Poor Grandpa looks like someone has used this pic of him and his mother in an origami class...

I'd really appreciate if anyone could work a miracle with this one? or is it just a bit too much?

« on: Friday 11 January 08 18:10 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone fancy having a go at this pic of my gt grandmother (sitting on the milkcart)?  As you can probably tell it's from a newspaper clipping so not the best quality ever.

Thanks in advance :)

Scotland / Emigration
« on: Wednesday 21 November 07 07:57 GMT (UK)  »
My 3xgt grandmother's brother emigrated to Australia c1852 from Scotland, I have him on the 1851 census then he vanished but luckily I "met" his gtgt grandson on GR and found out where he went to.

His next child was bn 1853 in australia but despite being able to narrow the date down neither of us has been able to pin down his exact date of leaving Scotland or his date of arrival in Australia.

Does anyone know where I could find this info?

thanks

Scotland / Qestion about marriage certs
« on: Thursday 18 October 07 19:53 BST (UK)  »
As we all know marraige certificates (at least in Scotland) gice the parents names of both bride and groom and also whether deceased or not .........my question is .... if a parent is deceased do these certificates ALWAYS record that?

The reason I ask is that I have the marriage certificate for my gtgt grandparents Margaret Wright and Robert Rae who wed 4/12/1868 in Jedburgh.  Robert's parents as given as William Rae (Lawyers Clerk?) and Margaret Rae MS Laurie...

Now I have searched the death records and the ONLY possible match (that I can see) to William Rae is a man who died in 1857 ? unfortunately the death certificate doesn't give hs wife's name just that he was married.

But surely if he died in 1857, he woudl have been recorded as deceased on his son's marriage cert 10 years later? or would he?

Roxburghshire / Gtgtgtgt Grandpa a Smuggler !
« on: Saturday 21 July 07 19:37 BST (UK)  »
I've just found out that my 4x gt grandfather William Balmer was also known as "Blind Wull Balmer" who along with Wull Faa II (the Gypsy King) was a notorious smuggler lol.

He was listed on his daughter's death certificate as a travelling musician and on his son's death certificate as a Fiddler ...in more ways than one it appears.  Given the gypsy connection and the fact he was a travelling musician, is it a fair assumption that he was probably a gypsy himself?

And does anyone else have a connection to or any knowledge about William?

England / Can anyone help with 1912 birth?
« on: Thursday 05 July 07 20:51 BST (UK)  »
I have a massive brickwall here.

My grandfather was born 5/4/1912 in we THINK Halesowen or the Birmingham area.  His name was Alfred James Ward and his parents were Emily Phillips and either James Alfred or Alfred James Ward.

We cannot find either a record of his birth OR a marriage for his parents anywhere !!!

Is it possible that his birth was not registered?

Lanarkshire / Janet Bogle
« on: Friday 22 June 07 10:14 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me track down Janet Bogle born July 1857 in Biggar?   She is the illegitimate daughter of my 3 x gt grandmother Janet Bogle or Wilson.  I've found her on the 1861 census living with her mother but then she vanishes ..... and I can't find a death for her either.

Come to think of it .... I haven't got the 1871, 1881 or 1891 census records for her mother either.  Is it possible that they were left out of the census?  and why can't I find a death ?

« on: Saturday 16 June 07 20:07 BST (UK)  »
Well I wasn't going to pester you all with a lot of photographs but I am so impressed with your treatment of gtgt granny I woudl love someone to have ago at this one of my mum and her late sister.  As you see there is a nasty fold across the pic which has resulted in poor Mum's mouth being destroyed.

I also have a pic of my neice who is my mum's double if that would help with the shape of the mouth?

Thankies :)
