Devon / Coysh family of Highweek
« on: Thursday 26 November 20 13:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I am trying to find the parents and birth of George Coysh. His obituary gave his DOB as 18/9/1781. He was a soldier and was a prisoner of war in France as a teenager and then came to live in Topsham and was the school master. He also wrote a book about Spelling and he died in 1840.
I have a hunch that his father was Robert Coysh from Highweek and his mother was Dorothy/Dorothea Squires. This is just a hunch, the dates sort of match (there is a baptism for this George Coysh in Oct 1782) and George called his first son Robert and his daughter Sarah Dorothea. This of course is all circumstantial and I am flailing around looking for proof as opposed to just wanting it to be right!
Please does anyone have any local knowledge that can help me with this.
Thanks

Glamorganshire / George Richard Matthews alias Joseph Marsh 1837-1895
« on: Thursday 10 September 20 11:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Today I received a death certificate for George Richard Matthews, a Devon man who married in Topsham in 1861, was in the army as a gunner in 1871 and then disappeared. His wife found a new partner and married him bigamously in 1882 but in 1895 she must have got news of his death and she and her husband married for a second time legally soon afterwards.
I can't find out what happened to George who also used his second name and was listed as Richard Matthews but on the death certificate it says 'George Richard Matthews otherwise Joseph Marsh'. He died on the 15th of September in an accident at a quarry in Bridgend while working as a railway labourer and there was an inquest. The inquest was in Ogmore but I can't make out the name of the quarry and can't find him or the inquest in Glamorgan at all apart from his death. Please can anyone help.Thank you

Lancashire / 43 Great Mersey Street Liverpool
« on: Tuesday 08 September 20 15:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi I am trying to find out who was living at 43 Great Mersey Street, Kirkdale, Liverpool in the 1891 census, without a name I am not sure how to do this. In 1889 this was the address given at the baptism of a 13 year old boy called Thomas Leonard Matthews. Thomas was born in St Austell, his mother lived in Plymouth with her new partner and his father lived in Wales! I can find no reason why Thomas was baptised in Liverpool especially because it appears that both of his biological parents were there despite separating a long time earlier and having new partners and children.
My hope is that if I can find out who was at this address then I can work out what was happening.
Any help would be great
Thanks

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Sarah Broom in Albert Road Southampton
« on: Tuesday 08 September 20 10:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I am researching the Broom family from Topsham in Devon. on the 26th February 1860 a single woman called Jane Broom had a baby girl called Sarah in Southampton at 4 Albert Road.
I can find no reason why she would have been there. Jane married the next year and her husband was working on the railways so would have moved around the country but the baby didn't get him name later which happened a lot in her family. It is an amazing family of illegitimate births and multiple marriages to the same men so i am struggling a bit with it.
I am hoping that someone will recognise the address and it will be something significant like a hospital or a workhouse which might help to explain the mystery. Other single mum's in her family stayed at home with the babies so i don't think it was shame or being sent away.
Thanks

Buckinghamshire / Simpsons of Langley Marish
« on: Sunday 30 August 20 14:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi. The family that I am researching have just taken me to Langley Marish in Eton, Bucks. This is a whole new part of the country for me and I am having some problems working my way round it. I am looking for the family of Thomas and Mary Simpson and the only reason I know that they lived here is from a burial record because their grave is with family in Acton and their sons lived on the Strand in London. Mary died in 1823 and Thomas died in 1837.
This is before the 1841 census so I am a bit out of my depth and am hoping that someone with local knowledge can advise me where to look for records in the county.
Any help would be great, I am floundering a bit!
Thanks

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Ian Anthony Roger Wolfe Artist/printmaker
« on: Friday 24 January 20 13:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi.
I am trying to find out about a couple of artists, Ian Anthony Roger Wolfe and Anita Wolfe.

They were born in the early 1940s and in the 60s were living in Topsham, Devon. Ian illustrated a book of Topsham Scenes with block printing and the blocks and the booklet by Gerald Gill are in the museum but we don't know anything else about them.
Ian died in 1982 in East Wellow, Romsey but that is all I know. I am researching White Street in Topsham where they were living and I would love to know more about them and their work.
If anyone has come across them please can you tell me so that I can pass the information on to the museum.
Thank you

London and Middlesex / Charles and Henry Cooper
« on: Tuesday 14 January 20 14:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I think that I may be missing something obvious and I would really appreciates a fresh look at it.

Henry b.1810 and Charles Cooper b.1814 in St Martins in the Fields owned a house at 26 Great Russell Street, the electoral register puts them as joint owners from at least 1851 to 1859.

They were brothers in law of the business man Thomas Bartlett Simpson who ran the Cremorne Pleasure Gardens amongst many other taverns and enterprises and at different points the brothers seemed to swap alcohol licenses with Thomas for the Cremorne Stadium, the Albion, The Garrick's Head and the Adelaide. Their sister Maria died in 1831 and Thomas B Simpson went on to marry again but stayed in business with the brothers.

My problem is that despite having an address and numerous references to them in newspaper articles and electoral registers I can't pinpoint them on any census to get an idea of their families and hopefully of death records. It's such a common surname but I have enough information to make it possible.

Their father was called John and it is possible that their mother was Sophia but those dates don't match very well.

If anyone can see what I am missing I would be thrilled since i am going round in circles.

Thanks

London and Middlesex / St Johns Church Chelsea
« on: Friday 03 January 20 14:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I am researching Thomas Bartlett Simpson who owned and ran the Cremorne Pleasure Gardens in Chelsea amongst a lot of other stuff. At the funeral of his daughter Lady Lydia Butcher in Hampshire  in 1937 the obituary said that TBS had built and endowed the living of St John's Church Chelsea. The vicar of this church was the Rev WB Chalmers at this time but I can't find out anything about the church. When I google the church I get a modern version so perhaps the original is gone now but I would love to know more if anyone has any information.
Thanks

London and Middlesex / What was 'Fairfax Court' in St Martin in the Fields in 1826?
« on: Thursday 29 August 19 14:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I have finally found the baptism of Thomas Simpson b.1826 Westminster and it gives his address as Fairfax Court. I can't locate anything about this address and wondered if anyone else had come across it.

I am assuming it was a lowly address because if it was a decent building then there would probably be remaining evidence of it.

Thanks
Alison
