x great grandfather) also ends up in St Helier where he marries my 3x great grandmother Jane Bennett. They then end up in London in 1851.

I am wondering if this Sarah Littlejohns born 1822 may actually be a child of Edward Littlejohns and Sarah Eddy, maybe she just gave the occupation of her half sister for the  marriage when asked what occupation her father had?

I just can’t find any baptism of this Sarah to confirm my theory. What do you think?

can anyone help me find out what happened to her? I can’t locate her on any census records and I also can’t find any death record.

I’m not sure if there might be two Moses Hayballs involved here born around the same time in the same place, are we sure of which one end up in Utah? Or did both end up in Utah? (Edit it looks like someone here confirmed there was two born around the same time)

I have Moses marrying Sarah Littlejohns in 1857 in St Helier. I can’t find anything for Sarah after this date. Father is James Hayball - occupation Gardener

In 1860 there is also a death of Mary Ann Hayball in St Helier (she was also born in1860) - parents Moses Hayball and Mary Ann Quarm

Funnily enough many of the Quarm family from St Helier also end up in Utah.

Are we sure we are not mixing up the two Moses born around the same time here. Did both go go Utah? There seems to be a lot of crosses of marriages so I think these two Moses may be getting mixed up here.

I am wondering if Sarah Temperance Lttlejohns might be a sibling to William Littlejohns son of Edward and Temperance Littlejohns of Plymouth. I believe when temperance died Edward went on to marry my 4x great grandmother Sarah Addy.

Did  you get any further with the Littlejohns side?

I have a dna match to descendants of Sarah Temperance now, so can definitely confirm my ancestor was her half brother.

Edwin my ancestor her half brother, ended up in Jersey too where he married my 3xgreat grandmother. It’s possible the Edwin middle name from one of her children came from him.

Be interesting to get in touch with anyone connected to try and piece together the Littlejohns family.

Oh no, and there was me thinking we had cracked it, especially because of the address. Too many Bennett families and far too confusing, my head hurts from this family I tell you lol .

I wonder if Mary Bennett and daughter Elizabeth are relatives of Charity’s husband. I think Bennett was very common in that area at that time though. It’s been really hard to trace this family.

Samuel - Charity’s husband is also giving me quite the headache, as I originally thought I found a military record for him but think now this may of been a different Samuel of similar age. I have another post on here from quite a few years ago re: Samuel.

So if we have ruled out this Elizabeth burial, it means that she either possibly married or died at a different time. I can’t locate her in 1861, which would make you assume she would have died between 1851 and 1861 or married in that time. Still struggling with her sister Mary who possibly married William Goddard (still not 100% sure on that either), I wonder if they went overseas, as there is zilch to be found on them after 1851, but I can’t pinpoint any of them elsewhere either.

Re: William the grandson of Charity - I think he may have joined the navy, there is one that matches the census and a William Henry Bennett born 1845 in Stoke Damerel that appears to be illegitimate (I need to order cert to confirm if one of Charity’s daughters is the mother) as I can’t find a baptism. It’s super confusing as there appears to be two Williams born at the same time and is troublesome trying to pinpoint which one is which.

Thanks so much for your help with this, it’s appreciated.

Also in 1851 is a William Bennett born about 1846 with Charity. He is listed as her grandson.

Since Charity only had one son William and I’ve decently discovered her son died young

This William grandson must be a illegitimate child to one of her daughters.

I can’t figure out which one though and can’t trace him after 1851 either.

An Elizabeth BENNETT of Granby Street, Devonport (Charity lived there in 1851) was buried at Ford Park Cemetery 27 Jan 1852, aged 30.

Can I ask where you found that info? I can’t see it indexed, was it searching images?

Thank so much
