Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / 1841,51 census lookup request, Old Newton
« on: Friday 12 August 05 15:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for a family in Old Newton on the 41 and 51 censuses.  They are John and Mary Potter and possibly their younger children.

John was born in Old Newton in 1783 and died in 1860.  Mary was born in Occold, possibly in 1780 and died in 1865.  They had 12 children, but the older ones would probably have left home.  The youngest one was Harriet, born in 1826.

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks,
Diane

Shropshire Lookup Requests / 1851 census lookup request: William Jones
« on: Saturday 06 August 05 17:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Is there a kind person out there who could do a look up in the 1851 census for me.

The snag is it is a very common name and I know nothing about his early life or parents.

It is William Jones, who would be aged about 17.  He was born in Dawley, and I would think probably still there at that age.  He later married and was in Walsall in 1861.  He was later described as a blacksmith and an engine smith.

I appreciate there may be several William Jones's.  On the subsequent censuses he was aged, 27,37 and 47 respectively, so I'm sure he was born around 1834.

Thank you if you can search for me  :-* :-*

England / Names on certificates: Late/formerly
« on: Wednesday 06 July 05 16:47 BST (UK)  »
I have a birth certificate which names the mother as Ann Jones, late Smith, formerly Owen.

Do I take it that she was born Owen and first marriage was to a Smith, or is it the other way round?  :-\

Anyone able to enlighten me?

Thanks,
Diane

Hi,

Is there anyone who would be able to look up the following family in Hull for me:

Thomas Milligan and wife Bridget (b abt 1820) and daughter Catherine (b 1845).  I know nothing about Thomas apart from him being a mariner.  In 1845 they were living in North Street, Hull.  I have Bridget and Catherine in 1861 in Ripon.  By then Bridget was a widow and working as a travelling hawker.  Her place of birth was Ireland.  I don't know if Thomas had died before 1851, but I hope not because I want to find out where he came from and if he was Irish too.

Thank you so much if you can help.  :)

Ireland / Bridget Mannix - how do I begin?
« on: Tuesday 05 July 05 16:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've  just found out an ancestor was from Ireland.  All the others have been from England, and this has stumped me.  I don't have a clue where to start looking as all it says on the census is 'Ireland'.

On her daughter's birth certificate it gave her name as Bridget Milligan, formerly Mamix.  After getting nowhere with Mamix, I've come to the conclusion that it may have been a transcription error ( the b cert was a typed copy from Hull cc, not a scan of the original), and her surname was Mannix as that seems fairly common in Ireland.

I only have her on the 61 census with her daughter in Ripon, as a lodger, job a travelling hawker.  She was widowed and gave her age as 40.  I haven't found the 51 census yet.  She was living in Hull when her daughter was born, and husband Thomas Milligan was a mariner.  I haven't found a marriage for them, but I guess they may have married in Ireland.  Thomas may have been Irish too.

I have no idea where I begin to look for her birth/baptism in Ireland.  Where do I go from here?

Any help gratefully received,
Diane

Suffolk / Wetherden/Wyverstone query
« on: Sunday 03 July 05 15:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I don't know Suffolk at all, and wondered if someone who knew the area can help.

On the 1851 census of Old Newton John Clamp's wife, Hannah (nee Rice) gives her place of birth as Wyverstone.  (I have not actually seen this, but have been given a transcription from a cousin).

I have been trying to find the birth of Hannah Rice on the IGI and there is one which matches the year in Wetherden.  On the map Old Newton, Wetherden and Wyverstone are all fairly close to one another, although Wetherden is closer to O.N.  Is it possible that Wyverstone parish would come under Wetherden?

If not, back to the drawing board.   :(

Grateful for any ideas,
Diane

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / 1861 and 71 census lookup please
« on: Sunday 03 July 05 14:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

If anyone has access to the 61 and 71 censuses could they possibly look up the following for me please?

John Clamp (would be about 70 in 61) of Old Newton.

I have him and his wife Hannah in 41 and 51, and their son and family who moved to Bucks in the later censuses, but I want to tie up a few loose ends with John and his wife.  A Hannah Clamp died in 1857, and a John Clamp married a Margery Miles in 1859.  I want to know if this is my John Clamp.  I don't think he died until 1877 so he should be around on the 71 census too.  He was born in Fersfield, Norfolk.

Thank you very much.

The Common Room / My exciting find
« on: Friday 01 July 05 18:58 BST (UK)  »
Can I just share with someone my exciting discovery!   :D

I have hit so many brick walls just lately in my research that I wasn't sure what to do next.  So I decided to forget the far off ancestors and find out more about my husband's grandfather.  Just out of interest I decided to see if the church where he married was still there so did a search on the internet.

Isaac William Sambrook met and married his wife in Banff, Canada in 1912, although they were both British.  He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force during WW1, and worked for a time at Brett Hospital.  After the war they returned to England.

After finding the church I idly searched for Brett Hospital, and what came up was a photo circa 1912 and the photographer was credited as I. W. Sambrook !!

The photo was from a collection at Glenbow Museum in Calgary, and when I went on to that site I found 112 photos by Isaac William, including a couple of himself in uniform!!  ;D

What a find.  We didn't even know he had been a photographer, and had only got a grainy photo of him before.

I'm so excited, and just had to share it with people who would understand my excitement.  (My friends just said "Oh")!!

Hi,

Is there anyone who is able to look up a family on the 1841 and 1851 census for me please?  They are:
