Inverness / Re: Kilmuir: McPhees
« on: Tuesday 20 December 05 15:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Wini

Here's a bizarre fact that I'm not sure if you've come across. I did a parent search on IGI for Peter's parents to see what other children they had had, siblings to Peter, and found actual extract entries from the OPRs for the christenings of what could be twins, Catherine and Mary, on the same day of 22 Feb 1845 in Kilmuir. When I did the same for Janet/Jessie's parents Charles MacKinnon and Anne NIcolson, I also got a double christening date on 10 Aug 1841 in Kilmuir for children Ann and Murdoch.  These were the only children showing for both sets of parents and all were actual records not submitted records.

Children showing for Peter MacPhee and Janet/Jessie MacKinnon are:
Donald 22 Jan 1867/Charles 24 June 1868/John 3 July 1869/Ann 7 April 1872/Samuel 3 June 1874. All born in Kilmuir.

Argyllshire / Re: Ballygowan (Ballygoun)

Hi Dorie

There's a Ballygown in Mull (27 miles from Oban airport according to Street Map!).  Have a look at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ for an 1875 Ordnance Survey map location. Go to Argyll on the Gazetteer and from there to an alpha listing. Ballygown is the only thing coming up as a possible place name.

Inverness / Re: 1851 census Lookup please! Sleat, Skye
« on: Wednesday 30 November 05 14:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Oran

I did a parent search on Family Search for Elizabeth MacPherson and an entry comes up in Sleat on 7 Aug 1819.  She was actually christened Betty MacPherson.  She also had at least one brother called John who was born 20 Dec 1815 also in Sleat.

Now, I also did a marriage search for Elizabeth MacPherson,  marrying in the 1840s.  From those male names (grooms)  I also did a parent search with Elizabeth MacPherson as the mother to see if any of the couples had a son Alexander and there were two entries:

1. John Ross and Eliz. MacP: Married in 1848 and had Alexander Hector Ross on 26/12/1848 and John MacP Ross on 13/11/1850 . All entries for Inverness, Inverness-shire

2. William MacIntosh and Eliz. MacP: Married in 1841 and had Margaret 1847, Alexander 1849 and William 1851. All entries for Daviot and Dunlichity, Inverness

No way of confirming if these are relevant but I thought they might be useful for you to have, just in case!

On the issue of Elizabeth's parents, I don't know if you have used the official Scottish pay to view site, Scotland's People. I haven't viewed any certs. but I did a search for Cath*rine M*cPherson, other surname Robertson,  born 1790 +/- 10years and two entries came up in Inverness-shire. May be worth a look.

All the time! If I could go back in time, I would make it a law that you had to leave your life story in writing for your decendents - where/who/how/when and...why!!!

Hi Dwalin

Have a look at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ From the Gazetteer, go to the counties list and click on Linlithgowshire for an alphabetical list of place names including Blackridge. This site has the 1875 Ordnance Survey Maps which you can navigate around and also have the option to view modern maps. There is also an entry for Torphichen (Torphinan?).

Lanarkshire / Re: Whitelaw Family
« on: Saturday 19 November 05 12:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Coonwarra

I've just realised you had a second post showing Margaret's parents and siblings.  Hopefully now from my earlier post, you've got an actual birth date for Margaret.

One route for you to try is using  Family Search again. The family again seems well documented with a mixture of actual and submitted records.

I would try a 'marriage' search for each of the siblings. Once you have potential spouses, I would try a 'parent' search to show potential children for each couple.  There is often confirmation with the names of their children/place names  that you are on to the right family.  I've only tried it with one. For example, it would appear that Alison (Allison/Ellison) may have married a Thomas Muir, reinforced when you do a parent search and see what they called their children.

Good luck!

Lanarkshire / Re: Snaddon/Sneddon/Snedden and Whitelaw Families
« on: Saturday 19 November 05 11:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Coonwarra

The family seem relatively well documented on the IGI at www.familysearch.org

Firstly, there are two births showing for a James Snadden at Bo'ness, West Lothian:

1. 28 Mar. 1813 to George Snadden and Elizabeth Robertson
2. 31 Oct. 1813 to Richard Snadden and Margaret Snadden

Given the names of James and Margaret Whitelaw's children, No.1 is the most likely entry for him.

There is a marriage entry for a James Snaddon and Margaret Whitlaw on 01 Mar 1833 in Old Monkland, Lanark.

I also did a parent search to see what children were showing for James and Margaret. On Family Search you have:

1. George 1834
2. Mary Young 1836
3. James Whitelaw 1838
4. William 1842
5. Elizabeth 1849
6. Jane 1856

These are a combination of actual extracted birth/christening record entries and submitted records. There were no entries showing for the births of Samuel, John, and Robert. If you have a look on the IGI you will get the birth places (all in Lanark) and specific dates.

For Mary Whitelaw, there are a number of entries for births in 1814 in Lanark. There was one in particular that caught my eye.   There is an actual birth extract entry for the birth of a Margaret Whitlaw to a James Whitlaw and Mary Young on 24 July 1814 in Old Monkland, Lanark. Given the name of James and Margaret's first born daughter (according to IGI actual extracted birth records) being Mary Young Snaddon looks promising.

Regards.

Monica

PS.  A parent search for George Snadden and Elizabeth Robertson shows  probably James's siblings. The same for James Whitlaw and Mary Young with Margaret's likely siblings.

Lanarkshire / Re: Where is Elizabeth Beattie Davidson in the death indexes??
« on: Sunday 13 November 05 12:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Tees

Excuse my lack of knowledge.  What does her death is  'confirmed' by the Scottish GRO mean. Does that mean they have a record which would include the details of her death with date/place? How else would her death be confirmed by the GRO?

The closest I can get to on Scotlands People free searches is the death of an Elspeth Davidson/Russell in Elgin Moray age 54 in 1913 (birth year 1859).

Lanarkshire / Re: Birth / John Reid 1812 Lanark, Glasgow
« on: Sunday 13 November 05 09:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Jean

A good way for you to proceed is to use the official Scottish pay to view site for BMD and census data  at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  I used the free search facility without viewing the actual images.  There is only one recorded death in Lanark for a Flora Reid other surname Shaw between 1860-1900 with a birth year range of 1820 +/- 10 years.  She died in Govan, Glasgow City age 66 in 1876 (birth year ie 1810).  Assuming John could have died in the same area, I also did a search which  showed 3 deaths for a John Reid, with one in 1880 in Govan where the John Reid was born in 1812.

If this is the right John you would confirm his parents from his death cert. info. Also it would show the name of his wife as further confirmation. Flora Shaw/Reid's death cert., if the correct one, would obviously tell you who her parents were.

Regards.

Monica
