Hi "elzabels'
Thanks for the research you've done, you are very right about all the bits and pieces ;) I've ordered William Ashton the painters will.

Proprietess... looks more like proprietejs! ha ha! But I can see you are right.

Would be fantastic if you could take a picture of the gravestone!

How does one find cemetery records online other than "findagrave.com"? In Christchurch our libraries have online records, many others are online too, which is very handy for research. Our Parish BDM's are also online which makes it very easy to order certificates and find more info about ancestors.

Wow, what great news!!! Thanks so much for everyone who has been helping!

I Have found the Electoral Rolls of Cheshire and William Ashton recorded living at Wellington Road South #'s 96, 98 & 100 between 1843 till 1857. Assuming he died after that I found a Burial Record from Stockport Municipal Cemetery where he was buried 3 July 1858 and its estimated from his age that he was born in 1809. His Will confirms William, the painter, left his Estate to Ann, Samuel & Eliza Ann (of 3000 Pounds - proved 13 Aug 1858).

William Ashton Baptism/Christening on 26 Oct 1809 at High Street Presbyterian, Stockport, Born 03 Sep 1809; Father's Name: Samuel Ashton Mother's Name: Sally Booth.

In 1861 Census Ann Ashton born in Proprietess of Houses & Landed Property. She is living with their kids: Samuel (12) & Eliza Ann (10), her father Thomas Johnshon (80), sister Harriet Blackwell (55) & Ann Hearsley (servant).

In 1871 Census Ann Ashton born in Marton, Cheshire abt 1815. Living with her son Samuel Ashton (22), sister Harriet (66) also Marton, Cheshire, Fanny Haken (28) (servant).

Update: Found children baptised to William Ashton & Amey Beswick at Orchard Street/ Churchgate Independent, Stockport:
1)George bapt 18 Nov 1832,
2)George born 14 May & bapt 10 Aug 1834,
3)Sarah Ann born 14 Feb & bapt 20 Mar 1836.

I'm interested in finding his 1st wife Amy's marriage and their birth records if possible... can't seem to find anywhere ???

Have been slowly wading through all the William Ashton Census records. The most intriguing is the

1841 where he is also a Painter (like Amy Ashtons death cert). They were living seperately, he in Macclesfield, Stockport, about 12kms away for Cheadle. Strangely he was living with 15 yr old Elizabeth Wilson & his apprentice John Beswick who's age I cannot read.

1851 Census, assuming he's the only single one, was living in Cheadle, Stockport with his sister Ann & niece Fanny as a cotton mill manager born in Stockport.

1861 Census, assuming he's the only single one, was living in Heaton Norrris with his sister Ann (age 63) & brother Joseph (age 67) as a gas regulator manufacturer born in Stockport.

Can't find any that say he is a widow however because he is always head of household. It is entirely possible that he remarried and changed profession after Amy's death. There is one census of Cheadle where he was living with John & Sarah Toping and married to his daughter Elizabeth with John's grandchildren Joseph (age 6) & William (age 4). William is a factory hand & they married in 1849 in St Mary, Cheadle, Stockport.

Other marriages before 1851 census:
1841 ASHTON  William BILLINGTON Martha Stockport, St Mary Stockport
1841 ASHTON William WHITTINGHAM Alice Stockport, St Mary Stockport
1843 ASHTON William PINDAR Jane Stockport, St Mary Stockport
1844 ASHTON William Marvel HOBSON Catherine Stockport, St Mary Stockport
1844 ASHTON William BARLOW Sarah Ann Cheadle, St Mary Stockport

Sampson Clayton Marriage (/Intent?) Jul-Sep 1855 in Hayfield, Glossop (7b,pg789) (most likely Sampson Ashton & Rachel Higginbottoms intention to marry in Rachels home town!). They married on 29 Dec 1856 at St. Mary’s Church, Cheadle, Cheshire. Both Rachel and Sampson were living in Brinksway, Stockport at the time. Their first son Thomas Henry Ashton was either born/bap Jan-Mar Qtr 1857 in Stockport &/ born/bap Jul-Sep 1857 in Glossop. They left him with the Higginbottom sisters in Glossop however and in the census' he was said to have been born in Glossop.

