Ireland / Re: Rathdown registration district

I understand what you are saying but when I search the FindMyPast Ireland site and put in a general search for Byrne – birth Rathdown 1880 +/- 2 years all the 5000+ results come up as Rathdown – Dublin not a single one that I can see comes up Rathdown – Wicklow, even though three sub-districts of Rathdown are solely in Co Wicklow and even changing the family name to something entirely random the results still come up Rathdown – Dublin. If I search for the Byrne family name in Rathdrum the results come up as Rathdrum - Wicklow so it is probably an anomaly or something with the way the site is set up but it still makes me wonder if there could be a crossover

Thank you for that link, when I matched the information with other links it seems to confirm that there are three sub-districts of the Rathdown registration district solely in Co Wicklow and to date I have been unable to find any GRO records for Rathdown Co Wicklow they all seem to be Rathdown Co Dublin which leads me to believe that someone could be born in one of these Co Wicklow districts and still be registered in Rathdown Co Dublin, or I could still be way off the mark.

Wicklow / Re: Grananbeg / Granabeg

Thank you for that gaffy, just now I cannot see a link as the father of my John Byrne was (not surprisingly) called John as well which I suppose could well mean that John the son was the first born of the family. I was curious about Granabeg because I really couldn’t see from the maps where a carpenter and servant would be working in the area and wondered if there was a big house in the district that employed that kind of staff, I have had a similar situation up in Co Mayo where a large house belonging to the landowner / land occupier had been pulled down during the 1870s but the ruins were still marked on the 1900 OS map of the area and the area named on GRO certificates.

Ireland / Rathdown registration district
« on: Friday 22 November 13 16:39 GMT (UK)  »
I have read that the Rathdown registration district overlaps between Co Dublin & Co Wicklow, so would anybody know if you were born in the Co Wicklow part of Rathdown district would the birth be registered in Co Wicklow or Co Dublin because all relevant records I have seen for Rathdown so far appear to be from Co Dublin
My reason for asking this question is that I am trying to source the birth record for my g-grandmother Bridget Byrne, I have record for her in the 1901 census as a 20-year old born in Co Wicklow and living with her parents and siblings at Albert Place in Kingstown Co Dublin. From this we were able to source baptism records through RootsIreland for all her siblings in the Kingstown & Rathdown registration districts and then a GRO copy of her parent’s (John Byrne & Ellen Ward) marriage in Rathdrum Co Wicklow on 8th May 1878 but so far for Bridget there is nothing.
I have sourced GRO copies of all six of the Bridget Byrne births in the Rathdrum district between 1878 & 1881 and then a couple of 1878 births in Rathdown district Co Dublin in case she was born in one district and registered in another but again nothing so far, probably I am missing something along the way so some fresh thoughts would be appreciated.

Wicklow / Grananbeg / Granabeg
« on: Friday 22 November 13 09:30 GMT (UK)  »
The parents of my g-grandmother (John Byrne & Ellen Ward) were according to the GRO record married in Rathdrum RC chapel on 8th May 1878 and they both gave their place of residence as Grananbeg. I have checked on the local maps and am assuming that this was a mis-spelling for Granabeg, although it does seem to be a fair distance away from Rathdrum town.

Having had a good look at the maps for the life of me I cannot seem to find anywhere in that area where a carpenter and a servant would actually be living let alone working, both of their fathers are recorded as labourers rather than farmers on the marriage record so is it possible I am looking at the wrong area or was there a hamlet or the like there during the 1870s that isn’t there now.

Thank you for the information gaffy you were absolutely spot-on with the location. Since my first posting we found on the landedestates.nuigalway.ie website information about a house built during the 1700s called “Saint Audries” in the same location that you have indicated and according to these records was in ruins by the time of the first ordnance survey, so it is pretty evident from the map that the area was named after the house or estate, and even better for my research it falls perfectly into the area that my paternal family appear to originate from.
On your second post you are pretty well spot on as well, the Bridget Cleary (born 1883) we were researching and who was my great aunt is the daughter of Bridget Higgins and Thomas Cleary and went on to marry Anthony Broderick in 1904, so with your assistance everything there appears to have fallen into place.
Thank you once again - GedB

Ireland / Saint Audris

Does anybody know where Saint Audris is in Ireland, my great aunt Bridget Cleary was born at Derrinlevan Co Mayo in 1883, her parents were married in Castlebar in 1881, her father coming from Mount Daisy and her mother from Saint Audris, I am assuming it is somewhere nearby but it is not coming up on any reference material.

Thank you for that Elwyn it looks to be a very detailed and interesting site, must admit though that it made the hairs on the back of my neck bristle when I first looked at it because the family name of the founder appears to the same name as I am researching.
