Roxburghshire / Re: John Waugh & Euphemia Turnball (graveyard)
« on: Saturday 18 February 12 21:17 GMT (UK)  »
This is my family - John's brother William was my g-grandfather.
The graveyard is in Chesters near Hawick.
Robert Waugh 1774-1859 was a blacksmith in Chesters (the smiddy is still there though now a private house), m Elizabeth Hindmarsh. Issue
1. Elizabeth 1815-; m Adam Sinton
2. Catherine 1817-; m Thomas Robson, blacksmith in Cavers
3. Helen 1819-; m Robert Murray, farm steward at Dimpleknowe
4. William 1822-81, veterinary surgeon Hawick and Stirling; m (1) Catherine Rutherford, no issue; (2) Margaret Jaffray, issue Robert Jaffray Waugh 1876-1951 Procurator Fiscal
5. John 1824-1904, blacksmith; m Euphemia Turnbull; children Mary 1860-77, Robert 1861-92, as yet I don't think Robert married
6. Robert 1830-59, blacksmith with his father, again I don't think there was a marriage or children

Please message me for more....and also if you have more info. I still haven't found out how the Waughs got to Chesters nor where they came from; and I haven't traced Elizabeth Hindmarsh's origins either.

World War Two / Re: Query regarding army records
« on: Saturday 18 February 12 20:04 GMT (UK)  »
Recommendations for the MM 1939-90 are available online from the National Archives (irritating for me as "my" MM was awarded in WW1 and nothing survives at all!). http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/

You might find more info by reading the unit's War Diary which will be at the National Archives (again I was unlucky, no mention of the soldier concerned); there might alo be a unit history published somewhere. The Gazette entry will tell you his unit.

You might also find something in official reports sent in. I have found a recommendation for a decoration in the offical report of Operation Dynamo and then got side-tracked because the file included all the recommendations for medals and Mentions - and correspondence deciding who was to be awarded what and why....a fascinating read! Realistically for thisor for the War Diary  you'd need to visit Kew in person or get a researcher to do it for you.

Here is what there is in the divorce file:

Marriage by licence; 23 Feb 1897, St Mary Rotherhithe; witnesses Lavinia Rachel Lacey and George Austin, Rev C Tweddle officiated; Eben recorded as a bachelor, Master Mariner as is his father Eben Jacob Locke, Master Mariner; Mary as a spinster daughte of George Neil Simons, Master Mariner. Both Eben and Mary give their address as 59 Fawcett Road.

Petition filed 20th August 1890; decree nisi 3rd November 1890; absolute 9th June 1891.
Eben, of 39 New Cross Road, states the marriage details, they lived and cohabited at 59 Fawcett Road, Rotherhithe, in Liverppol, at 32 Billington Road, New Cross and elsewhere. On 1st May 1890 at 7 Lugard Road, Peckham, Mary committed adultery with Frank King.
Undefended.

Incidentally there is quite a bit of info to be ferreted out about him and his father - shipping lists and so on.

And he is definitely Eben, not Ebenezer: the name Ebenezer is struck out and Eben substituted in the court record.

Somerset / Re: John Scott GOULD, North Curry
« on: Wednesday 15 February 12 00:17 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you - Gentleman's Mag gives the marriage of John Scott Gould and Sophia Barrett at Taunton 14th Oct 1840.

Joshn Scott Gould's memorial in North Curry reads:  "He hath dispersed abroad and given to the poor" and the love of God and his Saviour governed all his actions which produced in him that kindness and gentleness of disposition with a humility of heart that made him beloved and respected by all who knew him.

But his dispersing to the poor left him plenty - Gentleman's Mag again: "He was a munificent benefactor to the Taunton and Somerset Hospital, as well as a liberal patron of various local charities in the neighbourhood: his immense wealth is estimated at nearly £500,000."

I have Sophia's Will and it really is a monster document: the marriage was childless so property is distributed all over.

So - just where did this immense wealth come from, I wonder? He had lands in Somerset, but how did the family get them? I'm wondering if this was from India - the Barretts had India connections and my family history suspicions are in action!

Just hoping thereis someone out there with some inside knowledge of the Gold family.....

Somerset / John Scott GOULD, North Curry
« on: Tuesday 14 February 12 22:22 GMT (UK)  »
Born about 1791, died 1846, lived Moredon House, North Curry. His wife Sarah Barrett survived him by many years and died 1871. They were very wealthy: I'm interested to know what his origin was and where the money came from! I believe that John Scott's father was John Gould of Ilminster, married to Sarah Scott.
My connection is with the Barretts - my g-grandfather was one of a flood of beneficiaries in Sophia's will: there were over 80 cash bequests and nine or ten pieces of real estate named as well.
Many thanks
Graham

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Re: Elizabeth Harriett Brydges Barrett
« on: Tuesday 14 February 12 15:11 GMT (UK)  »
Just to top up with  more info: I bumped into Henry when I saw he was in the probate index as executor for his sister Henrietta Casebow Barrett. It took me time to link him with the family: he was born 1863, his father died before the 1871 census when Henry was at boarding school in Bathwick near Bath; in 1881 he and Henrietta were enumerated together at home but their mother was away.
Henry's father was Thomas Barrett (1816-68), a doctor, Medical Register from 1859, address as 40 StJames's Sq., Bath; MRCS 1837, FRCS 1852, MD Aberdeen 1854, Apothecaries' Register 30 March1837. My elderly, possibly 19th-century, Barrett family tree gives his mother as "Miss Smith of Bath"; freebmd gives her Christian names as Anna Eliza. She was living in Alexandria Road, Clevedon, in  the 1871 Census as widow of physician with unmarried daughter Clara.
But I cannot find Henry Brydges Barrett or Elizabeth Harriette in the 1901 or 1911 census.....

Thank you for this guidance - I appreciate the data protection and privacy issues - but what I'm hoping for is contact with the family: the last, if rather remote, contact made was during the probate of the Will of Edith Rosecleer Barrett, the youngest of William Parish Barrett's 10 chilldren, in 1963-4; I have a copy of the family tree constructed by the solicitors at the time.
