Devon / White Street Topsham
« on: Friday 05 July 19 14:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I am trying to find out that age of the houses in White Street in Topsham. I have looked at old maps but they just tell me that the house was there in the 1890s which I had assumed to be the case.
I have heard stories of it being the red light district of the harbour but not of any dates.
Amy advice on where to look for records would be great.
Thanks

London and Middlesex / 26 Great Russell Street
« on: Tuesday 04 June 19 15:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi. In 1851 Thomas Bartlett Simpson and his family were living at 26 GreatRussell Street. It was the address of a hotel and tavern and there were 14 servants living there with the family. Thomas made his fortune with the Cremona Pleasure Gardens and so I am assuming that this must have been a large hotel but I can't find the name of it anywhere.
If anyone knows where I can find this information I would be very grateful.
Thanks

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Thomas Meek Kirby in Middlesborough
« on: Friday 03 May 19 09:56 BST (UK)  »
Thomas Meek Kirby (1840-1890) is a mystery to me between the years of 1861 and 1890 but I have finally found a clue. He died in 1890 and the probate record said that he was 'from Middlesborough'. He was born in the village of Sowerby near Thirsk and died there 50 years later where he is buried in the local church with the rest of his family. I know where he was until the 1861 census when he was lodging in Scarborough working as a joiner but nothing after that. His brother emigrated to America and so I checked to see if he was there but no luck.
I have trawled through every record I can find on line to see if I can locate him with no luck.

If anyone has any ideas of where to look in Middlesborough between 1861 to 1890 I would appreciate and help.
Thanks

London and Middlesex / St Mary Magdalen Church Bermondsey burials
« on: Wednesday 27 March 19 12:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I have finally found the grave of an ancestor who i have been chasing for a while now. It is Willy (William) Meek who died of fever and was buried on the 24th of January 1821 aged 44. He was an affluent businessman who had lived at Spa Road in Surrey and his wife outlived him by over 50 years and was buried in Brompton cemetery.
I have tried locating a list of monumental inscriptions for St Mary Magdalen but the website for the church redirects me to  www.imagesofengland.org.uk and that site is down with no details of when it will be working again.
Please can anyone tell me of any other places to locate details about his grave, I am so close ...
Thanks

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Olive Godwin Sweet Shop
« on: Thursday 13 December 18 11:32 GMT (UK)  »
HI

A number of years ago when I started researching my Godwin family I received help on this board to locate Olive Godwin's shop. I had seen a picture of her standing in front of it but that was all I knew. A  member here found it at 18 South Front, Southampton in Kelly's Directory 1927 which was brilliant.
I have tried to find an image of this page and any information to see how long she had the shop for but with no success, the image must exist for the person to have sent me the information but I have no idea how to track it down. Any help would be great.
Thanks

Bedfordshire / Police in Westbourne, Queen's Park in 1900?
« on: Monday 12 November 18 12:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi.
I have been trying to find out why my ancestor Olive Legg was born in Bedfordshire when her whole family lived all their lives in Dorset and Hampshire. I have now found out that there is also a Westbourne in Queens Park, Bedford! I have a document that says that Olive's father joined the police in 1900 in Westbourne which I have been assuming was in Dorset. Olive was born a few months after he joined and her POB was Queen's Park Bedford.
I now think that he joined the force in Bedfordshire (although I don't know why) and that I have muddled my Westbournes. By 1901 he was back in Hampshire so I now need to find out if there was a police training place or anything similar in Queen's Park. Any help or advice would be great.
Thanks

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Godwin burials in Woolston?
« on: Tuesday 30 October 18 18:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I am finding it difficult to work out where two of my ancestors were buried and i wondered if anyone local could suggest a possible church or graveyard.
Melinda Godwin nee Green died on the 4th of Feb 1925 at her home Ordnance House, Milton Road, Woolston. She and her husband William had lived there for a long time. I assume that she would have been buried close by but i am having no luck with my search. William died three years later on the 18th of December 1928 in Bitterne where he lived with his mother after he was widowed. I sent off for both death certificates to see if there were any clues but they haven't helped.
Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Somerset / James Green, Coal miner of Lawyer?
« on: Tuesday 25 September 18 17:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi. My ancestor James Green 1837-1886 was born in Camerton, baptised in Midsomer Norton and then lived at Carlingcott, Camerton for the rest of his life. His father Elijah was a blacksmith and James was a coal miner in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census returns.
However in 1881 he was a lawyer and I assumed that I had got him muddled with another James Green or the transcription should have said Labourer but it is accurate. In 1912 his daughter got married and he was 'James Green lawyer deceased' on the marriage certificate.
Am I missing something here, how could he have been a lawyer of was it a courtesy name for someone who helps people with paperwork?
Any help with this would be great, I keep checking and rechecking everything to see if I've made a mistake and it's driving me mad!
Thanks
Alison
