Yorkshire (West Riding) / William and Lucy Wilcock of North Bierley
« on: Monday 07 March 22 13:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I am looking into the family of an architect called William Wilcock 1931-1920 and his wife Lucy Booth 1834-1913
They lived in the same area for all of their married life from 1872. Addresses included Moorhead Villas in Ivy Road, Norwood Street and 9 Leeds Road.
I am reasonably sure that Lucy died in North Bierley in 1913 and William in 1920 but I can''t find any gravestones or wills for either of them. I have sent off for death certificates but need the information before they arrive with me so if anyone can shed any light on where I would find details about their deaths and burials I would really appreicate it.
Thanks

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Leslie Camp of Ossemsley, New Milton
« on: Wednesday 02 March 22 10:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi.I am trying to find out about a man called Leslie George Camp whose last know address was Holly Patch, Green Lane, Ossemsley, New Milton.
George was born in 1920ish in Devon so I am reasonably sure that he will not still be alive but equally it is recent history so I don't want to poke my nose in where it's not wanted with any possible family.
I am not researching Leslie himself but an artist who lived in Topsham in Devon, her name was Lucia Dudley Carro 1876-1962 and she left all her money and possessions to Leslie. Lucia's will gave two addresses for Leslie, the one in Ossemsley and one in Exeter. After her death her solicitors put an advert in the papers to try and find Leslie but there is no information about whether they did or not.
Lucia was unmarried with no children when she died in 1962 and I am writing up her life story so would love to know how Leslie was connected to her. The dream would be to find some of her artwork to add to the story and I have this (probably) vain hope that she may have left some images with her will that I could see one day.
Any help would be great
Thank you

Devon / Stone in Bideford?
« on: Sunday 13 February 22 10:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I am researching an artist called Louisa Thomasine Smith who lived in Topsham, Devon. She was born in 'Stone' Bideford in 1876 and her father, Thomas William Smith was a retired perfumer from London. I have Googled Stone but it just comes up with Stone Farm and that doesn't seem right for a perfumer. Please can anyone tell me anything about Stone, anything at all.
Thank you

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Southampton Industrial School Ship
« on: Friday 28 January 22 18:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I am trying to find out more about the Southampton Industrial School Ship. I am looking at a boy who was born in 1888 and was on the ship in 1901.

I know that Industrial schools on land tended to be for 'troubled' or orphaned children, was this the case for the Southampton? Please can anyone tell me where I could find records for the ship.
Many thanks

Warwickshire / Kate Wilson Oliver 1876-1921
« on: Friday 03 September 21 11:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I am trying to find out about Kate Wilson Oliver who died in Wheeleys Road Edgbaston in 1921 aged 45. She was born Kate Wilson Cuthbert and married John Elwell in 1901 in Wolverhampton and following his death she married a widower called Ernest Francis Oliver in 1915 also in Warwickshire.
The couple moved to a grand house in Topsham, Devon in abt 1919 where Ernest was buried on his death in 1923 (he had been a draper but had become a congregational minister). Kate died in Wheeleys Road, Edgbaston and isn't buried with Ernst so i am trying to work out where her grave is. There is also a charitable foundation called the Kate Wilson Oliver Foundation for aiding impoverished gentle folk which is still going and sounds like it could be connected to her but again i am a bit stuck.
Any help with her burial and her life would be great, thanks

Devon / 5 Raleigh Villas, Exmouth
« on: Monday 30 August 21 10:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I have two references to 5 Raleigh Villas in Exmouth, one in 1922 and the other in 1929 for two different women.
In 1922 Mabel Newman Oliver was definitely at 5 Raleigh Villas according the the Gazette and in 1929 Winifred Phear a wealthy suffragette was in the papers as a visitor of licensed houses under the lunacy act(?) of '5 Raleigh Villas, Exmouth'
I can't find any trace this house or what street it was in anywhere and in 1929 Winifred was actually living in Withycombe Raleigh.
I think that these two women were connected, Mabel was a poor woman from Topsham who changed her name by deed poll in 1922 from Mabel Ellen Newman so she may have been a servant but I think that the connection was women's rights.
Any help to find this house and who was using it would be fantastic.
Thanks

Devon / John William Beasley Bould or Boull
« on: Saturday 06 March 21 18:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I am trying to track down the life of John William Beasley Bould/Boull before his marriage in 1869. All of his documents give his POB as Ottery St Mary in 1847 but there is no trace of him there. He used the name Bould to begin with and his father was John Bould, a farmer on the marriage certificate in 1869. For at least another another ten years John and his wife Jane nee Anstey had the surname Bould for themselves and their children but it started to become Boull in about 1881.
They were married and lived in Topsham for the rest of their lives and are buried in Topsham cemetery with the surname Boull.
From birth to 1869 John is invisible and it is driving me crazy.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
Thanks

Devon / Albert Edward Trout 1866-1890
« on: Saturday 27 February 21 16:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I am going round in circles, Albert Edward Trout was a sailor in the Navy and in 1890 he drowned in a notorious shipwreck aboard the HMS Serpent. He had only just got married and here is my problem. I know that he was married within weeks of his death because of newspaper articles but I can't work out who his wife was. In theory this is easy, Ancestry and FindMyPast say that he married either Eliza Lendon or Annie Maria Smith in Topsham in 1890 but I can't find out which. I have tried census returns, babies, future marriages etc with no success. Normally I just try to apply the surname to both of the women and search for them but I can't find either. Any help would be brilliant, I think I am missing something obvious.
Thanks

Devon / Red Cow Village Topsham
« on: Tuesday 05 January 21 11:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I am looking into the Back family in Topsham and in 1851 they were living in Red Cow Village. It is in the census for Topsham although it appears to be on the edge near Newport road but the only reference I can find is a Red Cow Village near the train station in Exeter.
Can anyone shine any light on this for me please because i am really confused. Another member of the family was born there in 1865 so they obviously stayed there for a while.
Thanks
Alison