Well something that puzzling wouldn't surprise me at this stage. Sampson Ashton's origins have always been very much a mystery and it may have been why they moved around the area so much and perhaps why he left with Rachel Higgenbottom and their son Thomas Henry to live in New Zealand.

Do you think that its possible the William Ashton mentioned on Amy Ashton's Cert is more likely her father who's wife was also Amy. There must be a Marriage of her parents and her birth record from 1809?

By the way, I also have researched Sampson Clayton's family in the mean time. If anyone is interested I could add the info. It seems likely that they are descendents of Ralph Clayton & Helen/Ellen Swan Married 7 Apr 1729 in Hartington, Wirksworth, Derbyshire who moved to Stockport / Glossop area.

Also have Rachel Higgenbottoms ancestry back to James Higginbotham of Glossop who Married Hannah Beard of Glossop on 6 May 1739. Atleast, this lineage is assuming the family were attending St Mary`s Independent Chapel Charlesworth and were residing in Glossop the whole time.

Great news for those who are either related through the Clayton family or descendents of Sampson Ashton!
I have received the Birth Cert of Sampson Ashton and the Death Cert of Amy Ashton. I'd like to share this new discovery and potentially finalize this post.

Sampson Ashton was born 1 Feb 1839 in New Road, Heaton Norris, Stockport. His parents are Sampson Clayton (a block printer) & Amy Ann Clayton (nee Ashton). As for their marriage I cannot seem to find this anywhere if anyone can help. However, this brings us to the next certificate of his mother Amy.

Amy Ann Ashton, wife of William Ashton (a painter) died of Consumption at age 32 on 17 Aug 1841 at Wellington Road South, Stockport First. Buried Cheadle Edgeley (Methodist) on 20 August 1841. The Methodist/Wesleyan Chapel on Edgeley Road Stockport is now a Buddhist meditation centre, no sign of any gravestones. Very mysterious!

Close calls & mishaps:
1) William (gardener) & Amy Ashton are in 1841 Census of Hunt Croft, Werneth, Hyde near Stockport.
However their ages differ greatly: William, 54 and Amy 50 (!?)
2) Amy Ashton (Visitor) in 1861 census of Heaton Norris, Stockport age 70, birth in Hyde.
3) Amy Ashton Buried 22 Feb 1877 at St. George, Hyde, Cheshire, Age 85 (born 1792) &
4) Amy Ashton Buried 26 Nov 1878 at St. George, Hyde, Cheshire, Age 81 (born 1797)
5) Amy Ann Ashton Married John Wild on 17 Jun 1849 at ? Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire.
6) Amy Shawcross(single) & Thomas Ashton's (Intended) Marriage on 11 Sep 1809 at St Marys,
    Cheadle, Stockport
7) Emy Mottram's Marriage to Thomas Ashton 19 Oct 1818 in Stockport, Cheshire (...)

Wow!!! Thanks so much to everyone for helping, what a wonderfull surprise after work  :D The 1851 Census of Dinting, Whitfield, I previously mentioned has only Sampson Ashton mentioned on the original record. On the transcript there was Sampson Clayton mentioned! Perhaps Sampson was born a Clayton! Did his mother in fact have an illegitimate child to a Clayton and this would in fact make this family's connections make more sense? Was the marriage at St Mary's, Cheadle with Orlando Hague in fact her? But wouldn't it be mentioned in the census of 1841!

As to the questions about marriage cert...yes I have outlined the details except it says he was born and married in Chessel/Chissel, Lancashire on his Death Cert also. I have yet to find his birth Cert so hopefully this Sampson Clayton is in fact my ancestor:) In the 1841 census of this Clayton family there was a Sampson Clayton born in Chinley, Derbyshire in 1811! Is this his father???

Just found John Wild & William Sultcliffe were the witnesses on marriage cert.
Also Marriage of Wiliam Clayton & Deborah Hawley in Macclesfield on 4 Jan 1808.
