The Common Room / Re: Marriage register - how big (for scanning)?

Not sure you'll be allowed to photograph whole pages?
My local registry doesn't allow that!
Privacy and GDPR concerns.
Marriages are public events so the names etc are public knowledge; I think that they've escaped the clutches of GDPR, although some record offices may think otherwise.

Chances are you'll only be able to access microfilm anyway... our archive office doesn't allow access to the originals.

There will be no UK passenger list: these were only made for voyages beyond Europe.  However there are German outbound passenger lists, though I don't know how comprehensive they were nor their survival rate.

If they were officers rather than ratings, you could trace their careers via the Navy Lists which are on the National Library of Scotland's website.

@GrahamSimons will see if I can reach out to them.

When do the records start? If we assume he was at least 18 in 1819, if he worked until he was 40-50 could he be on the register until 1840-1850 (or back then were you only registered once)?

Medical Register began in 1859. Some editions are in Ancestry.

You are too early for the Medical Register unfortunately.  As a long shot,  a very long shot, you could try contacting the Royal College of Surgeons.
Might be worth a newspaper search using Taylor AND Surgeon as the search term.
There might be something in the Kirk records.

Historic issues of the Kenya Gazette are in Google Books.
Searching for "Kenya Gazette" and Metherell generates a few results.
This one might be of interest.
