Refers specifically to the Perrin family who owned a plantation. Interesting (and disturbing) stuff.

Only relevant I think if you are a US citizen and have what Judy Russell (see link) so accurately calls unhonored dead. Deadline for responses is 1st December.

The Common Room / Would welcome help in the BMD indexes
« on: Sunday 26 October 14 10:55 GMT (UK)  »
Mostly I have found the family announcements in the papers really helpful, often pointing me to the records that I'd otherwise failed to find. But in trying to sort out one family, there seems to be not one brick wall, but a positive fortress, reinforced by contradiction! If anyone can link any of these to any records at all, I'd be endlessly grateful. Thank you to all - as always on RootsChat.

Judy Russell raises some interesting points in her blog:

The rest of her blog is also fascinating and very thoroughly researched....

Family Bibles / Restorer advice for large Bible
« on: Sunday 31 August 14 23:42 BST (UK)  »
I have an elderly (1840s) Bible - it's large, weighing several kilograms, and I would guess that it always was intended as a family bible to record births, marriages and deaths; there's no sign that it's been used for Bible study. The binding has broken and I fancy having it restored. Has anyone on RC experience of this and able to give recommendations and costs - I'm based in Berkshire? Thank you all

Graham

Census and Resource Discussion / Results of Census 2021 Consultation
« on: Friday 28 March 14 13:48 GMT (UK)  »
This has just arrived by email; I imagine some others on RootsChat will have received the same.

Dear Respondent

I thought that you would be interested to know that the National Statistician, Jil Matheson, made her recommendation yesterday on the way forward for census and population statistics.

In summary the recommendation is:

·        An online census of all households and communal establishments in England and Wales in 2021 as a modern successor to the traditional, paper-based decennial census. ONS recognises that special care would need to be taken to support those who are unable to complete the census online.

This would be combined with:

·        Increased use of administrative data and surveys in order to enhance the statistics from the 2021 Census and improve annual statistics between censuses.

·        Together these would make the best use of all available data to provide the population statistics which England and Wales require and offer a springboard to the greater use of administrative data and annual surveys in the future.

·        Further research is to be carried out over the coming months and years to determine the most appropriate blend of methods and data sources.

You can find the National Statistician’s recommendation here [ www.ons.gov.uk/ons/about-ons/who-ons-are/programmes-and-projects/beyond-2011/beyond-2011-report-on-autumn-2013-consultation--and-recommendations/national-statisticians-recommendation.pdf ]
and the response from the Sir Andrew Dilnot, Chair of the UK Statistics Authority here [

The Government will respond in due course.

Discussion with users has played a key role in informing our view of the best way forward. It strongly underlined the value to users of existing census data about small areas, about small populations and as part of the historical record. It also showed that users recognise the potential value of modernising our approach and making use of other sources. We feel the resulting recommendation of a mixed approach provides the best possible solution and a very positive base for the future. Our summary report of the consultation is also published today.

We look forward to continuing to work with you as we refine the approach over coming months and years.

Please contact us at beyond2011 *at ons.gov.uk if you have any questions or wish to discuss further.

Kind regards

The Lighter Side / Neglected Heaks
« on: Wednesday 05 February 14 19:50 GMT (UK)  »
I was searching through Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, registers today and I came across this burial:

11th February 1627/8. Buried: Neglected Heaks, daughter of Jeffery.
And shee was so named because shee had no godfather or godmother prepared at the time of baptising.

Now that's a name to carry round with you!

Armed Forces / English Civil War Dead
« on: Saturday 01 February 14 22:55 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping someone with some specialist knowledge can help here. Family legend says that my 9-g-grandfather was killed at the Battle of Chalgrove during the English Civil War, 1643. Now I'm aware that muster rolls and the like have disappeared and that BMD registration fell apart during the War and into the Commonwealth period - which really doesn't help much. It's fair to guess that they had more things to think about than whether people would like to see the documents 370 years later, I suppose.

My question is this: what happened about burial after a battle? My ancestor was killed only about 20 miles from home: could the family have fetched the body for burial at home - that is, assuming they got to hear the bad news in time? Or was it a case of mass graves?

Any guidance welcome!
